If you're serious, I completely respect this point of view. Not sure it makes sense to soap box on THIS game, and this game right NOW, but yeah, your post is understandable.

Honestly, tweet to the devs, voice your opinion and maybe you'll change some minds.

Not to be a negative Nancy, but gaming side GAF will get you nothing but "lol, it's a game! Lol buying ultimate hardcore edition"

In the meantime, don't let this kill you.
I guess I can respect it, but I really think it's an overreaction. Not because "lol it's a game" but because we have dozens of other games featuring more recent wars where just as many atrocities occurred, yet I've never heard anyone say boo about it. WWI is where we're going to draw the line? The one that happened nearly 100 years ago is the one we're going to complain about being "exploitative" and "in poor taste", not the one's featuring conflicts from the last 30 years?

I wonder if it was hard to convince EA to allow them to do WWI.
You remember the southpark episode when stan's uncle (jimbo) dresses up as a klan member and uses reverse psychology to get them to vote to changing the town flag? Its probably how they also convinced them to put a black guy on the cover.

I cant find the clip on youtube and now its bothering me.

Trailer already has more likes than the COD one.

I'm not surprised, you know. How exciting would another futuristic FPS have been? It's kind of played out by now. In my opinion they did right by turning the genre on its head by returning to their roots. I'm sure there's plenty of CoD, MoH and BF fans like me waiting on the side for the return of WW era FPS. I think this could play out very well for them, even considering the MW remake :)

"Hmmm...I don't know, DICE. Is WWI really a profitable setting appropriate topic for a video game?"
Picking up on that line of thought: Most focus groups will probably tell any publisher that WWI is not worth their time as the main target groups of FPS: gamers in the US, do not have any real connection to WWI and would therefore not be really interested in it. Also the difficulty of presenting a US-only centric narrative when the Americans were only actually involved in actual combat for slightly more than a year and were more like reinforcements for the French and to a lesser degree British forces making up the bulk of the Allied forces on the western front.

There is a reason why 90% of all WWII shooters are set on the western front and why you almost exclusively play Americans. Hell, even games like Sniper Elite III, where you actually play in the African setting, has you playing an American. In a conflict exclusively between Brits, Italians and Germans. I mean you can probably count the modern military shooter games not exclusively featuring GIs as only playable characters in single player with one hand as well.

I'm really glad that DICE is going for a multiple characters, multiple points of view approach, means that the timeframe won't be limited to 1917-1918, also means that you get all the other interesting theatres of the war outside the western front (the Italian/Alps front and the desert war being already confirmed) and that we'll finally get to play from the German/Austrian point of view, rather than having brave. heroic and good Americans blasting evil Nazis and saving the day yet again.

The way the two wars were fought.

Trench warfare is the single most brutal, disturbing, horrifying form of warfare ever created. And it was fought over nothing. No grand effort to drive back the fascists, no stalwart defense of the motherland, no liberating labor camps or cities from the yolk of oppression.

Just the worlds bloodiest family squabble over nothing. Quite literally nothing.

Honestly that's a very arbitary distinction, It's senseless slaughter none the same on a massive scale neither is worse than the other and you'd be insulting those that died in those wars to imply as such.

There has been such a fuss over a return to an earlier time period, so it's only natural.

The fact the game will have zero auto aim or lock on is wonderful. Not sure how trench warfare will translate tactically, but biplane air combat looks fantastic! If somehow they can inspire heroism, sacrifice, and selflessness in a game about WWI and celebrate the small victories in a war that lost so much on all sides, I'm in. If they cater to the me-first generation and make it about individual glory, I am skeptical.

Always loved WW shooters and was quite sad during the period of "They suck, we need amazing modern weapons with paint on them" games.

The name of this game however ... no one is ever going be able to convince me this makes any sense at all. "So buddy, what's one of your favorite games?" "Battlefield one" "Like ... the first one?" "No, the last one". No, the WW 1 joke doesn't make up for it.

This might sound silly but i feel...almost insulted for the style of trailer to depict something like ww1. One of the most gruelling industrial slaughterhouse of the 20th century put to dubstep and bombastic teenage violence visuals. Way to be off tone

Will probably be the first time in years I actually buy a military multiplayer fps game. Really hope they pull off what this trailer is presenting to us.

