Yeah, when I was playing some of Metroid 2 on my 3DS years ago, I didn't have any problems with how it played. I keep trying to get into Metroid 1, but it's just a bit too hard for me from the start. I should really just use a guide for it for my first full playthrough.Agreed. It's pretty interesting, quite a few series conventions (both mechanically and aesthetically) originated from Metroid II. Off the top of my head:
- Save Stations
- Aiming downward
- Crouching
- The Spazer & Plazma Beams
- The Spider & Spring Ball
- Energy & Missile Refill points
- Samus' ship & the (now iconic) Varia Suit design
- The item fanfare
It's almost like a proto-Super Metroid in those regards. Whereas I'd probably recommend Zero Mission over the original to a newcomer (Even considering I personally prefer the NES version), I'd say Metroid II is worth a fair shake, at the very least.
Literally the only thing I wish OG Metroid 2 had was a map. I wasn't playing the game consistently enough to learn the map as I went, and I wasn't drawing one, so I would get completely lost when I played it. Only got an hour or two in, so I'm pretty excited just to do a full playthrough with this remake.
Maybe once I finish the remake I'll go back to the original if the map is the same.
