The High-end VR Discussion Thread (HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Playstation VR)

The idea of getting two VIves so my wife and I could both play things together down the road has been briefly entertained but it's a bit too ridiculous for right now. Maybe I'll just keep the first gen Vive when the next one comes out.

Whats kind of neat is that the DK2 will probably still be useful for a while as a low end option. Many DK2 owners can repurpose their headsets for "player 2" hardware. Going forward, I could see OSVR being popular for that role, because it's a much cheaper headset than the high end ones.

Just a brain fart here...

When OR release the touch, will the second camera require its own USB port?

Because if you could get both on a USB switch, outside of the connector faff and lack of SDK (and OK, the latter is pretty big :)) is there any reason PSVR could also do 'proper' room scale?

If they wanted to fragment even further, then technically they could make it possible. PSVR single camera. PSVR dual camera. PS4KVR single camera. PS4KVR dual camera. You'd also have to deal with the long USB cable running back to the PS4, and the fact that the camera doesn't have the same wide FoV as the Rift cameras.

I think it would be better for them to just accept the limitations. They can redesign the whole kit for PSVR2 without having to rely on legacy camera tracking and provide more modern tracked controllers.

Edit:
Some really good objective information about the CV1 FOV drama:

The sacrifices we have to make with lenses. This will probably be the Achilles heel of VR for the foreseeable future. Unwanted image side effects vs unwanted weight and bulk.

The new first controller vs. second controller struggle.

"Tough luck Timmy. I'm the oldest, so I get the CV2."

That's really well researched!

Interesting that both the Rift CV1 and Vive reach their maximum FoV at some distance from the lens (and both at quite achievable distances in practice!).
I never have expected that, but then again I'm not an optical engineer :p

For the tl;dr crowd, the measured total binocular FoV at achievable distances from this article is:
  • 94° x 105° on Rift DK2
  • 94° x 93° on Rift CV1
  • 110° x 113° on the Vive

Ordered a Vive today, got an April date by squatting on the order page waiting for someone to cancel. It might still ship in May but I'm super hyped anyway.

Too bad Oculus failed with so many things, I was very excited about getting one but man, everyone's got a limit. Not including the eyeglass interface and this poor communication was the last straw for me.

How did you pull that off lol?

It seems like when someone cancels their order the slot is released for new customers, bug or intentional, I don't know. I've seen April come up three times today and then switch back to May after a while.

It carried on to the order confirmation email, so hopefully it sticks!

You need to press F5 and have a lot of patience.

Oh that's funny. I guess that bodes well for May preorders at least showing up early in the month. I actually put in a preorder that I may or may not keep for the Vive yesterday. My confirmation email doesn't have a month on it though.

Is PSVR considered high-end VR? As I've been watching Oculus coverage, one thing keeps coming to mind: If this is how janky some Oculus software looks, what's PSVR software going to look like? I'm assuming it's of lower quality, right?

I've also been able to cancel my May order and get an April "Part 1" shipment instead.

My card has now been charged (literally within 10 mins of the new order), and for some reason, shipping was about £50 cheaper.

If you have the patience to do some F5'ing, it's well worth it.

You guys are really tempting me with this. Ughhhh

It is (it's in the OP) but the software will be on the lower end (from a technical standpoint) compared to the other two due to the PS4. The headset by all accounts is almost on par though and the PS4K could in theory bring it closer in line.

Don't do this to me.

Most of the launch titles have been made by 'indie-ish' teams, who've had to spend most of their time working on the complexities of building an interesting VR title. The titles probably aren't greatly optimized, the engines/drivers they used for development had 'preliminary' VR support and quite a few of the Rift launch titles are gearVR ports. I think people have been running launch titles on cards way below supposed 'VR minimum' without major problems...

Basically most of the launch titles aren't really representative of '970-level VR'.

You'd want to look at Elite Dangerous or Valkyrie for some idea of what a 970 can produce in VR. For PSVR, here's Rigs which looks plenty good enough to me:

Not knocking gaming the system but it'd be annoying if that got you one earlier just because they charge straight away, when a ton of us got charge attempts in the middle of the night when we couldn't even contact the bank and now we don't know when they'll try again

It also seemed like I got charged right away, but it could also be a hold. I paid with a debit card.

The amount was over $1000 though, I thought the hold was just $1 or something.

How will you store your headsets?

Just put them on the desk?

First couple of months, I will wipe it down and place it gingerly back in the box and gently slide it under my desk.

About 3 months in, it will be tossed on top a pile of clothes in the corner of my room and one of the controllers will be in on top of the fridge for some reason.

It's tempted to try that, but I want to try the Rift out first and I doubt it'll be coming before the first Vives and I can only afford one of them, cant handle getting charged for both in a few days. Was gonna sell the Rift to help pay for the Vive in May if I still wanted to.

The only downside to getting the Vive early is that there aren't many games out yet:

+Ethan Carter VR

This is all I have so far. I'll probably end up getting Windlands and Albino Lullaby but that's all there is.

Any titles I may be missing?

I think that's about it. Most games won't unlock until the 5th as you've undoubtedly found.

Dang whatever I'll make the most of what I have. Ethan Carter and Windlands should keep me busy. I'm trying to find out if Minigolf is out yet since it's not listed as a preorder.

What page do I F5 in? Gonna try this out since I only ordered last week and probably wont lose much.

Just choose your country from the pre-order page and after that you should see the shipping month.

Refresh until it changes. Or...

I used this Chrome addon: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/auto-refresh-plus/ohfjpkccecpdfkpmfocndhepolhljfhg

Added a filter that when it loses the string "May 2016" it will play a sound alarm. Rushed in to order right after I heard it, lol.

There's always games that have received Vive support like Descent Underground, Elite Dangerous, and the cheaper ED: Arena.

Descent is still in development but the people seem to be having a good time. I can't speak to it or the state of its VR, however. ED Arena is marked as supporting the Vive and it's like $8 bucks.

Alright, so the Your Pre-order will start shipping May 2016 thing will change to April 2016 if there's a spot open?

I wonder what a good time is for F5ing. If I set it too long I could miss stuff but if I set it too short it could refresh again.

Is there a list of stuff anywhere that works with Vive that isn't from the Steam store? I know I am really looking forward to Vorpx support, but was looking for others.

There's a 'Virtual Reality' section under the games heading on the store front page. Select that and it shows you a list of all games tagged for either headset. Then just click the 'x' on the rift filter, and you'll see all Vive-compatible games.

Yup. I used 5 seconds but it will stop refreshing automatically if you put the filter in and it hits. But doesn't matter anyway, the April will stay there until someone has ordered it, got to be quick when the time comes.

I know I was just praying that I missed something,

I may have worded it wrong, I am looking for stuff not in steam. Crazy stuff that may not be allowed or still experimental.

No you didn't I just missed "isn't". Sorry about that.

Oh nice, I wasnt sure if the page monitor would keep refreshing after it hit. Alright, looks like I'll be glued to the computer for a while

Any idea if it reserves the spot once you start or do you have to be quick in entering all your info?

Doesn't have VR support. You're thinking of Big Cop where you're a giant who chases people down. Very similar in art style and mechanics tho.

Thanks a bunch!

Actually the dev of that has two other games coming to the Vive, Modbox and Maximum VR. I thought Maximum Override has VR support as well.
