Breath of the Wild is the official subtitle for Zelda U/NX, first gameplay trailer

The last shrine they showed should prove how complex these will become the further you get in the game. Everyone should watch that last treehouse segment. Great sequence of puzzles.

Even if that boxart were final, imagine how nice it would look with gold foil and matte effects.

Aww, Tree house is finished but it was fun!

See ya, tomorow for more treehouse.
Man, that arrow effect is so good!

pfft, this could be a Ride to Hell sequel and it'd still be my game of the show on the merit of its mechanics, which somehow don't appear quite as dated to me as they do to you, and yet I'm pretty fuckin' critical of Zelda games for exactly that reason...

I'm truly at a loss as to how anyone could see what I'm seeing right now and consider it dated.

Yep...plenty of AAA games are dated because of their mechanics... not because of what they look like in my opinion. I just saw a ton of fresh puzzle solving in the shrines that they showed in the stream. Not looking dated at all to me. Dated to me is heading towards an icon, watching a cutscene, then heading to the next icon, and then watching another cutscene.

You can totally compare the map to games like Witcher.
It's open world forests and cliffs, not that hard.

That aspect of this game absolutely looks dated, and that's because it is, since it's running on very dated hardware (the wiiu's).
Hell, at times it even looks more sparse than Dragon's Dogma, and that's saying something.

Not hard to imagine why some of us think it doesn't look that hot.

Obviously it looks dated technically, it's on the Wii U. What a completely pointless statement. lt's like complaining about the fluidity of sand.

l dont see how it's dated gameplay wise. What are these revolutionary elements TW3 brought to the table that are supposed to show how 1928 Breath of the Wild is? Sex scenes on Unicorns?

People keep talking about this guardian fight segment, but who was impressed by the smoothness of the Gliding to Shieldboarding to Gliding segment ?

I still hate this dumb open world resource management trinket crafting BS in modern LoZ and I still think it feels very out of place, but the puzzle/obstacle/item designs that they showed off in the stream looked pretty damn good; my fears about the former elements neutering the dungeon design have been somewhat alleviated.
I'm slowly warming up to this thing; I'll probably be more excited once we get more info on the narrative elements and the true dungeons.

So with weapon durability in the game, the Master Sword is probably going to be like the Falchion right?

Infinite usage but pretty mediocre as far as damage is concerned (since it's rusted, but most likely will get a huge late game damage boost).

So that Treehouse stuff really excited me for this game. It's going to be a blast to just run around and do little puzzles and snowboarding down cliffs and hangliding and all that. This is exactly my kind of game.

And can I just say how ECSTATIC I am that there's a dedicated jump button now. YES.

we must all be very spoiled if people are calling this game ugly :/

i liked everything from the trailer. I'm really excited

I mean, we ARE spoiled, though. We've seen some amazing stuff. It's hard to not be disappointed by the graphics. I wouldn't call it ugly myself, however.

I kind of find it hard to believe Nintendo's done all this since beginning development of the game, given that last shrine. The game is so big with so many nuances. I love it.

I'm specifically talking about the gameplay. Of course a Wii U game is going to look dated next to the Jesus Christ of current-gen WRPGs. Even then, while the graphics here certainly aren't the most impressive I've ever seen, they're more than serviceable as far as I'm concerned, and there were some really amazing looking moments throughout the stream.

I think two big mistakes here were:

!) Bringing the Wii U version, like it or not, this game is getting compared to (graphically) the various Forza, Days Gone, Spiderman and whatever other open world is being show, and it's not going to show favorably.
The NX version isn't going to be completely different, but if they can improve lLOD and tree/bush density a bit, it'd help greatly.

2) Having such a long winded (hours) stream... just bring a demo with the highlight moments, so i don't have to sit in front of a screen for hours, hoping that something cool will happen.
Not only is boring, but i also can't afford to do it, flat out.

