Persona 5 Won't Be Out In North America Until February 2017

Really makes me wonder what the Winter 2014 version of Persona 5 would have been. You don't delay a game for nearly 2 years without having to scrap or redo giant portions of it.

Either way, just glad to finally see a more concrete sounding date.

PS4 version + HD assets for future games. Maybe during the development (2015, I guess), something happened that forced to delay even more the game.

Audience for Atlus RPGs is going to be more hardcore games and they're more likely to own multiple platforms. And honestly, any JRPG fan worth their salt is most likely going to have a 3DS at this point. SMT4 did well for Atlus so they're going to want to give it time to breathe.

And really, do you guys want Persona 5 sooner so badly that you want a rushed English translation? Atlus USA is a small company and they've got plenty on their roster this year already without trying to hurry and get their biggest RPG to date fully translated 2 months after Japanese release.
What I am puzzled about is just incompetency of Atlus between their divisions. Far smaller companies (Atlus is Sega, don't forget) manage to release games in dual audio, release PS4 versions without 2+ years of delay, manage to communicate between their divisions normally and even sell their games to that big country called Europe.

Shit like Atlus USA just starting localization work this year or just now investigating dual audio options and no word about European localization point to issues in Atlus corporate structure. P5 is their biggest release in almost a decade if not ever, and it should have been all hands on deck.

Instead we have amateur hour with US division insisting on release 3 years in a row, not managing to write JPN VA contracts for 2016, no communication between divisions, and a failure to properly address a huge market of over 500 million people which is also a PS4 stronghold.

Honestly, I'm happy to just have a set day. Sure it's farther than most of us probably hoped, but at least we know how long we have to wait. I'll be patient until they put out another trailer and I lose my mind.

Yeah, a solid date is a huge deal. It sucks, but it's so nice to know the guessing is finally over.

I doubt the game was anywhere near completion at all. My guess is that Index's problems and the subsequent Sega shuffle had disrupted the production schedule until the transition was firmed up.

Odin's Sphere is an Atlus game right? That has dual audio.

Technically a Vanillaware game, but Atlus (both JP and USA) is publisher of the game. It's not a surprise that Velvet is called that way :p

Odin Sphere had JP audio even in its original release, so I would guess Vanillaware influenced some way to make this happen.

Hey, they also reconfirmed the PS3 version and gave details on the PS4 special edition, that's pretty cool.

Thanks for this!!!

Preordered!

$77.93 after 20% discount and tax added!

Can't wait to play this. Though I hope FF12ZA doesn't release before or too soon after, but I wouldn't be surprised if 12ZA drops before fiscal year end; though perhaps after year end?

(Atlus is Sega, don't forget)

And having their parent company collapse for illegal activities & being bought by somebody else certainly can't have helped their development process.

manage to release games in dual audio

Atlus Japan is deathly afraid of reverse importation. A stupid fear, but it is what it is. And voice acting contracts in Japan can be messy and demand for Japanese voices outside Japan is just a vocal minority so it's often considered an unnecessary expense.

release PS4 versions without 2+ years of delay

I really hope that nobody thinks that adding a PS4 port is what caused the delay and not them making their biggest RPG to date (which also happens to be one of their first major HD games developed in-house).

I don't disagree with you that Atlus Japan should get things in order, especially when it comes to releasing their games overseas in Europe, but this is all stuff we've known about for quite some time. The idea that P5 would come out in English this year was a faint hope at best once we knew how late the Japanese version was coming out.

I wonder how many copies of the PS3 version are going to be made/sold?

I was surprised they are even bringing the PS3 version to the West. I guess by the time it releases here we will know if its horrible from the Japanese release at least.

Incredibly disappointed with the lack of dual audio for this release. The japanese cast is so amazingly great, it feels like a disservice not being able to pick that...

Oh well, with some luck maybe we'll get them as DLC later or something. The post did say 'Right now', so it doesn't kill the chance off completely, r-right...?

That said, still pretty hyped for the game. And I guess if I'm forced to play with the dub, then I'd love to have Laura Bailey returning as some other character. Her role in P4 was greaaaat.

No, I mean that P5 would most likely steal some sales from TMS & SMT4-2 if it comes out this year, not the other way around.

Oh, well thats also unlikely even in reverse. If you have a Wii U what the hell else are you going to buy this summer. I mean shit i've been debating getting a Wii U for TMS for months now and if anything the P5 hype is pushing me dangerously close to ordering a Wii U today for TMS. Except for releasing all of them on top of another at once I don't see how niche RPG titles are affected to that extent. I hate to generalize but the RPG gaming niche seems to be front loaded and pretty static and faithful. Maybe deep sales on like Steam and PSN are a thing for older titles but I don't see TMS having long legs at all.

Geez some of you are so impatient. You have waited for P5 this long, a couple more months won't kill ya.

I'm stoked we have a solid date, this is fantastic.

I too got my order in.

As much as I want to play FFXII:TZA and finally experience the Zodiac Job System. P5 is priority, I've at least played FFXII.

John posted on Twitter about the possibility of dual audio

I don't believe in Dual Audio for a second at this point.

Bbut that's cool, my CFW PS3 does what Atlusdoesn't.

