System Shock Remastered Kickstarter Launched (PC/XB1) | 900K Goal - Demo Available

Hope to fuck that gets fixed. I believe Subnautica has the same issue.

If it doesn't get corrected, it helps to manually set your refresh rate to 60hz before launching the game.

edit: To be clear, I just now launched the game for the first time. I don't have confirmation on the player movement = physics tick rate or anything. It just feels a lot like Underworld at first glance.

They're looking for about 15-20k backers. 300 early birds is around 1-2% of what they expect in total. It makes sense to me that the discount would go to the most dedicated 1-2%. I guess it wouldn't hurt if it was 5% or 10% or whatever, but I also don't feel like it makes sense to kick up a stink over $5 unless your argument is that all KS backers should get a discount. It's not like 5% or 10% wouldn't still be leaving out people backing on the first day.

I just talked to someone who has been on their mailing list since forever, he got the mail, went to KS a few seconds later and the Early Bird tier was already gone. Since I went there as soon as I read about it on GAF and still saw some available I assume someone f'd up notifying the most dedicated in a timely manner.

This.

It is not really an issue of the $5 difference.

It is that it feels like a "fuck you" when you basically had no chance of taking advantage of wanting to be an early bird.

Anyone else getting CTDs with the demo? I'm running Windows 10, Geforce driver 368.51 with 2 GTX 980 Tis in SLI.

Soon as I get off the medical bed the game freezes. I've tried downclocking both cards but not having any luck thus far....

just played the demo and it certainly feels like system shock.. didn't notice much performance issues until I picked up the gun and then the microstuttering got worse...

one thing that bothered me is picking up the items in the beginning and the character juggling them... I hope that is not a recurring thing when picking up important items..

Is in fact the worse engine of all times. Players tend to forgive its problems because is the main tool in Indie Devs hands, Indie devs that are responsible for a handful of games with great ideas that can deviate from the typical AAA pattern. But really, in the tech side, Unity deserves no forgiveness. It deserves to disappear.
LOL unity is not that bad, and has gotten much better recently

Honestly I've never had a problem with unity games on pc, only on consoles

I'm pretty sure this is similar to Underworld: Ascendant where your position in the game world is tied to the physics engine which runs at 60hz. So even if you're getting over 60 FPS on high end monitors, moving around will feel more stuttery than it should.

Standing still and moving the camera around will feel fine, you'll only notice the issue when moving your character.

edit: I made a thread about it on the Underworld forum a few months ago: https://www.othersideentertainment.com/forum/index.php?topic=1017
If that's actually the cause of the issues people are experiencing then it would be a very easy fix. All they would have to do is shorten the fixed timestep (which is 50hz by default by the way). I doubt most people are going to be bottlenecked by their CPU, so it shouldn't affect performance in any noticeable way.

That's only because you are not really sensitive to shitty frametimes.

I played the demo for 15 minutes and I've been about to throw up. I have a terrible headache.

It is that it feels like a "fuck you" when you basically had no chance of taking advantage of wanting to be an early bird.

I mean, again, it's true that you weren't in the first 1% of backers so you missed it, but the first 10% of backers has already passed so someone who, like, saw a movie or had a meeting this afternoon would miss it if they expanded the number of early-birds to 2500 which is a huge jump. It doesn't mean those people aren't hardcore fans.

It sometimes feels crummy when there's benefits to people who get in on the ground floor, but I feel like arguing for a slightly larger ground floor, just large enough to let yourself in, isn't really all that productive. And remember that this only impacts people who want to do the bare minimum pledge to begin with, so if you wanted to go for any tier higher than the bare minimum, it doesn't matter whether you missed the early bird or not.

What's the chances of one of the hidden stretch goals being VR? Now that the Lab renderer is free for Unity, could be very likely (and sorta easy for them to cram in, unless they want to give a good VR experience).

Game doesn't like overlays. Turn anything like that off.

I get about 130-150fps in this on my system. It's a bit jerky feeling though, I didn't try locking the framerate.

Demo seemed cool, I'm interested. I recently tried to play SS2 with a bunch of mods (that didnt change the game much, just modernized it a bit for modern systems and changed the controls a bit). Couldn't get into it :/

Like the game, despite its engine. Maybe their current version is doing something totall crazy, like no culling at all, but it feels all around sluggish and the frame pacing is horrid. It makes Dreamfall Chapters look fluid.
I wouldn't care if a clearly superior engine was not available for the same price point.

