Sony: Expect PlayStation VR shortages

I'm half kidding, there will be early adopters for sure.

I would have been one of them but I was hit with a large bout of Labrynthitis (inner ear infection) years ago and while it is thankfully gone I avoid anything now that could trigger vertigo

Sorry to hear that :/

Yeah inner ear stuff and VR is def an issue, my mother has a disorder that I think got passed to me somewhat in that VR can at times give me motion sickness after moving in cars and coming to a stop (post VR use). We need implant tech for more resilient vestibular systems lol.

I still have my pre-order down at Amazon but I am thinking of cancelling it until there is a bigger software library for it.

Most of the games supporting it appear to be novelty games or side missions in non vr games.

400 US dollars.. Tak Fuji "Woooooow"

This is almost going to be as bad as Magic Book or whatever the book thing was.. yeouch.

I just don't think VR is a more than a novel curiosity.. The least of all consumers who would buy it would be console gamers.

I really can't understand this opinion, surely when we've got huge multinational conglomerates like Google, Microsoft, Sony, Facebook and Valve throwing their weight behind VR as well as Samsung, LG and various other Electrical component suppliers creating headsets then it's plain to see there's a ground swell of support for this technology?

I'll be pretty sad if the Amazon preorder I made back in March (when it went up) isn't delivered at launch.

Such cynicism in this thread!

Maybe they're, you know, actually selling a decent number of units? Sony is a lot bigger name to the masses than Oculus or HTC (when it comes to gaming anyway), so would it really be that surprising for their headsets to have good sales?

How often do you see 3D TVs being pitched now?

Just because the big companies are trying to cash in on the "next big thing" doesn't mean it actually becomes the next big thing.

Don't get me wrong, VR very well could shoot off, but Just because companies are investing in it isn't a de facto win for the product.

Do you honestly see a $500 peripheral package being sold out for a long stretch of time? Unless the shipments are relatively small, I sure can't. I'm sure it will certainly sell pretty well, especially early on, but selling well is relative. Some people almost make it out like PSVR is the next iPhone. lol

I preordered at Best Buy but I have a feeling that they'll cancel my preorder like a week before it ships or something lol.

Have you played VR? There is no "could" VR is here to stay and it's only going to get better.

The only question is when are companies going to start making more consumer friendly versions like Sony because the high end ones are nice but the average consumer isn't spending $1000 on a computer and $600 on a headset and i think the xbox and sony will be great introductions as well as mobile adapting it, you can bet your sweet ass Apple will within the next 2 years will have their mobile version VR and act like they invented it and probably sell the head set for $499. Comparing 3D to VR is kind of silly considering they are wildly different experiences and VR produces wildly different content.

Just had my email saying I'm guaranteed day 1.

Classic marketing ploy:

Company: "This cool new product we have is going to sell out"
Consumer: "Shit, better order one quick"

Lo and behold, shit sells out.

A day after Sony's E3 presentation and not a single thread about any VR games on the first page.

I use Gaf as my market predictor and it doesn't seem to look to hot ;p

Good luck Sony! (more interested in the inevitable Neo)

Lol going by this logic call of duty would bomb every year.

Will probably wait until a year after release when there are more full length games out for the system. RE7 is a step in the right direction.

Most better TVs still have it, though, and lots of new 3D movies continue to be made.
3D is awesome.

Sure, 3D movies are still released in theaters, but what few times I've shopped in the DVD/BluRay sections in stores (I mainly buy movies digital), I don't see them promoting a 3D version like they did a few years ago.

Regarding 3D TVs, I don't feel like they try to market that feature nearly as much as they used to.

No, I haven't played VR. I was only trying to respond that just because these multinational mega-corporations were investing in VR isn't a sure-fire bet it will succeed.

I really don't have any idea if it will be successful or not. I just know that if they produce enough content that I personally am interested in, I will pick up a PSVR whether the mass market buys into it or not.

See to me, that tells me that supplies will be scarce. Less than what was originally proposed. That's why House made these statements.

Actually here in Australia supplies have increased for PSVR. Those in later shipment have been bumped up and Sony had increased production once initial demand for PSVR became evident when preorders opened.

I pre-ordered but after living with the Vive for a while I'm considering cancelling PSVR and waiting for reviews that aren't breathless pre-availability ones.

The novelty factor is really super high, but so far, beyond novelty, I've played absolutely nothing on Vive that makes me want to wear a VR device for hours and I've not seen anything on the horizon that would turn that around either.

VR using just little experiences demos and samplers can be justified for novelty value, but that evaporates quite quickly. I think PSVR might sell a ton based on novelty value but everything depends on whether the built for VR games hold up. Something from Batman that allows you to inspect a crime scene, or something from Final Fantasy that allows you to spectate, is not it.

Several things to take away :
-YES! I want this to be a huge success, let's do this!
-Always preorder hardware from Amazon : if you want something even a little. They charge when it ships so you have time to change your mind, but not if you didn't preorder.
-$20-40? If these are retail discs that BestBuy will stock that's $16-32! That's my price point to buy almost everything; Sounds great to me.

I got a date update from Amazon yesterday. 31st to 13th of Oct.
.

Same here. I've been paying it off with $100 Amazon Gift cards every month since the preorder went live. I think I'm going to upgrade to same day shipping get now that we know the exact date.

My Amazon preorder, made one minute after go live and with a guaranteed delivery date, just changed to no date/back ordered.

Mine was updated to October 13. Ordered basically the second it went up. Hopefully you get yours at the same time!

"PlayStation VR titles, he says, will generally range in price from $20-$40, though there will be some games at higher and lower price points."

Oh. That really short circuits a lot of the internal objections I had to many of the games being shown. That's the right call to get this thing off the ground, imo.

It will be dead, not on arrival, but a slow death. Once people get used to the novelty, it will be a hindrance, especially socially, to gaming. My brother has the Rift and Vive. I have Gear VR. At first, it was amazing. My brother got bored and sold both. I don't miss them one bit. Gear VR is only good to show parents, friends, and kids at parties.

Mine switched to the 13th also.

I still have my preorder open, but that ...what...15 minute conference on psvr did not instill a lot of confidence. I also feel they are purposely being misleading judging by comments people are making about how there will be 250 games out for the thing by 2018. Fuck, the base consoles themselves are barely getting that many.I dont know why people think devs are going to prioritize full fledged AAA games around PSVR.

I'm guessing the majority of that 250 titles will be future indie games. Whether good or not, who knows. But Rez looks great, I'm in for flying X-Wings in VR, and No Man's Sky will probably have a VR component. That's enough for me to test the technology and hopefully have more fun than nausea.

I think they need to be concerned with a drop-off in sales after the early adopters all get theirs. Keeping the supply a bit more restricted could prevent a potential disaster if this ends up being a fad like 3D or motion.

there are lots of $20-30 games with 20+ hours of content and there are also plenty of $60 games with 2 hours of content

price does not really correlate to "length"

Point me in the direction of one of these 2 hour $60 games

I'm not saying inexpensive games can't have plenty of content, just calling out the hyperbole in your argument.
