Risen 3 is so monotonous. There's a pervasive feeling that it could be so much more than a mindless hack'n'slash game.

Did you know that it has ship combat? It seems that the game itself is scarcely aware.

I love it for what it is, especially for the RPG aspects. It's definitely the better RPG than what Bioware and Bethesda can come up with these days. If they can hire better combat designers, it would become the next big RPG. Here's hoping for Elex.

Lol wtf is happening here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYG0YWdkSKI

It's a very very bad design decision, it's baffling they didn't patch them out, they add nothing to the game, and the #1 most popular mods are always to disable them.

I will never forget how excited I was when I discovered a "no cliff racers" mod for the first time, lol. I'd say "I cannot tell you how much I hate those things", but that's like me and every other person who's played Morrowind.

Oh I'm so happy, seeing and trying to remember cliffracers, I think I've finally forgotten how they sound. The sound was what always got me, knowing they were coming.

I wouldn't say "better," but it sure is quite something.

The first book of the Malazan Book of the Fallen is truly the Dark Souls of fantasy epics. What an impossible book to read if you insist on exposition.
I think inhave them as ebooks
Werent they books that were character focused?

Morrowind has an enemy called Cliff Racers, which are these pterodactyl guys that fly around. They have extremely extremely large aggro ranges. You'll just be walking along the game's peaceful background music changes to combat mode, you have no idea why, and it turns out it's because a Cliff Racer from 30 miles away decided it is going to take a run at you. They're not difficult to defeat, but they're extremely numerous, they spawn everywhere, and they stay aggro even after you've long since run away from them. It's a very very bad design decision, it's baffling they didn't patch them out, they add nothing to the game, and the #1 most popular mods are always to disable them.

The depicted picture is basically an average Morrowind playthrough if you don't disable them*

* may not quite be accurate.

Now I'm wondering if anyone ever modded them into Oblivion or Skyrim.

EDIT: They sure have http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/8579/?

best morrowind strat:
- install no cliff racers mod, because you're not a fucking barbarian
- boot up game, start new game
- make acrobatics and aerobics minor skills
- pick the steed as your sign
- play as female breton (50% resist magika species trait, 40 base speed)
- pick light armor, every other armor class sucks
- immediately get boots of blinding speed (100% blind, fortify speed 200 points)
- equip them (50% resist magika makes it 50% blind)
- ramp up gamma to compensate for remaining screen dimming due to blinding effect
- bam, usain bolt

- run to ghostgate and steal the glass armor, now you have good enough protection to get through entire game (also looks badass)

You should write a guide and submit it to Steam if you haven't already :)

Before everyone goes Euro-crazy, here are some impressions for Broken Age:

The story: You play two characters, alternately by your choice, in Broken Age. Shay is a teenage boy who is coddled and kept safe in a routine, being fed cereal and nutrient paste from what's basically a high chair, and going through "missions" like eating ice cream and being hugged by talking toys made of yarn. He soon feels like a prisoner and yearns for something more. Vella is a teenage girl who's being prepared as a sacrifice to a being called Mog Chothra, who "chooses" young maidens (you know, by eating them,) but Vella wants to fight back and kill the beast rather than appease it. Both Shay and Vella want to break out of society's role for them, and Act 1 really makes it seem like a nice coming-of-age story, but Act 2 takes a much creepier turn. I can see why a lot of people liked Act 1 and disliked Act 2, but overall it's well-told. The ending could have been fleshed out just a wee bit more - I assume Double Fine was banking on a sequel - but it was fine for what it was.

It even contains some good twists and turns, playing on the player's perceptions of what's going on. The characters often express the same ideas you're meant to think, only for them to be revealed as red herrings.

The graphics: Splendid. The characters look memorable and in some cases adorable - I really liked the design of Vella's younger sister, mostly cute with a hint of mischief, as well as the gruff, cynical, badass grandfather - and the environments are worthy of any adventure game. They don't do anything grandiose like some of Daedalic's later features such as the Whispered World or the Night of the Rabbit, but it's still great to look at.

The dialogue and voices: Plenty of celeb cameos in here, including Jack Black, Wil Wheaton and Elijah Wood(!) bring this game to life. And there are also your reliable voice actors such as Jennifer Hale and Jamieson Price (and I'm hip deep in Baader-Meinhoff about him, having heard him in Bravely Second and Disgaea) to round everything out. It's a feast for the ears. They don't skimp on the dialogue either, with lots of unique dialogues for unusual inventory interactions. It's easily the best part of the game.

