Digital Foundry: Spec Analysis: Xbox Project Scorpio

This is going to end badly for the xbox division imo.

1. XB2 will cost significantly more than NEO for questionable gains (worsening CPU-GPU imbalance + every dev will be targeting vanilla PS4 as base)

2. The target audience of XB2 overlaps with the PC crowd, and the sharing of exclusives is only going to entice them to go full PC instead.

Very wrong. Xbox division is actually enlarging their target audience with the PC audience by this move. Income comes mostly from software than hardware.

So let them go full PC. It's all about the software.

Digital Foundry saying the Scorpio is likely to use a version of the Jaguar CPU sounds crazy, surely a Zen CPU is more likely.

The Scorpio is going to be a flagship for the Xbox brand, I think its going to be more expensive than people expect.

So what's the betting say?

$600 plus VR kit? $700 seems a stretch.

How did Rise of the Tomb Raider do on PC?

Are PC enthusiasts really going to embrace the Windows Store and UWP apps console like restrictions?

I'm not so sure.

with Microsoft utilising the top-tier parts available from hardware partner AMD - technology we've yet to see fully revealed in the PC space.

What exactly does this mean? Sounds like there's more to this than mere Teraflops.

No point having 6TF GPU and 320GB/s bandwidth if a lightweight Jaguar CPU is feeding them.

If they just want to render games at higher resolutions (without drawing more objects etc.) then the CPU doesn't need to do any more feeding than it is now.
Of course that's probably not what many developers will want to do.. but, we'll see.

I think we could be looking at slightly upgraded Jaguar cores (Puma..) at higher clock speeds.

Scorpio is for the PS4/X1 grass difference is huge and meme worthy while the difference between PC and PS4 is meh crowd.

can't speak for everyone but if there are games i want and they don't come in another form after 1-2 years i will at some point.

it's like asking why i buy ps4 or use origin.

I wonder how loud this will be if they actually render games at 4k. Every time I play at that res with my 980ti the volume spikes considerably, and my computer case is already quite isolated when it comes to sound (R4).

There will obviously be newer and more energy efficient hardware in the Scorpio console by the time it releases, maybe that's already enough.

It's because the CPU will bottleneck it if it's still using jaguar.

why would it use jaguar tho ? goes against everything they said about it yesterday. they wont put in 12 gigs of gddr5 a 6tf gpu and bottleneck it with a current gen cpu i dont believe that for a second

especially since its coming q4 2017

with over 4 times the performance on gpu alone ? i highly doubt it
Doesn't really matter if the games are not made that GPU in mind. PC GPUs already have over 4 times the performance of PS4 or Xbox One and yet the biggest differences in multiplatform games are resolution, AA and framerate. The base game is still relatively same.

Considering I already have a PC more powerful than Xbox Scorpio..I don't really care.
Yes UWP is limited but so is a console no? In which case why should I ever go for the inferior one when I already have a superior machine?

Uncompressed pixels I guess it was a mistake and the guy meant uncompressed textures.

Considering they said "best quality pixels" afterward (or was it "highest quality pixels"?), I doubt it.

If Scorpio turns out as powerful as it's slated to be, I'll probably buy one. I've been a PC/PS4 gamer until now.

Glad other people noticed they referred to both SoC and GPU when mentioning 6TF. Still waiting for MS statement to see what they actually meant.

Personally you don't generally mistakenly say SoC when you mean GPU

Not read the article yet, hate to give credence to speculation especially coming from an outfit like DF. From my own thoughts the memory bandwidth seems to means GDDRx5 on a 256bit bus.

It doesn't really matter. The CPU is insignificant in this calculation.

If the choice is between buying on Steam or buying on Windows Store most will choose Steam. But here we're talking about games not present on PC before, I think most will accept this compromise if they're interested in the games.

figured as much

I truly think Microsoft is turning this around with play anywhere games and clearly they have a clear vision and learned from the first reveal. The conference was the best by far and Sony's one was middcore and with first titles with release date announce mostly getting delayed as usual and with the Crash remaster troll made everything worse.

Not just about power but there's a clear vision.

The Neo is the "PS4S", the real upgrade will come further down the line

BELIEVE

No need to believe, I'm pretty sure that this is exactly how it will be.

No point having 6TF GPU and 320GB/s bandwidth if a lightweight Jaguar CPU is feeding them.

CPUs are increasingly less important in graphics so if this upgrade is mostly for graphics while they plan to retain the compatibility with XBO/XBOS then it makes sense to not upgrade the CPU by a lot.

"we can render fully uncompressed quality pixels... the best quality pixels", that's so Trump ...
Well the entire unveil of hw was pretty nauseating and devoid of any information, so that's pretty Trump as well.

That said, DF is very, very wrong about their assessment of 4k.

This is the vision of Nadella and Spencer finally setting their own stamp on things. Last years it was more damage control and work with what you got.

Good on MS for doing what they think they need to do. Sadly for them they don't have the games that I want to play.

I would have still bought a PS4 over the Xbox had the power gap been reversed because at the end of the day I go where the games I want to play are. The same reason I will buy Nintendo's new machine.

It's not about power, it's about games. And on that ground I'm still not feeling Microsoft one bit.

Thanks for showing up to Scorpio hardware speculation guys. This doesn't seem like concern at all. It's all about the games now. Earlier it was about which console could play those third party games better, but not anymore.

Extremely Trump. Because comparing consoles to racist right wing tools is appropriate.

You guys are killing me.

I need those uncompressed pixels!

Seriously though, I think this announcement a little odd coming this early. They pretty much are killing sales of the S before it is released.

Uncompressed pixels mean pixels that aren't upscaled right? I think he means native 4k..not Not that I agree we'll get that with much regularity.
