Getting Shadow the Edgehog teas from the environment.
At least with previous entries they tried to deceive us with the first trailers, now it's like they're not even trying to hide how shitty it's going to be.

Using Classic Sonic again is pretty lame. Unless they add Boom Sonic with the open level design from Boom, then it's salvaged. Not really hyped for another mostly 2.5D installment.

Trailer was really cheesy, but if it's really gonna be Generations 2, then the game should be a lot of fun. Hopefully, it'll really be good. I'm not exactly a big fan or anything, but I'd like for Sonic to no longer be a joke in the gaming community and consistently have at least decent games instead of bad ones.

Why are they seriously doing the "dark times" thing? I was expecting the whole trailer for there to be a bit where it went "just kidding!" and turned lighthearted... but it just kept going. :|

Because Eggman/Robotnik is at his best when he's actually menacing

I'm guessing what others here have already said. It's a new game that will let you play as Classic, Modern and Boom Sonic. I'll take it, even though I would have preferred a game where I'm playing as Tails or Knuckles again. I guess that's what Mania is for.

Just like everybody likes their sonics, dark, broody and edgy.

It was bad until classic sonic appeared with a smile.

Same here. Pretty awful trailer. Hope the game doesnt actually swing that way and its just, Sonic Generations 2.

DAT NX LOGO IS TOO SEXY

Come on man, its just the wii font with someone writting NX

What is this IN THIS TIME OF DARKNESS crap.

Sonic Team is such an odd developer. Anyway, this has been in development since late 2013, right? You'd think they'd have a bit more to show.

The way it's shown, maybe the two sonic will be implemented in a coherent experience and not the we don't know what to do of generations.

Generations was shown off in exactly the same manner, so I wouldn't expect anything different.

Which is fine, because Generations was the best Sonic game since the 90s.

The Sonic Adventure series has the best portrayals of Robotnik in my mind, but I don't think Mike Pollock could pull that off. No disrespect to him. He's found his niche with Robotnik, and I'm glad he enjoys himself. I am curious to see where they'll go with him in this game.

To be honest, that vibe of that trailer was the exact opposite of what I wanted, but I doubt that'll be the tone of the entire game. They should know better by now.

I'm sort of glad they're taking a more serious tone this time around. Sonic Colors was pretty good, but I spent a lot of time going "that's a joke I guess" I don't expect sonic to be a tragic character, I'm sure he'll Crack jokes, I'm sure there'll be levity, but it'll be nice to have even a mild investment in the story.

I love how they reference themselves in the beginning. I.e. Let's pretend these weird WiiU games never happened and Generations/Colours is were we left off - good.
It's exactly what we needed, I suspect it has the gameplay from Generations with original worlds. I wouldn't mind if it's a bit slower like Colours though.

Yeah everyone is whining about the edginess and I'm just glad it looks like the writing might not focus on stupid jokes like it has since Colors.

I don't want full grimdark like the series has had in the past but I don't want super light-hearted unfunny jokes either. Give me something in the middle and it's the perfect combination.

Unleashed was a good middle ground so this team is more than capable of it.

The whole concept of having two separate Sonics is still mindbogglingly stupid to me and a testament to Sega's inability to know what to do with its star IP. Imagine that happening with any other franchise and people would just be scratching their heads. 2 Marios? 2 Raymans? 2 Crash Bandicoots? Please.

But at least we got an "NX" thing at the end. Is that a first?

So... Is this something different than Sonic Mania? Why would they reveal two entirely different Sonic games at the same time?

Ones supposed to be for "classic fans" while the other for "modern fans" even have a game for "boom" fans. Although the modern one apparently can't stand on its own and put in classic sonic and probably some 2d stages with it...

What the hell is NX? In the old days we never got trailers with Project Reality, Project Dolphin or Project Revolution logos.

Sooooo... Not Adventure 3?

We got that. It was Sonic 06.

I really don't understand peoples infatuation with wanting another Adventure. It didn't work 3 times in a row, why expect it to ever happen again, especially when they finally found 3D Sonics winning formula.

Nintendo really needs to get on to announcing the damn thing. You shouldn't have devs starting to announce their games before your reveal but its going to happen more and more if they keep dragging their feet.

Bruh, the Sonic universe has always had a dystopian undercurrent.

I know it's fun to shit on Ow the Edge and 2006's awful attempt at seriousness, but at least be somewhat knowledgeable about the franchise.

