Watched Stewart since the beginning. Tried watching Noah, couldn't last longer than 2 weeks and I haven't watched since. You can't replace Stewart.

He'd be okay on his own but he just doesn't hold a candle to Jon if you compare the two.

I bounce in between episodes even when Stewart was at the helm. Make him work for it. I think he'll find his way in another season.

I trailed off on The Daily Show a couple of years ago since going cable-free, but I haven't had any incentive to tune in for the show other than for Jon's final week.

Last Week Tonight's pretty much my go-to show now.

Took Jon a couple of years to put his stamp on this show.

Give Trevor a couple or years too geez.

A couple of years? The Daily Show was a joke when Stewart took over. He left it one of the most important tv shows on at the time. Expectations are completely different now.

I was a pretty big fan of TDS in high school, but it was Stewart who drew me in, and it was him I wanted to see.

I haven't really seen the show since he left, so I can't say anything about its quality one way or another, but give thr guy some time. THE Daily Show wasn't popular over night, it took time. Sometimes, these things take tme.

To be fair: Comedy Central in general has lost a lot in the satire news market with Colbert AND Stewart leaving. I don't think Noah is bad per se, but he isn't Stewart. And Colbert on Late Night has been really weak (IMO) everytime I've tuned in versus the Report where he was having to play a character every day. That's not to say Colbert as himself isn't funny, he is. But himself on network TV is too muted.

Daily Show with Jon Stewart was unique. It was going to be near impossible to replace him especially in the social media and streaming era. I think John Oliver has largely replaced what Jon Stewart did.

God damn, they ether him. Holy crap. Liberals aren't happy they lost Jon Stewart.

IS there even a they? This lady has been hitting at Trevor Noah pretty hard since the switch.
the first article was amused..by the fifth I knew it was a thing.

and who the fuck is she thanking for Trump? anyone with a presscard should be trying to choke themselves with it at this point.

oh. oh...she's blaming Trevor for Trump because Jon was supposed to save us? The media became a joke and that is the punchline?

Hasn't Salon been on him since the start? I could have sworn we had articles posted here about them already giving the guy shit.

Also, lol at the idea that John Stewart could have done anything about Trump.

I'm fine with saying Trevor Noah is not as funny or witty as Jon Stewart; that's a matter of preference, but it's fine to say.

The insinuation that Stewart was somehow "balancing the force" and keeping Fox News and the GOP in check is a gross lie or a disturbingly wrong impression. During his "reign," Fox News only increased in viewership and influence and the GOP got stronger in its grip on Congress. Did his show have anything to do with it? NO! It's largely inconsequential to politics, and only really matters to bloggers talking about who eviscerated whom.

If his show had any impact, it was instilling progressives with a sense of false comfort that some good was being done in the world. Jon's voice was great to have, but it wasn't a substitute for real activism and it's sad (Sad!) that Salon and similar outlets and their readers think it was.

Sam Bee's delivery and...perspective...are way better than Noah, but she also has the benefit of having a fully week to research and develop stories and pieces. Her show is amazing. I love her.

It does royally suck that Stewart and Colbert jumped ship right before this incredible election season. I barely watched them but I would have probably caught every episode this year.

Trevor is a fine host and has solid comedic sensibilities, he just doesn't have Jon's teeth.

Regardless of what Jon Stewart always claimed, The Daily Show at it's best was political editorial delivered in a funny way - not a "fake news" comedy show.

Should have been Sam Bee. Her show is infinitely better than TDS now.

Really too bad Sam B. can't caption her web episodes. :| I blame TBS wholly for that, even Comedy Central on Youtube subs. So I can't watch Sam B at all.
And to be fair, Last Week Tonight/Oliver doesn't caption too well either. Ugh.

I think one of the biggest issues is that it's clear that he has no idea what the hell he's talking about. When he talks about our politics and criticizing them, it's not his voice or his opinion, it's his writers. When he does interviews with other people, there's never any hard hitting questions like you'd sometimes get with Jon.

Jon could go off the dome on other shows and he'd be just as great as he was when he was riding what was pre-written for the show. It's because he was ingrained with the politicians of America, he knew exactly what he was talking about because he had spent years upon years talking about it.

It's clear Trevor is just some dude who has basic knowledge of what's going on.

Ether? This is just boring. I say this as someone who has never seen a Trevor Noah Daily Show and didn't especially like the Jon Stewart Daily Show. Just read the article. It's nothing. Look at the author's past articles. It's impossible for me to imagine that a person of reasonable intelligence, and she presumably is if she's a comp. lit professor, could devote their brain to doing something less interesting or useful than this column. I didn't go in and read all the articles but the titles alone make it clear that they're navelgazey, boring, and inert.

I agree, to an extent, but I think John Oliver is having the same kind of cultural impact at a similar, if slightly diminished, level. His Trump evisceration was incredible and widely shared.

Stewart is a tough act to follow, impossible maybe. I understand why he handed over the reigns when he did, but damn do we need him now more than ever with all the bullshit going on right now.

tried to watch a few episodes of his and couldn't continue. That being said, sounds like a pretty nasty article for no good reason.

Seems harsh and premature. Y'all remember the Daily Show marathon they streamed as Jon was leaving last year? He (and The Daily Show itself, really) didn't really start to come into his own until after September 11 when both the tone of the show began to change for the better and the absurd saga of the Bush Administration really got underway. It takes time.

He and the show are both pretty mediocre. But, they're fucking amazing compared to Larry Wilmore's show. That shit is painfully un-funny. Comedy Central is pretty well dead to me outside of South Park now.

Pretty much lost me when the author applied descriptions like "important work" and "sharp satire" to The Nightly Show of all things.