OI hate to generalize but the RPG gaming niche seems to be front loaded and pretty static and faithful.

Admittedly, it's dirt cheap, but our RPG, Cthulhu Saves the World has sold reasonably well for years. Very not-frontloaded. The Penny Arcade RPGs were more frontloaded than that, but they were also more niche and more importantly, they were part of an ongoing narrative so it was more of a diehard fan thing.

Obviously, Atlus thinks that their games can sell well over time otherwise they wouldn't do so many digital sales.

It's like... another half a year. For a game that's been delayed like 2 years already.

Persona 4 came out almost 8 years ago. 5 months isn't going to kill anybody. I'm thrilled we finally have a set date.

We should get some more info on that during E3 as well. They said they would reveal the release window at E3.

Personally speaking, TLG actually does look far along enough that a holiday 2016 is a safe bet. Also a safe bet that Nier will be a 2017 release.

TLG I think will be this year. Nier.... not so much.

I honestly expect late spring or early summer 2017.

Nier is not coming out this year.. SE is stacked.

Thanks everyone for the replies!
I don't know... I think its unlikely to see TLG this year, giving how much information we have about, besides the reveal for PS4.

About Nier Automata, I hope it comes this year. But apparently not then! :/

It sucks.

I guess I have other things to occupy myself then sitting around waiting on video games. Sure it sucks but come on, I would rather wait half a year then it be delayed again.

If it got delayed again the salty tears would be even sweeter. Coming Winter 2018, the meltdown would be glorious.

Nintendo is publishing so you can rule out most sales. Also you're talking about a niche game that is being released on a dead system.

Almost all of the sales are going to be in the first two months.

Funny to think there was a time when Atlus games were hard to find if you didn't pre-order.
Even knowing about the abundance of stock these days, that mentality is still in my head haha...
It's like Atlus and Nintendo switched roles. Nowadays, if you miss a Nintendo CE, Good freaking luck.

To be honest, I would've rather have Nintendo translating TMS instead of Atlus if that meant we would be able to get P5 sooner (yes, yes censorship, I know)

I'm stoked we have a solid date, this is fantastic.

The game is nearly a decade in the making, was promised twice before, and finally pushed back to another year today. It will be 2 and half years from when the game was originally promised.

So yea, it is a little agitating to see the goal posts keep moving, even if we knew it coming. Granted, the Persona series is pretty close to my heart, and one of the few game series I would drop literally everything to play.

On the bright side, it's not like last year where I had to wait 8 months for FE Fates.

I could see the Collector's Edition staying up for a while.

Atlus always overprints their CEs.

There's still some copies of the Persona Q CE going around.

Is that more because those are niche though?

I swear the Catherine CE was a bit harder to get. Not overly hard, but it sold out at a few places.

Robert, your RPGs are like $2-$3. That's a a Tall cup of Starbucks. Let's not compare to $60 games :p.

Now, CSH is a different animal and I really hope it has long legs, game looks great.

I don't even want to know what the hell Atlus management is thinking in regards to dual audio or Europe but they seem to do well with higher prices releases on the front end (3DS and Vita) and then doing rapid sales starting 3-6 months in and dropping in price like a rock after a year.

Even if you don't think TMS will have any effect on P5 and vice versa, you really think that releasing SMT4 Final & Persona 5 at around the same time is a good idea? You really think that when offered a choice between "Biggest budget JRPG we've ever done in our most popular series" and "Here's a cheap direct sequel to a mid-budget portable RPG that you probably never finished and we're going to charge you an extra $10" that people aren't going to think "Maybe, I should just buy Persona 5 and skip SMT4 Final?"

A decade in the making? I don't think so. If I recall correctly 2010 is when we started even HEARING rumors about P5. The newly made Persona Studios was making Catherine. So it's not like they were actively making P5 for a whole decade.

Sure two delays sucks but I would rather wait 6 more months and have a solid date then hear another delay.

where are you guys seeing the preorder on Amazon?

search isn't bringing it up for me. Amazon has been weird about preorders lately. i've had 2 of them canceled and the game unlisted, and then lots of stuff that's been confirmed for a long time not being on the site at all.

Dammit. I was hoping it'd at least be in January. Trying to avoid spoilers in threads for five months is going to suck.

The retail sets are underwhelming. I just want the soundtrack disc, but apparently I can only get that with the $90 version? Remember the days when Atlus bundled the soundtrack for free? :(

Also not a fan of the standard case cover. Looks way too busy. Wish they had used the bold red and black graphic style of the game.

People who are going to buy SMT 4 sequel know what they are getting into and P5 has no relationship to it. If they are going to pony up $50 for the game, they beat SMT IV and liked it and are ready for the sequel.

If P5 hypothetically released 2 weeks later, maybe it would have cannibalized some sales, otherwise meh, it don't matter. People either buy Atlus 3DS games on release or wait till $20 sale in 6 months.

Specifically, what I was referring to is the time since P4 was released in Japan. Given the relative success at the time, the writing was on the wall for a P5 to be made, even if development didn't start until much later. (And even later still for full development)

Dang it . It seem like every game that I am hyped for is delayed. I was hoping that we would get persona 5 sometime this year .