Some cool things are getting posted in GIF form in this thread, but i didn't get to see them live, because after like an hour of them running around killing random goblins, i got bored and bailed from the stream.

To all those saying the game doesn't look good, can you show me one game that has better horse animations than this?

...what.

Like, what? Me saying the game doesn't look GOOD doesn't mean there's not a single nice thing about it. That completely disregarding the fact that graphics and animation are two different things (that just happen to complement each other). I have NO problems with the animation.

Watched the whole stream, and I'm so sold. It feels so good when Nintendo surprises you pleasently every once in a while.

So it's the first entry in which we'll not be able to name Link whatever we want right ? Because there's a voice over speaking the name.
I've always called him Link so it's fine with me, I just wanted to point it out (it probably already has been hours ago though :p).

can you please quote me where I mentioned the graphics? I said that people who say the game doesn't look good overall.

For all the negative buzz that some people have attempted to generate regarding the lack of apparent things to do in this game, I'm just floored by the level of interactivity that this open world represents. I'm talking about the open world itself, and the fact that it's just packed with these little layered interactive elements that you usually don't see in games of this sort. It's one thing to compare this to Witcher 3, an amazing game with a brilliant sense of scope and an amazing story to tell - which has a fairly predictable gameplay loop that features an awesome amount of depth in its own right, tailored around questing and decision-making as opposed to straight up interaction with the world. I've never before seen an open world as malleable as this, as layered with bonafide gameplay mechanics... where I could set fire to a patch of grass, and then blast it with a gust of wind to make my own live fuse for a bomb, or use the updraft to create lift for higher jumps in platforming and combat scenarios. Or where I could see obstacles in my path, and simply punt them out of my way with a big magnet - or better yet, see an obstacle in my path like a ravine, and place my own damn bridge to get over it. Or where I could push a big boulder down a mountain specifically to crush the enemies below. Or where I could ski down a snowy mountain using my damn shield in order to build speed for a particularly long jump... etc. etc. it's one thing to compare these things superficially to other games, like "oh, game X had burning grass and world physics years ago", and it's another thing to see those kinds of features put to use in a game where they actually represent relevant gameplay mechanics that legit change the way I approach traversal through that world.

I wasn't expecting a great deal from this, but I've been thoroughly impressed by the interactivity and emergent gameplay that we've already seen, the new systems look tight and well-designed and the visual style is striking enough to render the technical shortcomings of the platform almost irrelevant to my eyes.

Probably the most roundly impressive game I've seen all show.

The only thing I do not like is the bogart.

It looks like a photoshop mockup. I really wish they would of used the art behind the logo in the trailer.

I just don't get the hate, the game isn't claiming to revolutionize anything. It's just getting back to the basics of Zelda, (open world, isolation, puzzles) everything I saw looked fine besides the jittery performance. I'm hoping that the NX version runs at locked 60fps 1080p. This game really deserves it, and it looks lovely. A nice balance between wind walker cel shading and Oot IMO.

I assumed you were talking about people who said the game doesn't look good visually. Sorry. But still, you chose a weirdly specific thing to question them on.

Funny, Dragons Dogmas gameplay is far, and I mean faaaar, outclasses witchers 3s gameplay to the point you can have way more fun despite a more barren overworld. So it doesnt really matter if this zeldas overworld isn't top notch

Thing is, it takes a game like Zelda U to teach people the value of this stuff.

They just mentioned during the Nintendo Minute stream that Link has been asleep for 100 years.

Has this already been mentioned?

Nobody is holding you at gun point to watch the stream lmao. I've only seen the official trailer they posted and a few gifs here or there on Twitter.

And even if it's not a cream of the crop visual trendsetter, like who cares? The game looks great regardless and to top it off has a great art style that will mask most shortcomings and make it look great years down the line.

Not a huge fan of Zelda. I have only played the first Zelda, ALBW, and Hyrule Warriors, but I'm excited for this after watching some gameplay videos. Day 1 for me. Never thought I would want to pre-order a Zelda game.
