Total War: Warhammer review thread

I've never played a Total War game. They always seemed so intimidating and complex. This one looks really good!

No worries. In game tutorials are always really good and you learn easily by playing the campaign. It's all quite intuitive and easy to understand. And its goddamn fun

Finally a sequel to Dark Omen and Shadow of the Horned Rat.

If you really want to get into the weeds they can be fairly complex but you can definitely pick up enough through tutorials and the early stages of a campaign to get by, don't be intimidated.

Looking at the price options
"Rekord low: 0,01€ GreenMan Gaming on 11.6.2015"

I feel like I missed a deal.
Gonna pick this up as soon as I'm done with Stellaris

Probably DLC again. It's more of an age rating issue than a money grubbing issue, the German USK for example will not give a game a higher rating (and Sega will try to avoid 18+ or even 16+ ratings if they try to go the same route as with past TWs) if 'more brutal animations and blood' are content that has to be bought extra (if even for 0.01 cents) as long as it's not free to simply download. Of course Sega also enjoys the extra cash they can get out of it, so there's that.
Doesn't make much sense given that pretty much all water games are m-rated and have blood and Gore...including Sega published Dawn of War 2.

Not really, Dx/OpenGL injection still functions I believe, so long as the app is a standard windows app. And if the dev wants to support mods, it certainly be possible. But yes, likely anything that intends to mess with the executable won't work unless it's exposed deliberately by the developer.

In my ideal world Dev would implement denuvo for the first 6 months or so, with proper mod support - all data files and references available outside of the executable, preferably with a toolset that allows access to some of the running game's memory via API through Denuvo.

Then in 6 months or so, denuvo is removed in a patch for full third party mod access.

Well, actually in an idela world people wouldn't pirate PC games :)

Probably won't happen as it might help comparing the executables and understand how it works.

Basically, if you provide a "clean" exe then it's likely crackers will understand how to make proper cracks.

“Come join us in a war against these guys,” they’d ask, with great frequency. “We’ll give you lots of gold.” How could I refuse? So I’d take their cash and join their war, and then I do… absolutely nothing. I had my own wars and worries. And then I’d get the inevitable message from, let’s say the Vampire Counts, asking me to leave the war. And yes, they’d offer me money too. So I’d take it. A few turns later… “Come join us in the war against these guys. These same guys. Here’s some cash again, too.”

This went on and on, and nobody seemed to care that I was constantly leaving wars or that I wasn’t actually participating in them. I was rich, and I didn’t have to do anything.

I could make a storyline in my head about this

My own selfish, conniving greedy Dwarf general

Cool thanks i'll look up some noob tutorials for myself tonight. I am really tempted to try this.

Man oh man I hope they eventually cover most of the races. So badly want to see Skaven, Lizardmen, Tomb Kings, Wood Elves, and Bretonnians. What geographical area does the game cover (now)? Mainly the Empire?

Thanks, trying to decide between this and Overwatch next week.

Well, being brutally pragmatic, Overwatch is dependent on having active playerbase and day one playerbase is the only guaranteed playerbase there's going to be, and if you're playing Total Warhammer for the singleplayer it probably won't hurt to pick it up a few patches and maybe an expansion pack down the line.

...I had no idea this released in 5 days. Is it just GAF ain't hyping or as the release marketing just been light?

I suppose I'm going to be waiting anyhow (time and PC reasons) but still haha I was looking forward to release hype.

Man I miss SSI box arts.
I actually was a big fan of Shadow of the Horned Rat.. it was right around the time I actually discovered my first White Dwarf magazine and bought my first Ork boyz... 5 fighters and 5 archers. Speaking of which, I just checked the Games Workshop website holy shit are they expensive now, $340 for 9 boyz and a few mounts, or $215 for a boss haha...I used buy boxes for $20-30 Canadian of just those generic plastic models ;p

I think I heard somewhere that they're introducing factions(like 3 or 4) through large expansions that also expand the Grand Campaign map. I'm sure one of those factions will be in the first expansion.
I bet the next big expansion is going to be Elves. Skaven and Lizardmen should be the big expansion after that. Bretonnia should be the first DLC faction since they're already in the game.

I believe that the map covers all of the Old World. From what I gather, Bretonnia and Bretonnian units are in the game (and playable in multiplayer), but they aren't available for the Grand Campaign.

so you know what I miss when I started a new grand campaign map is that you started with 1 maybe 2 cities and had all these barbarian cities next to you and the game organically grew and you decided which direction you wanted to go. I'm sad that barbarians weren't more aggressive to become attackers.

Nowadays there are no barbarian cities and the game just seems to start the same the overland map has disappeared you must head one direction to face that enemy early on.

Medieval total war 2 was last time I felt like a new grand campaign was different everytime.

Shit I'm a little unhappy this is good. Blood and Wine. Stellaris. FFX remaster. Now Total Warhammer.

What do I do I need more time.

That's great to hear, thanks! Means Wood Elves should be soon-ish too given their proximity to Empire and Bretonnia. Skaven too, of course.