Yep, most of our performance problems are coming from issues with the culling system (it's a third-party solution). Our sole programmer has had to fight with it quite a bit, he hasn't had the time to deliver the K.O. punch yet :)

I haven't played the demo yet

I'm just saying other unity games have ran fine for me

And please don't make bullshit assumptions about me, thanks

I'm hoping so, because Unity really is the worst engine out there. I've backed it anyway, but I think I would of prefered this game in UE4 as opposed to Unity. Blegh, Unity.

Yeah, Unreal straight up blows it out of the water. I really wished more devs would choose it instead.

Will there be an Xbox One demo for those of us backing on that platform to try out?

No joy, having to do a hard reset every time the game freezes as well. :(

Have pledged for the collector's edition regardless of being able to test the demo out. I've always enjoyed System Shock so no-one I could miss out backing this.

A bit disappointing that Linux is a stretch goal, especially since they're using Unity anyway. I'l consider backing it once that stretch goal is reached.

Just finished the alpha demo. Wow, it's faithful to the original and love how they kept textures pixelized but in high resolution. Hope they keep that way, making it old school with modern stuff.

I have no idea what the game is about and I never bothered to give it a go, but based on the lab dismemberment and ironman mode alone, I'm backing and hoping it reaches the goal.

This could be the start of something amazing for me.

And here is my problem. Once you add stretch goals to attract people who don't care about the game, you are basically making Bioshock.

Honest question: what reasons make you go Unity over UE4 or another engine?

Are you guys using SECTR Vis or InstantOC by any chance?

Edit: Don't mean to imply I have a solution. We've been playing around with third party culling systems and have also run into some performance problems.

Been at work. I backed early and got in on the early bird. Had the page loaded and ready to go. Was like 240 left when i backed. Hopefully they get some stretch goals. 175k in first 3 hours is good i suppose. Probably means it will be funded but by how much more i dont know. My mind isnt fresh on the Kickstarter curves

Yeaah if they are skipping the PS4 I'll be skipping the kickstarter.

Same. No Mac version, either. It's a bit bizarre that they'd use Unity, but then only target XB1 and not the PS4. Does Unity have the same performance problems on XB1 that it's had on PS4?

Have you read the OP? They didn't get any dev kits from Sony.

They said Sony hadn't approached them, and I just wonder why can't they approach Sony? I mean, I know it's being kickstarted, but it sounds like they just expect hardware manufacturers to be psychic and offer them up dev kits out of the blue. That's like me making hardware design decisions at work based on which companies magically show up at my office door to give me free chip samples.

I'm going to back it for the PC version, but it's really an odd thing to say IMO.

Tried running the game in exclusive fullscreen mode(change set <m_WindowMode>ExclusiveMode</m_WindowMode> in the GameSettings.xml). Framerate seems more stable but controls are not working, neither mouse nor keyboard, anyone know how to fix this?

Where do you find that file?

Bioshock = stripped down features

Adding features = the opposite of Bioshock

I don't understand what your concern is.

You end up with something that isn't system shock. All they need to add is "rogue like features" and we have ticked all the boxes of a modern indie game that never leaves early access.

Worse, their fanbase is now very much split between people who care about SS and people who just want to see limbs flying everywhere on their xbox. They'll want more action, they'll want less of that crazy inventory thing that they can't use properly with their controller.

I would much prefer they just focus on making the game. This might seem like an over the top worry, but remember, this is a kickstarter.

Funniest kickstarter video I've ever seen.

Looking forward to this. I hope they reach there stretch goal so they include VR support. That would be awesome.

The devs are great. The remake of Turok was awesome. The only negative is the Unity engine. I hope they move to UE4 soon.

They're not gonna switch engines at this point. Practically everything will have to be remade.

Tried the demo, running not that great (whatever, it's pre-alpha), but then hit a bug where I couldn't do anything but move around and endlessly drop human body parts, building myself a little mountain of arms and legs.

GOTY?

Never did play the original but System Shock 2 was one of those transformative experiences for me. Opened my eyes to the world of PC gaming. Probably back it at $150