The puzzles: Yeah, we'd have to get there eventually, huh? Most of the puzzles are good, and some are classic "bullshit adventure logic" puzzles. There's some fourth-wall breakage as Shay and Vella have to draw upon knowledge the other received (or is it handwaved as a psychic link? Who knows?) and some typical "just use everything in your inventory until something works" trial-and-error nonsense. But if you're an old hand at adventure games, this shouldn't come as a shock to you. It doesn't detract from the rest of the game.

The length: The game says I took about 9 hours to finish, Steam says 11. I did a lot of pausing... be all that as it may, it's a decent length for an adventure game, and doesn't overstay its welcome.

The verdict: A singularly fine offering from Double Fine. Is it as good as Grim Fandango? No. Would I have been pleased with it had I backed it? Mmm...probably. Should you play it? Yes.

Great writeup about the game. You should post that in the Point&Click Adventure game thread here on GAF also. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1164171&page=17

The fourth wall puzzles are my only objections about the puzzles in this game, they didn't feel right. Otherwise, I thought the puzzles were great, especially in Act 2. Solved all of them without resorting to a walkthrough.

The dialogues are one of the highlights also, agree with that. There are tons of extra dialogues added, making it worthwhile to go back to old characters just to see them comment on new things. Some of them are the funniest I've seen in any p&c adventure game. :)

Question if I'm getting this error
Error installing iKernel.exe (0x2000)
When trying to install one of my ye olde PC games from disc, what is the way to fix it? I can't install my old copy of BoF4 onto my lappy because of it :/
Anyone?

Tizoc

Have you tried setting the compatibility mode of the installer to an older version of Windows? Assuming BoF4 means Breath of Fire 4, 98/ME or one the XP options might work.
Stil gives me the error if i set the setup.exe file to win 98/me :/

Yea, the designs in VLR are really bad. Especially
what they did with clover

ZTD's designs are a lot improved over that.

Dirt Rally just got Oculus Rift support patch. That's fine, but the patch is 10.2GB just to add VR support that does nothing for 99.9% of the players. Could they have done this as DLC or something?

In other news, I can't update Dirt Rally because I don't have enough disc space for the update.

I can't agree more, with steam enforcing updates, devs should try to make those that aren't necessary in free dlcs, be it languages or VR support

Every time I start up Trails in the Sky SC I get this warm and fuzzy feeling inside.
What kind of dark sorcery does Falcom use to make such amazing games.
Just listen to this and tell me you don't just want to wander the roads forever.

Also, I've completed chapter 1 a while ago (god damn), but instead of moving on I was playing poker and blackjack in the casino..
I now have managed to break free of the gambling addiction and left the casino with 230k medals. And the most expensive thing to buy with them was 1k. Well.

it is a sorcery, Trails is magic, Trails is life

don't wanna spoil it for you, but you probably can guess yourself
that prizes at the casino will bet better with time.

Indeed.

Yep, I figured as much. The casino being available so early and the whole fishing minigame would be pretty awkward otherwise.

Welp, I won Pony Island, got the link for the key to be mailed to me...mail doesn't show up.

Asked for the key to be resent, and they said the mail has been sent...still doesn't show up.

Is there a problem with Outlook right now that I don't know about, or is this a problem with Humble Bundle?

While I do agree that that should be free DLC to allow not installing it, damn not even having 10gb on a drive for games free is cutting it close.

I guess? There definitely are a ton of them. 1/3rd of the way through the first book and it doesn't seem too centered on just one of them, though. What it really feels like is jumping into a D&D campaign that a handful of other people have been playing for several years straight and just trying to learn the world as you go with no explanation.

Lost a hard drive last week so I'm running pretty close to the edge right now. And will be for few months at least, hoping to score a big SSD (preferably 1TB or more) later this year on some random sale.

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
The GC version got shafted and has the least amount of content, so I don't think that's possible. Not sure about PC/Wii though. Edit: And yeah the old PC version is a whole different ballgame vs. the new one.
The original PC version years ago didn't have mouse support or lighting, if that's what you're getting at. I hear the version on Steam now is pretty good.

ah so they fixed all those texture issues and it now has the extra stuff?
