"We hold our controllers in missing hands.
We stand tall on missing laptops.
We stride forward on the bones of our Vita’s.
Then, and only then, are we profitable.
This "revenue" is ours and no one else's: a secret turnaround strategy we wield, out of sight.
We will be stronger than ever, for our Ridge Racer."

I always thought after the hellish times Sony went through during the early PS3 days that it'd be impossible for Kaz to do much, but I'll be damned, CEOKazHirai redeemed.

I expected a larger profit to be honest, at least in the billions. They sure must have gigantic costs in the equation though.
I really don't see how anyone could reasonably expect anything higher, have you not been following Sony the past years? This is their biggest profit in a long ass time.

Shame their camera sensor business starts to show issues, and the earthquake has apparently damaged this Sony division the most.

iPhone sales have saturated a good amount as seen by Apple financials earlier this week.

Sensors were a real money maker too the last couple years hope it holds up.

I'll genuinely never forget almost the entire industry trying so hard in the months leading up to and after launch.

It was like the PS3 killed their dog or something.

Felt like a lot of people assumed that because the Wii U bombed, the entire industry would bomb.

Uncharted 4 slipping to next quarter probably hurt the profitability of gaming division this quarter a decent amount as it would had easily shipped at least 5 million units first week. Still as a whole great FY result and profits are just going to improve during the following year (a lot of first party releases, VR, Neo etc).

Great numbers and very impressive PSN numbers. Makes NEO make even more sense aside from the upgrades it brings. Sony is trying to get you locked into their exosystem. For good reason

The narrative around Sony during all of last gen was insane. They outsold 360 from launch, if you align the dates, and are around 90 million units moved. Nintendo hit 90m with one console in their entire history.

Despite the fact that the PS4 and Xbone are doing great, people will still freak out about the console industry being dead.

Well the Wii U, Xbox One, Vita, and 3DS have all fallen off a cliff. PlayStation is the one outlier in an industry full of flailing competitors.

The Xbone is doing poorly compared to the PS4, but isn't it still outpacing the 360? As for handhelds, the writing's been on the wall for years.

XB1 seems to be doing 'ok', even though its not as good as PS4. You don't count a console not selling like Wii as a failure.

Worst quarter For PS4 ever since launch. Though was expect. Last holidays PS4 was massive overshipped ( ~1.8 million gap sold-shipped ).

Next quarter gonna be way better, most likely up YOY again.

Also, i predicted 2.5 million. I was close.
Sony had BB last year while the Big hit this year was related to May.

That could explain "only" 2.3m.

Solid double-digit revenue growth from the Game & Network Services (G&NS) segment, which now is the largest operating unit overall for Sony (per Page F-6 of Earnings Release).

However, I find it interesting that Hardware sales actually declined slightly year-over-year, while Network segment was up 50%. Per Page F-8 in the same document:

Hardware is still obviously the largest portion of the G&NS unit, but I wouldn't have anticipated a decline with the strength of PS4. This must be due to the ongoing phase-out of PS3 plus continued lackluster Vita sales, no?

I'd say it's even doing good.

In the US and UK.

But we are talking WW sales, and the XB1 isn't doing too good overall (those 2 markets, maybe 3 with Mexico, being its lifeline particularly around the Holidays), and already starting to fall behind the 360.

I don't remember Microsoft releasing press statements about Xbox 360s monthly active users. It was just sales, sales, sales. Xbox 360 was a US and kinda sorta western Europe sales juggernaut. Xbox One is a distant second in those territories and like the X360 has no presence anywhere else in the world. Whispers in the halls of Redmond echo "disaster." It's a real mess like everyone in the console industry except Sony's PlayStation 4.

I think this month means a lot for X1. At $299 with a free game it has to move a lot of Units. If it doesn't that's certainly not a good sign.

Neither console is going to bell-curve like the Wii, either.

Edit: Unless everyone jumps on the Neo and the PS4 craters.

Who knows with that -shrug-. But if Sony keeps up the support, i doubt it would ever crater like the Wii U did once the grandma's put it back in their closet and the afternoon talk shows stopped showboating it

I'd say it's even doing good.

Well, XB was never good WW to begin with, no?

Disaster is a strong word. Sales seem fine, but PS4 is an absolute terror so, of course, their marketshare dropped considerably. Almost the entirety of the console market contraction is from Nintendo shitting the bed and collapsing entirety.

Sony had a lot of years where they weren't profitable at all, so anything in the black is an improvement. Kaz is doing a fantastic job of turning the company around.

With all due respect, it has taken Kaz a longer than expected time to turn things around at Sony.

Regardless, this is good news for the corp.

there is a reason the ps4k is being made. it will definitely sell more by replacing the ps3 at a higher price and increase revenue and numbers for next year as a result.

I don't believe Xbone out passing is true anymore after last quarter.

It was true at Dec quarter by a small margin... 360 right now is outpassing Xbone in every tracker we have data.

MS won't say it is ahead in PR anymore :p

Mr. Hirai had a very tough shitstorm to unravel when he took the helm. He could have refused, but instead he took the job and even made PlayStation something Sony took more seriously than before.

To me that spells M o r e G a m e s. That's exceptionally alright with me.

They sold 14.6 million at the price of US $400.. now they are selling 17.7 million at the price of US $ 350. So the increase probably have not covered the drop in sales of PS3 and Vita.

They did not sell all 17.7 million at $350.

PSN share should grow to over hardware levels, hopefully even by the next year, if not then 2018. They dont make anything on hardware so its sole purpose is to sell PSN services.

One of the mods here was hooked on that angle prior to the PS4/XO launch, always preaching long write-ups of doom and gloom for the industry in a lot of threads. It got to a point of predictability to where my eyes would just gloss past his post whenever I saw his avatar since it was the same thing over and over.

Funny how that dried up soon after launch.
