Kotaku: XB1 Slim 2016, More Powerful XB1 Scorpio/VR 2017, iterative boxes from now on

I am interested in the Oculus rumors. I wonder if Microsoft and Oculus are developing a VR headset specifically for the new Xbox or that the current Oculus Rift can be used on the new Xbox.

Surely it would be the current one. No one would buy another just for the Xbox. Especially when MS are trying to push this whole Xbox + PC family thing.

Excited to see the Oculus capability. I hope that turns out to be true.

That's the part that's most interesting to me. Implies the next Xbox will be a tech monster considering what kind of pc is required to run the oculus. I was thinking they'll give specs at E3 but they could always do their own event ala PSX and talk about all this. Exciting stuff.

Aren't the requirements high for it though?

Unless Scorpio will also benefit from the power of the cloud.

Yes. They are pretty high, which means the next console would be a very significant upgrade. Cloud processing wouldn't help with the console's ability to work with Oculus.

Exactly. Beat me. :)

Sounds smart. Wonder what being late to the home VR game might do though.
And what that means for the software lineup / current Xbox One? Would that support it? Possibly no, right?

Oculus support would be a good reason to get me interested in an upgrade... interesting anyway.

If the Oculus thing is true, PSVR just got quite the slap in the face, since it makes much more sense to get a Rift, which works on PC and Xbox One instead of a VR device that only works on the PS4.

I'm not sure I agree. It comes down to software ultimately. Being able to use a device on both platforms isn't worth much if there's not good software and games to drive that. Also iirc Sony didn't rule out the possibility of PSVR PC support right?

No.

If the next Xbox is using AMD Polaris/Vega, it's a significant upgrade.

You're right, if.

I doubt Microsoft is going to decide to want to tower over the competition anyway when it comes to specs. It's a lot more likely this is their PS4K competitor. Surely they realize that being in a similar spec / price range will be beneficial in terms of third party games and market adoption.

Seriously, power isn't the only reason why the Xbox One is getting outsold.

I'd say the first. Took them 3 years to develop the Rift. I would be surprised if they'd be able to spit out another platform so quickly. I think they just don't have the capacity.

So PS4 Neo vs Xbox One Slim this Q4 and Xbox Scorpio (Neo competitor) next year.

Sony has first mover advantage again. Microsoft have the cushion to gauge Neo Sales as well as going in with extra GPU grunt.

Interesting nonetheless.

And yet that does nothing to correct the lack of appeal of the console outside UK/US, until they address that, there is no "vs"

Don't expect that new Xbox to any more powerful than the NEO. That's PR speak from Spencer. They'll bill it it as a more powerful machine but by and large it'll be similar to the NEO

The cloud part was just referencing the power of the cloud rubbish. The price would be very high to support Oculus.

I agree if it is Spring 2017 expect something in simillar ballpark.

But if all XBO games end up being playable on PC, you'd have no reason to own both systems in the first place. And if you've got a Rift, odds are your PC is going to be better than whatever model XBO is out.

More like extra CPU and gpu grunt. Almost guaranteed it will be using Zen cores which will be miles ahead of jaguar cores used now.
Honestly? Far too early to say that. This is AMD, after all. Their CPUs have been disappointing for the smart end of a decade, so don't take their word that this time will be better until they actually deliver.

This is a pretty good example of how important it is to be present information clearly and effectively when you compare Kotaku's story to the absolute confusion in the other thread.

I hope games released are cross-buy. Although I plan to stick with my PC I'd like know that if I ever bought an Xbox One, my games would still be available to play on that platform.

so the floor and ceiling on videogame graphix will be raised considerably soon then

So this is the end of traditional gens ha? Don't know how I feel about it, I'll miss experiencing the visual jump that we get every gen, now it will be really hard to notice it.

Sell me a normal XBONE now, then a slim XBONE in a few months and then a new XBONE2 next year. Sounds like good value for money, what with all the great games coming up....

This says to me that they are overall testing for a transition away from consoles if the iterative console strategy doesn't yield results.

This post isn't by me, it's by a guy with the same username as me.

Exactly.... It's strange to buy duplicated platforms.

Even more if the rumored xbox stick is capable of PC streaming.

So basically Microsoft is taking Valve's failure of the Steambox, infuse it with their brand. And ride the money route home. Good idea

I can guarantee you it won't be Zen.

Jaguar was at the low-end of the AMD CPU portfolio even at the time of the consoles' release, it's a netbook CPU architecture while Zen will be a desktop CPU architecture, said to be on par with Intel's Broadwell/Skylake, targeting high-end users. Not feasible in 2017 for consoles by any stretch of the imagination.

The interesting part is VR support, and not just any VR, Oculus Rift VR headset. This possibly means the new Xbox is gonna use a Zen CPU.

Yeah, this is quite the departure for MS, usually they take other companies successful ideas and try to copy them, now they are trying to copy a failed one!

This might be the last time I own a console.

I'll enjoy these machines until the new ones are announced, and then I'll sell them off and upgrade my PC.

I would have stayed with one of the manufacturers if they had stuck to a regular 5 year cycle, but with both of them going to 2/3 year increments there is just no point for me to have a console.
