Looking at recent sales figures, software aimed at core gamers and software that's appealing to everyone are one and the same. Besides, they're not mutually exclusive, are they? Nintendo can continue making stuff that "appeals to everyone" while also making calculated plays for the mainstream gaming audience.
As for the N64 and Gamecube, those platforms had way more problems than Nintendo's output (moreso the N64). I'd even say that the N64's core output is what kept the system from crashing down to GC numbers despite the entire Japanese industry jumping ship to PS at a time when the mindshare of Japanese software dominated everything else.

Eh, he just hasn´t heard about NX stuff for the briefing. Hasn´t heard that there will be no news. NOBODY actually knows other than Nintendo.

At least he didnt say no NX, he just says he doesnt know, Nintendo has been very locked down on NX they are not gonna let it leak, remember this isnt the big reveal its still for investors.

Metroid seems likely, given the interval since DKC Tropical Freeze came out, and Nintendo's willingness to discuss a more traditional Metroid at last year's E3.
It takes Monolith 5 years to make a game, so even if they were to make a sequel to X, it would be a couple years before we heard anything.
