Total War: Warhammer review thread

Thought this would end up bad, nice surprise. Shame about Denuvo, will get it on a sale. Too risky getting a game from them during launch.

Popping into the thread made me remember how much I used to loved playing Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat. Had all but forgotten about it, which is a shame. Might pick it up on GOG as well as Total.

So, question.

I've never played a Total War game. Even when it comes to Warhammer, I've only dabbled in it a little bit, I mostly just know what it is and some basic concepts about it. But I think this game looks really cool.

Is this a good place to jump in? Will I be lost when it comes to how to play this thing? Is there a good place to go to for help? I have very little RTS experience.

Total War is a good way to jump into RTS. The battles themselves don't have things like supply and base building so it's just the tactical combat to consider. All of them have a Pause and Issue Orders button in single player so you can take your time too.

There's a campaign map that is turn based where you grow your cities and armies similar to a Civilization game.

Typically each game also has a dedicated Tutorial campaign that teaches the basics.

I imagine with the new attention the property + being a fantasy game in general, they'd probably realize they have a lot of new eyes on the franchise and will consider them, so it's probably one of the better jumping on points.

I enjoyed Atilla. The new stuff they added worked really well. Different enough to distinguish it from Rome II. The horde mechanic is pretty interesting though it definitely takes some getting used to if you've played the "normal" way for so long. It was also a pretty good feeling to just destroy settlements. I recently got a beefed up rig so I was finally able to play it for real.

Better than ROME II from a technically and gameplay perspective (talking about post fixes of course), but I'm not a fan of the structure of the main campaign. It's the migration period and the empires I wanted to play are huge and sprawling and crumbling, so it was hard to get into for me.

I LOVED the Charlemagne DLC campaign though. As close to Medieval 3 as we're likely to get until... well, Medieval 3 ;)
Thank you gents.

Same for me. As much as people might want to sugar coat it, Denuvo games are not full price games for me.

Definitely a shame, considering that the game looks good, but you have to save some games for the sales.

Cool! Thanks for the answer.

When they're a complete pack, and on sale :p

Preloaded and ready. Very happy to see the good reviews. I was worried given the lack of marketing and early impressions. TW and Warhammer seem like the perfect combo.

Note that he does not have the Unlimited Video Memory setting enabled when he switches to medium settings. If it works like Rome 2 and Attila, unless you check that box, the game will automatically downgrade the visuals to get more performance. We don't know if he enabled it for ultra settings, if he didn't then it puts the performance in the first part of the video into question.

Definitely looks like it runs better than Rome 2 and Attila though, first week impressions will be interesting.

Too early to make a PC Benchmark thread, but I think people like to know a bit more about performance and I hope you all are okay with me putting this in a review thread...

First benchmarks... NO day one patch, no optimized drivers so far. Tested with AMD (Crimson Edition Hotfix 16.5.2.1) and Nvidia (Version 365.19).

Niedrige Details = low settings
Mittlere Details = medium settings
Hohe Details = high settings
A gtx 970 can drop down to 40 fps on high details (mentioned in text)

The game has currently performance problems with AMD cards, in despite of being part of AMDs gaming evovled program. A day one patch and/or new amd drivers could fix that.

No major other bugs or performance hick ups, but a problem with MSAA:

Savegame erstes laden = Loading a savegame for the first time
Ende der Rune, Berechnung der KI-Züge = End of turn AI calculations
Laden einer Schlacht Viele Einheiten, großes Schlachtfeld = Loading a battle (A lot of units, large battlefield)
Savegame Laden aus dem Spiel heraus = Loading a savegame out of a running game

edit:
I'm also weak and bought the game...

Stupid me

I assume those are DX11 results? AMD probably has the usual CPU bottlenecking going on. With DX12 they should be doing much better, but of course it might still need some patches and drivers before we see how the performance settles.

Of course dx 11. Nobody knows when we'll get the dx 12 patch.
Besides, not everybody is on win10...

Yeah amd is dOing really well in dx12.

No 780ti benchies yet I guess. Too early.

Oh that is actually intriguing to me. I haven't bought it but I just might now. The AoC dlc that is.

Is this game releasing simultaneously in all regions? Or can we use a vpn client to unlock it early?