Where was this confirmed or talked about?

It was a trailer designed to create hype for a game that's about blowing up and shooting things. What did you expect, Lawrence of Arabia to introduce a Battlefield game?

Right, and I (and one other at least) addressed exactly that. Why this game why now. If this is how you feel about the subject matter, follow Anita Saekesian's lead and spotlight the industry as a whole.

Man I'm still pretty damn surprised they are going for this setting, it's bold.

I'm extremely hopeful that they can throw together a decent campaign. Even so I'll get this just because I think it's cool they took a bit of a risk and switched up the setting in a big way.

You're crazy if you think there will be no aim assist, especially on consoles.

It's a pretty good trailer.

COD will probably outsell it near a 2:1 pace. I'll get both

I think a somber song could of been a better choice also I'm insulted anytime a trailer is synced to dubstep. It's just like oh yeah we need a trailer song should we get something original or plug some dubstep that's sitting around?... PFFFT DUBSTEP WOMPWOMPWOMPWOMPWOMPWOMP...

Oh, I just reread your post and I did kind of just reiterate your point. Oops!

While I personally don't have any problem with WWI being depicted this way, I do think it's a very interesting sentiment.

If you've been paying attention to the FPS industry for the past 5-10 years and the future 1-2 years then "Why this game, why now" is a non-question.

JackFrags YouTube video mentions it.

Thanks. Really good news then!

So, uhh, it's gonna be a bit more difficult to strap some dynamite sticks to the horses and ride them into battle now...
Poor little horsey.

Not trying to pick on COD but compare how bombastic that trailer was and shit flying everywhere yet there was zero gravitas and I was left feeling cold, yet with BF1s trailer, things felt like they had weight and not cheap, so to speak even with just as much action on screen.

Even comparing character models, COD has lifelike looking characters but it doesn't impress me in any way. This impressed me. Maybe its the COD engine, something about it feels so cardboardy.

It's true you never see Indian people in games, yet all I hear is about black character under-representation. If you want an injustice it's these other minority groups being almost totally non-existent in games.
I don't want to make it a competition but if anyone is going to whine about under-representation it better be about the 2 million adult and child participants from India and not just whatever is en vogue in the United States.

Do people actually think of EA as a conservative company?

They publicly march in gay pride parades in every city they're in.

They encourage staff to feel comfortable being publicly transgendered.

They put out AAA games starring women.

They have multiple AAA projects being helmed by women.

There was already a black man on the cover for Battlefield Hardline, which starred a hispanic man, a black man, and an asian woman.

They're not exactly Trump-central.

I really hope the campaign focuses mostly on the European power. This wasn't America's war, we helped, but it wasn't our conflict. If more than one mission is about Americans then they've failed me.

I want to play as the French, Germans, Ottomans, Italians, Indians etc. If it's just Americans (and probably British) then it's a huge waste of the setting. There were heroes on all sides, and there were no bad guys.

This turns my stomach. Just flat out the most offensive game I've ever seen.

I can name family members that died in this conflict, wept at the pictures and accounts of the dead and maimed that experienced this hell, was taught all the horrors of it from primary school, through my whole life, it's only ever been a symbol of the folly of war, the worst, most black and shameful era of British and European history. I've been to the actual battlefields and mass graves across Europe, held the minutes silence without fail every rememberence day my entire life, for as long as I could understand the meaning of it.

There was no glory in this war. No thrilling action or daring do, no heroes and villains, this was mass murder, a scar on the history of our species, and every single person involved in it was a victim.

This trailer, the entire concept of this game, makes me feel physically sick, and just so fucking angry.

How fucking dare anyone make a game like this about the First World War.

I don't know what's worse, the sick fucking emotionless, greedy cunts that would seriously exploit this horror of an industrialised massacre, or the ignorant, soulless bastards that will give them money and enjoy it.

Anyone involved in this, or seriously think of buying this, should be ashamed of themselves.

OMG! Another SJW "offended", just don't look at the game, don't buy the game, jesus fucking christ on a chicken basket! when will your kind go away? It's a game, dammit, shut the fuck up. I'm buying it, and playing the crap out of it.
