The first 30 minutes of The Killing Joke is awful. (Spoilers)

The first 28 minutes or so are about Barbara, then the plot of the original comic kicks in. What links those two sections, thematically?

That's the tricky part of it. We deliberately tried to not really link the opening to the Killing Joke part explicitly. There was some discussion about that: Should we try to fold it into the Killing Joke part of the story more? Should we hint at the Joker in the first part? It's kind of an odd structure for a movie. It isn’t one long complete story. It really is two different stories with a break in the middle. We just decided that would be the best way to go with it. I honestly don’t even think of them as being one story. As weird as that may be. We just didn’t go down that route.

"So, 'Poochy' okay with everyone?"

Well I really liked it.. the artstyle was pretty good, it has kevin conroy & mark hamill..

I havent read any batman comics but I loved Batman TAS when I was younger, my only other connection are the Arkham games which I also love.

Going by a google search of this thing, media coverage of this movie is pretty much solely highlighting how much of a disaster it is so far, right down to its SDCC panel.

Gotta hand it to DC, they are consistent when it comes to Barbara-related shit storms. 30 years later and they're still finding ways to wreck the character.

This movie is weird. Like why did batman do that? Batman has restraint but he was like nope,
I need my dick wet.

He cares deeply for Barbara, but I thought Bruce always was a womanizer?

Even though thats just for show, I never thought he didnt enjoy sleeping with women.

Yes he fucked up tho.

It's so the audience can relate to batman. Cause in the end of the day no one cares about the cool detective stuff, the villians or gotham lore. The fans just want to know if batman gets laid.

Ya but they kept hinting that he's like a father figure also at this point he's gotta be like in 30s or 40s and she's in her 20s

Mark and Kevin are at the top of their game. The only gripe I have with it, was they really should have built up Batman's fears for Batgirl when he was telling her not to let the criminal get attached and how it can become unhealthy. Really could have shown that he has learned that from past experience with the Joker. Batman kinda just off hand mentions its twice and its forgotten, other then that the movie is fantastic, loved it,

Yeah he fucked up, but he probably does have real emotions for her.

Besides the age difference I think its possible that he would engage in a physical relationship with her, once, and then realizing it is a mistake.

I mean Im not condoning it but thats just what Id like to think.

What I got from it in the movie is that Barbara wanted Batman to see her as an equal. She doesnt 'use' sex to get her way at all, but she wants to be on his level. I think she wants to be very close to him, something that Batman cannot allow himself.

He gives in to temptation by having sex with her, but quickly becomes distant, realizing his mistake.

I actually read the Killing Joke not that long ago and I enjoyed it. But I haven't really read all that much batman or comics in general. What should I read instead? I like batman. I also read the frank miller books and liked them and my brother thinks I'm crazy for it.

Y'all gotta realize Batman is a pretty sleazy and immoral dude. I wonder if this is because society has finally caught on how awful he is and now there's finally backlash.

I was recently playing Arkham Knight and pretty much came to realize this. Bruce Wayne is kind of a scumbag.

Batman is a giant Dick.

That's part of his character. Barbara fucking him to show him she's all grown up is Asuka Langley levels of childish and OOC.

Reading this quote from Bruce Timm.

“There’s clearly an unstated attraction between the two of the characters from the very beginning and I think it’s there in the comics. If you go back and look at the Adam West show, its’ there in the Adam West show,” said Timm. “It’s subtle, but to me it’s always been there.”

All makes sense to me now. The guy had an OTP that nobody else saw and made it real once he started working for the company.

Superman's parents about to conceive and send him off of Krypton through some DNA thumbprint thing before Zod kills them both and implants his own DNA, sending off some extremely rape-y vibes.

By pressing his thumb on a screen? Come on, that's stretching the meaning of the word a lot.

That's all it is. He's been the only one to push that coupling, and for god knows what reason, the team that did the Batman Beyond comic series pushed it even further.

I really wonder what Tara Strong's opinion is in all this. That DC All Access interview when she's talking about all the people that love Batgirl and how she's humbled by that, I wonder if she gets how pissed a big part of the fan base is right now.

If I liked the Nolan movies (with the exception of TDKR), but never saw any of the animated show as a kid, would I like any of the animated films? If so, what are worth watching if this one is bad?

These are all good and are standalone stories:

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Batman: Subzero
The Dark Knight Returns Parts 1 and 2
Batman: Under the Red Hood

Watch the animated series, it's better than the animated movies, and probably the best version of Batman.

Sounds alright to me. I'm far from one of the people who is against "shipping" of female heroes. And i wasn't expecting a 1:1 adaption of the Killing Joke either.

I already bought tickets for a co-worker and I for 7:30pm on monday. Looking forward to it!

Batman The Long Halloween is the gold standard of Batman books IMO.

Creepy as fuck.

In 2016 they managed to make Barbara Gordon's treatment in the Killing Joke like 10 times worse. It's oddly impressive

Boy that's out there! What the hell! I feel like the Killing Joke had more than enough material.

I love the concept of the writer for this movie climbing up the ranks slowly but surely, and finally getting a chance to somehow canonize his OTP.

Is it just me or did batgirls boobs look to big. Fighting crime with a solid D would be tough.

Really dispointed by the movie, I'm not a fan of the killing joke but I love batgirl year one so I watched this. Wish they just took batgirl year one and made it into a film and made this and just released them on one dvd not smash two stories together.

I thought the animation would be my issue with this movie.
It was the only thing I could deal with.
The story in the first half is shit. They ruined Batgirl. I hope you guys give her a second chance, she's one of the best. Please read/watch Bat Girl Year One.
The actual second part of the movie, is alright for an adaptation of the killing joke. But what came before it will take you out of the mood completely. Didn't even finish watching it.

Damn, you got me excited for a second there thinking that there was a Batgirl Year One adaptation that passed me by.

Opinions and all but I just got done watching it and it was perfect. Loved the intro with Hamill and everything was just a perfect adaptation outside of the sex scene which was just brief really. Love the DC animation and if this is the future I'm keen.

Just got back from the Cinema here in Sydney, i loved it, the interview with Mark was great. I didn't need the Batgirl part but my 15 year old daughter who's only exposure to DC is Arrowverse, movies and the odd Harley Quinn comic really enjoyed the Batgirl part, she wouldn't have had a clue who Barbara was otherwise. I can see why they did it, and I do think it was necessary, it could have been done better I guess. It was funny at the end when
Babs becomes Oracle
and my Daughter went
"Felicity Smoak!".
