Final Fantasy XV needs to sell 10 million units to succeed in team's goal

After trying the demo, I will be definitely buying this game. It was not even on my radar until a few hours ago. But once I finished up the demo, that changed. I really enjoyed my time with it and my only problem with the demo is the shitty camera angle.

I think it's going to have more broad appeal than people are giving it credit. It's evident they want this to be their next FF7.

I thought FF7 RE was suppose to be their next FF7 :p

Kidding aside, I do agree that they want this game to be the new symbol of what they're known for. I hope the game performs well in the market. We've waited to long only to see it fail and shunned by Square like DMC 2 is by its devs.

This is looking bad for them all around.

Witcher 3 set the bar on open world games, and Bloodborne/Souls series set the bar for RPG combat.

If FFXV isn't a 90+ on metacritic with massive word of mouth its gonna be a miracle if they can push 5 million copies, much less 10.

FFXIII had the good name of FF behind it still + it wasn't a bad game (It is an 83 on metacritic, and personally I liked it alot minus the linearity and Snow/Hope) + it was the first "HD" FF

All this has going for it is the hopes of people who want the FF series to be great again, and that demo did it 0 favors.

I really don't understand how the Souls games have become a paragon of RPG combat. There is so much hubris from the Souls community about those games sometimes. The combat is rewarding because of its simplicity and the difficulty of the enemies - its not like the combat itself is mechanically deep. It just isn't.

Probably will wind up watching the CGI movie but not buying the game. I thought last night's reveal thing was awesome but I have no real drive to play the game, it just doesn't make sense to me but the movie looked awesome.

The franchise is damaged after the bad/mediocre games of the last generation and the excessive milking.

Even if the game ends up being undisputable "Game of the Generation" material, I doubt it would be as commercially successfull as they want to.
It already locked out the much of the female demographic by being a sausage fest roadtrip story.
Umm did you miss that pre show..

Well... I bought FFXIII and FXIII-2 and I can not, for the life of me, muster strength to care about FFXV. Men only cast, black only clothes, action RPG instead of turn based or instead of using ATB, some other questionable choices, everything I've seen so far after the initial trailer has made nothing but to hamper my excitement about this game. I'm sure they are trying to aim to a western market, but unsure if they will be able to please anyone western or eastern with it. Unless it turns out to be a stellar game that can produce the amount of hype FFVII produced back in its days (which seems most unlikely based on the impressions so far) it will fall short from that mark by more than a few millions units. I wonder at what price the 10 million units estimative has been set, though.

Witcher 3 is close to 10 million as per last update. Just sharing in case it hasn't been posted.

I doubt XV will get near that number, or be anywhere near as good as TW3.

Is there another action RPG with better gameplay or something?

The game is what it is because of the well crafted gameplay. No, it isnt DMC or Bayonetta in terms of complexity of controls but what it is does take a lot of craftsmanship to balance the challenge the way it does. They aren't just spamming you with difficult enemies, each encounter requires strategy, often unique ones.

Simple to me is Elder Scrolls.

Well, it wouldn't really be that hard considering how TW3 was a borefest.

I feel like the game will either live or die by it's world. TW3 has a really well crafted world and was really atmospheric with some really good characters populating it. I have yet to play a FF game with decent writing so that's not what I'm leaning on when I'm buying this. I'm buying it for the world we've seen because it looks pretty interesting to explore. Hopefully it really is.

When I read the title I was like '' yeah, they should get 10m easily!' With all the hype around it and how , after 10 years, people are finally getting the ff13 ''versus'' we all wanted''

Then I read the thread, and woah, almost nobody believes they will do it. Hmm...

I guess Final Fantasy just isn't as big as I thought =/

Seriously? No wonder modern gaming is fucked :( Lets at least hope they go out with a great game!

Good luck SE, you're going to need everyone who bought FF 13 and then some to reach that lofty, silly goal.

I bought and paid for FF 13 PS3 day one and it was a giant disappointment. I skipped both FF 13-2 and FF 13-3 for 2 main reasons; apathy and lack of quality in the brand. I've come to realize the main series is no longer my cup of tea. I did not like FF 12, and I did not play either FF 11/14.

Before I played the FF 15 demo, from everything I've read and heard I was indifferent to meh about the game. After playing the demo I am further turned off from SE's direction of their main cash cow and I will not be purchasing the game.

The hype the series once generated for me is long fucking gone. :)

Good luck. I'd say the game was lucky with getting half that over the life of the title. And if i'm being honest, i don't really think it'll perform to even that level.

This pretty much tells me you know nothing about this franchise. You could just look at the preshow they did before the Uncovered event, most of the fans that came to speak were females and it's pretty clear they are fine with the all-male cast. FF is one of the few huge franchise with a large female audience, because it's not just about random male protagonist killing dudes with guns.

It's obvious that they're not going to hit that without a PC version in the long run though so I'm banking on that within one year of console release.

Going by the assumption that the game gets positive reviews and good word of mouth, i think it will reach it.

Launch Day - 2 Mln
1st Year (Sept 16 - Aug 17) - 5 Mln
2nd Year (Sept 17 - Aug 18) - 7.5 Mln (1.5 PC, releases Sept 2017)
3rd Year (Sept 18 - Aug 2019) - 9 Mln (500K NX*, releases Fall 2018)
4th Year (Sept 19 - Aug 2020) - 10/10.5 Mln (1 Mln PS5/XB2**, releases 2020)

If it comes out and its very good, and i mean FFVII-level of legendary status. it will get it by 2.

*assuming NX releases Fall 16/Early 17, the PC port will take priority at least for a year
**assuming they release by Fall 2019

FF12 had a solid story and solid writing if you separate out the shoehorned meddling S/E brass forced in with Vaan that required re-writes to give us a boring main character that only takes away from the interesting characters and components of the original story. That and the apparent rushed final couple acts of the story.

The franchise is so big that Square managed to sell 7.5 million copies of FF XIII. They'll be fine.

^That was over 6 years ago...and XIII & XIV 1.0 didn't help the IP. Nor did the XIII sequels. Or even Type 0...

In an alternate timeline, Kingsglaive is an Ivalice film written by Yasumi Matsuno with a script by Alexander O. Smith.

But that would have to sell 30 million to make a profit!

But that was before FFXIII made lots of people unhappy. There was a big chunk of goodwill floating around.

I mean, did you see the sales drop after FFXIII? FFXIII-2? FFXIII-3?

Yeah, I don't see why people are bringing that up. Unless you're proving point that it won't get close to that.

Silly me, yeah FF12 had a decent story compared to the rest of the series.

The game would have to have very bad reviews to sell badly I believe. Final Fantasy XIII left a bad taste in a lot of player's mouth(including me) but please remember that its Final Fantasy we are talking about. Even their "bad" Final Fantasy still sold more than good games from other companies.

Some people may not like the games which is all good but I feel that the people who can't acknowledge their brand power and prestige are either too young to "have been there" at their beginning and prime or just blatant blind.

Its the division and starwars battlefront all over again, the games are incomparable but the thread sounds the same. Not reaching at least ffxiii would be bomba status and i just dont see that happening

I find what was shown of FFXV to be quite unappealing yet I think FFXV will most likely ship more than 5M units worldwide without any miracle.
Western retailers have demonstrated that can absorb that kind of quantity for blockbuster franchises (note I don't equate blockbuster with exceptionally good games) and Square Enix seems commited to push the game as hard as it can.
Of course I also expect FFXV prices to quickly fall down.

I would expect half of that, at most. Perhaps a bit more, given a few years. 10 million for this when only VII has managed that isn't even remotely realistic, even with a PC release and discounts down the line.