Pick up the comics once and a while, Eggman almost consistently doesn't fuck around. Sonic and his gang are essentially rebels fighting to topple a tyrannical regime in a period of time where Eggman successfully took over.

Exactly. I think its great we are seeing a time where Eggman is successful.

They could still name it Adventure 3, it's certainly not going to come out as Project Sonic. But that name is meaningless anyway, several games could have been Adventure 3 tonally and from game design perspective.

That's a good point actually, you see that in Sonic CD too.

I think the fear is that if done poorly...man it'll be painful :p

Yeah imagine if there was a Mario made of paper in addition to the original and eventually they teamed up? People would be almost as confused as if there was a baby version of Mario too

The success of others absolutely infuriates me.

Not if that happened in a subseries where crazy stupid shit happens all the time :p

Yep, calling it Adventure 3 is meaningless. Hell, the inclusion of classic Sonic in there automatically makes people associate it with Generations, so we're so far beyond the Adventure games at this point it doesn't even matter.

I'm fearful at this point because the trailer was just... kind of weird. Sonic Mania will likely be good but this I need to see more of. I'm guessing it's gonna be more Generations gameplay with a new story and coat of paint, which I am 100% cool with, so long as they don't do anything weird! When I say that I mean like, put Boom Sonic in there, or have weird friends playable that get in the way of the base gameplay.

We'll see! If I have access to like, 20ish levels where I'm playing 2D and 3D Sonic, I'm in. I'll slog through a bunch of crap to get to them, whatever!

I will say that, it's weird seeing both Modern and Classic designs with this dystopian setting. As much crap as the modern games have had Sonic get into, they really cooled it with the grimdark from Unleashed onwards... for the most part.

Eh, who cares? Really like... ya know, I grew up with Sonic from Adventure 2 onward, ya know? I played Sonic 2 as a kid, but really, I was an Adventure baby with my first foray into the classics beyond playing at my cousins being Mega Collection. I loved the story as a kid, but as an adult I'm willing to admit the ridiculousness of making a dark and layered story with a bunch of colorful anthropomorphic animals. In addition to that, I knew, gameplay-wise, where it was at; the Sonic/Shadow levels. I liked the character dynamics in the story itself, and totally would've been cool to being able to play as, say, Knuckles in Sonic's levels, but I hated the gameplay outside of the speed stages/ If SEGA's attempt to veer away from a story that takes itself too seriously (Somewhat, at least) and allow a full game of nothing but Sonic gameplay is to have two friggin Sonics side by side, who cares? If it's more Generations gameplay wrapped in a weird dystopian package, I'm still in it. Gameplay is what I loved about Sonic from the beginning, and Generations set the bar high for quality Sonic gameplay.

People reacting to the tone of the trailer and thinking this is on the same level of "edge" as Shadow and Sonic 2006 are being ridiculous. It's two of Eggman's Sonic 2 giant Eggbots for crying out loud. This isn't anything on the level of Shadow or '06 where aliens and a military were involved; along with the world coming to an end and having to basically do a reset of time as if nothing ever happened.

This is more similar to SatAM or the Archie comics, heck, even some of the classic Sonics more dystopian levels. This kind of atmosphere has kind of always been around with Sonic.

It's doubtful it'll be the whole game but if it is then it won't, definitely, be anything like Shadow. Good god, please you guys, this trailer alone is 100000x better than the reveal trailer for Shadow. For goodness sake's, Shadow's reveal trailer had Sonic looking like he was going to die. -_-

Classic Sonic might have had more of a surrealistic flair, but there were plenty of dystopian settings to go around.

Scrap Brain Zone, the entirety of Sonic CD's bad future, Chemical Plant/Death Egg/Oil Ocean from 2, and so on.

I hope Sonic 2017's Modern Sonic gameplay doesn't consist of more boosting because I've had enough of that shit (I don't mean that in a derogatory way; it just emphasizes my concern). I'm crossing my fingers that he'll play more like Sonic Adventure-style Sonic because the "boost > quick time event > jump > boost again" gameplay has already worn it's welcome with me.

Unfortunately there's boosting in the CG trailer so it looks like I'm pretty fucked. :-(

The subtlety here is Sonic saving the other, in generations they were just running together, so maybe...

When one considers the disposition of both Sonics during the second half of the trailer - smiling, confident etc - I really don't think there will be an issue with regard to tone.

Plus, as others have pointed out, dystopian worlds are not new for Sonic - and they certainly aren't exclusive to Shadow/2006.
