WSJ: Sony Plans New PlayStation for Graphics-Heavy Games

Already?

I know it's supposed to be a mid-thing like the DSi or the N3DS, but those devices never went beyond 200 Bucks.

Is the market really accept this concept with home consoles? :/

So according to this, they're going to sell the models alongside one another.

Interesting.

Makes sense. You can either get a PS4 for $299 (I see a price cut coming this fall in time for PSVR) or upgrade to the PS4K (for $450-500 is my guess). Both systems will play the same games, just the PS4K will run them better and VR will run better on it too.

Eh. I still expect a marginal bump. Still sticking to my assumption that it's a slim redesign that will replace the current model outright, and may at most absorb the extra VR shit into the console itself. Really can see them wanting to piss off the user base with something with even twice the processing power of the existing PS4.

I think they're trying to counter the NX. Maybe MS will do the same.

Now I kinda feel stupid buying 2 PS4 bundles (MGSV and Destiny) and a launch machine.

So what we're seieng here is the REAL cost of PSVR. A new Playstation + PSVR headset + camera + move.

Going Vive with my PC seems like a bargain now.

PlayStation 4 Pro.
Xbox One Pro.

I'll keep repeating myself until it happens. :)

Xbox Elite would be a better name since they already did an Elite controller.

PS4k makes most sense if Sony is going all in on the heavy grafix.

Whatever people have against churning out new models, if Sony does this right it's a smart business move. First adopter console enthusiasts have a lot of discretionary income they're willing to spend and they value that increased horsepower. 7 year console cycles are an antiquated notion if they can make the software catalogue forwards compatible.

It's not much different from the upgrade from the DS to the 3DS in my mind - I'm totally happy with this, and I don't think we'll suddenly get a total exodus of 'original PS4' games/developers just because there is a more powerful version available. The huge PS4 install base won't disappear overnight.

DS to 3DS was a generational leap that happened 7 years after the DS launched, it was a brand new system.

You would have had a point with DS to DSi or 3DS to n3DS

If it's just for VR and 4K, TV's I probably won't to buy it (unless there are other improvements like a better cooling system and faster storage).

But if every game can run better, then I need to upgrade

I'm very intrigued but my question is how much is this bad boy going to cost?? Shit Samsung just started selling their 4K blu ray player and that is $300. You're telling me Sony is making a box that can play games at 4K? This thing is going to be $999 isn't it?

This feels like it could singlehandedly kill PSVR and probably hurt future PS consoles a lot too. Announcing before PSVR launches seems like extra stupid timing so I'm still finding this hard to believe. Why would you basically tell people "hey might want to cancel those preorders and wait a while if you don't want shit to suck, losers!" while they still have ample time to just not buy PSVR at all.

Only last gen was that long. 5 years is barely any different from the 4 years it'd be if this thing launches next year

This move is so bizarre.

PS4 is in first place and is the most powerful console this gen. Who in the board room thought this wasn't enough for them?

"PS4 is selling at a break neck pace, nothing can stop it!"

"But it needs 4k"

"Ok, kill PS4 now and release PS4.5!"

well, as long as the old ps4 isn't missing any titles, I'd be okay with it I guess, also considering that near the end of PS3 life cycle, pretty much the majority of games ran sub 30fps on it. if the new PS4 can play late gen games with super solid framerates, I'd be down for it.

So their Interpretation based on the same rumors? This is as legit as every post in the two threads here.

This is the Wall Street Journal. They don't run stories like this without confirmation from multiple sources with knowledge of the situation at Sony.

I do think they are going to sell this for four figures as a premium experience.

Am I the only one who cares more about improved frame rates than whether or not it can run 4k games? The idea of something like Bloodborne or even Uncharted 4 running at 60fps is pretty exciting.

Of course they were. This PS4 slim nonsense never made sense with these rumors. Of course their will be a shrunk down PS4 but no it would not be more powerful as these rumors have been saying.

People dont want this to be true for whatever weird reason.

I am interested to see if the new PS4K has any benefits to someone with a non 4K screen. I would be interested in a PS4 upgrade, but do not want to replace my 1080p Plasma for the next couple of years.

What does this have to do with NX? This seems more like Sony recognizing they need a bit more power for VR and want to strike while they have momentum on their side.

I don't care about 4K (as if that thing could play 4K games, give me a break) but the PC performance of the Division coupled with my PS4 friendslist? Sounds great!

i have no problem with yearly or Playstation or Xbox consoles for 300 or 350$ as long as i can play my existing games Apple and Android style.

if anything, it makes purchasing my games more secure knowing i can play them on existing consoles. unlike right now i cant play even my 20 or so playstation 3 games unless i hook up that old slow console.

For those that can put some zenies aside now and trade in that ps4 or sell it and upgrade, im sure gamestop will offer a bonus when trading up. Also sony could do a PS4 + PSVR bundle for 599.99 and market that against the cost of getting into a rift or Vive. Hell even PS4 for 249.99 will be great.

To be fair these consoles are underpowered. I'm sure this move is in part because of VR and devs needing extra power. Let's be real we aren't going to have another 7-8 year console gen again. This is how you squeeze out a couple more years.

I remain highly skeptical, it doesn't make any sense based on how well Sony is doing with the PS4 right now, unless they think they can take the risk because of their overall lead.

Basically I'll believe it when I see it, but my gut says it's unlikely.

Article says announced this year. Releasing next year would make much more sense.

I think that would make zero sense. For this, I think announcement to release window has to be short as now you have people hesitating on buying a PS4. A September release wouldn't surprise me.

I problaly will, I have a gaming PC too, but I don't want to wait to play all these japanese games. Also, Horizon. If it's for VR and 4K video output, no thanks.

I expect this to be a) real and b) launch this year.

Look at this shit:
xg1QVbV.jpg

Too many cables, not sexy enough for your normal mainstream consumer. I fully expect them to drop the new console with PSVR in mind and launching it like a new console instead of an upgrade

They saw the NX and shat bricks.

All of this.

Seriously. If its being brought in to assist with the PSVR tech experience, you've JUST sold a shit tonne of PSVR preorders to people with base PS4s?

Yes they don't HAVE to buy it but fuck me that's pretty harsh.

No you are not. I'll take 1080p with high levels of detail and 60fps any day of the week over 4K 30fps.
