Another Metroid 2 Remake (Project AM2R) |OT| Best Birthday Ever!

Just got bodied by my first Zeta Metroid. This game is incredible

It's pretty much Zero Mission 2, but without compromising anything I liked about the original.

Agreed. It's pretty interesting, quite a few series conventions (both mechanically and aesthetically) originated from Metroid II. Off the top of my head:

- Save Stations
- Aiming downward
- Crouching
- The Spazer & Plazma Beams
- The Spider & Spring Ball
- Energy & Missile Refill points
- Samus' ship & the (now iconic) Varia Suit design
- The item fanfare

It's almost like a proto-Super Metroid in those regards. Whereas I'd probably recommend Zero Mission over the original to a newcomer (Even considering I personally prefer the NES version), I'd say Metroid II is worth a fair shake, at the very least.

I've never played Metroid 2 in fear that i would dislike it as much as the original NES game. Sort of interesting that back in the day Nintendo did a whole lot of new interesting things with another gameboy entry in a beloved series with Link's Awakening.

Space Jump at least. "Flying" with bombs was starting to get old.

That flying chozo statue caught me off-guard, fun fight flying and shooting everywhere like a madman.

I made 2 custom Steam Banners to those who want to have the game in their library, one with the final logo, and one with the unused logo that used the Metroid 2 logo as a base.

Thanks, love the second one.

Also the missiles selection making a visible change to Samus' cannon. That eventually lead to one of my favorite FPS animations in a game with how that change was reflected in Metroid Prime.

Finally got Space Jump and Speed Booster.

Some of the rooms you get to use the Speed Booster in are pretty interesting.

Hm....I think I'm stuck. I'm in this tower that has grey doors (not the kind that usually look blue/green/red/etc), and there doesn't seem to be a way out other than power bombs, which I don't have.

I got this

1. because of my love for metroid
2. because i've actually never played metroid 2 (or other M)
3. because nintendo refuses to feed the metroid fanbase.

thank God this came out.

If it's the area I think,
Bomb the wall on the far left.

Those on Linux not willing to wait for the announced port, the game runs perfectly fine using Wine (1.9.15 here) so far (I suppose this may be true for Mac people as well).

Let's give credit where credit is due.

I am not the only person in the thread that said this, nor was I the first. Based on the posts on the official website it was implied only one guy did all of the programing, art, and music behind the game.

This game is shockingly faithful to the original. Zero Mission took a lot more liberties in its remake, probably since the original Metroid aged much worse than II, but I played a TON of Metroid II back in the day and this is nearly identical in layout. Obviously the items are different, Charge is where Ice used to be, Speed Booster, Supers were added, etc., but it did a really nice job bringing back in the old. The new stuff might be my favorite, though, like the new Torizo boss and the logs.

It's a little too bad that the music is all remixes of Metroid tunes, like Brinatar in Area 2, Great Temple in Area 3, and Chykka for Torizo, but they are good remixes, and way better than the OG's bleeps and bloops!

Best part is that it's in color now. I always thought the big pillars at the bottom of Area 3 were pipes, but I guess they're thick vines! Makes more sense that way. I just made it to Area 4 (with the Zetas). This is certainly way better than anything Nintendo's done for Metroid in the 2010s.

The guys with the 8bitdo snes pads, who are you getting it to be detected by the game, for whatever reason the game does seem to detect my pad??

My fault, I meant the right. There's a tunnel that's barely visible there.

Right, but where are you referring to? If you drop down from the next room, you can only either power bomb or see a non-functioning door.

BTW: got power bombs now, so i should be good.

Got myself a steak, cheese, and mushroom sub along with some cheesy bread. Also got all my chores done, going to dedicate the rest of the day to playing some Metroid II and pigging out. Gonna be one hell of a lazy day!

I just figured out you can suck in health orbs via your charge shot. No longer shall they be just out of jumping reach!

Ah, my wonderful Hori pad doesn't work with the game:
Buttons work, but the D-pad does nothing.
Anybody else tried it with this controller ?

Anyway, the game looks incredible. I beat Metroid 2 fifteen years ago and I kinda liked it, but not much. I've wanted a remake ever since and it seems this one delivers.

Got Sweetfx working to add scanlines, for those of you who want them. Enable the USE_ADVANCED_CRT section and scroll down and play with the settings. I would turn off all curvature and stuff until you get the picture where you need it, or if you are on a crt just leave all that off except for scanlines (I am running in VGA right now , not CGA).

All I did was turn mine on by pressing Start, synced it with my laptop, then loaded the game and it worked just fine.

Absolutely loving it. I've been playing it for about ninety minutes now.

The creator has managed to capture the feeling of the original Metroid 2, with improvements that are sensible, carefully considered, and far from gratituous. There is an enormous respect to the source material here. The inclusion of scanning - with some brilliant lore entries - is the icing on the cake.

Having an absolute blast! I couldn't think of a happier way to spend Metroid's 30th Anniversary.

Reached Plasma Beam and decided to stop there for the night (it's like 00:20 now) but damn if this ain't good. I had a little trouble with the controls as I speedrun Zero Mission so I was trying to control it like that, but once I got used to it.... the glorious-ness.

I streamed it here if anyone is interested. Gonna stream again and finish it tomorrow I think.

Some early thoughts

- I don't like the sound mixing. It feels off, but I can't put my finger on it just yet.

- Not a fan of the intro art for Samus. It looks like she has stubby arms.

- I like that using the Charge Beam to bring in items was incorporated

- It feels good to play, but still feels a bit stiff to move around

- I like the Save Points, but I can't figure out what the symbol on them are.

That's all I can say right now, but I'm pretty positive on this game right now. Some things I want to figure out first before I judge.

Regarding Save Points: It's a Chozo head.

Played this for a half hour and man, it feels so good. The controls are ripped right out of the GBA Metroid's, the visuals look great, the music has a very Prime-like feel and I love all the little features (button to use morph ball, logs for some locations you visit, radar options for the Metroids, strafing feature with R, ect).

Such a well done remake of a Game Boy Classic and I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate Metroid's big 30th anniversary :).

Nice to see an OT for that, and to see everyone loving it!

Woah, this must be amazing to play it like this!

If you look at your map, you'll notice near the Golden Temple in that huge open cavern (the most northwestern part of the map in the early game) where you can peak through the background to see the outside of the caverns, it has quite a high ceiling to be sure. If you can dodge flying robots and rock bats using the Spider Ball by climbing up the cavern walls to the ceiling, a special surprise is waiting for you.

It's the huge light blue room above all the green lit tunnels on the map.

Man this game is thoroughly impressive. I never really played the original, but this is a great way to experience it anyway.

Been playing for 2,5 hours straight, but now I'm stuck and a bit tired. Will continue later.

I am LOVING this so far. Samus just moves so smoothly. I'm playing with a Gamecube controller btw.

My only complaints so far are:
>Too many save points
>Missile expansions are too close to each other imo
>Overall pretty easy

Here's my current progress.

Now, there are two rooms so far that I haven't been able to go through with wall jumping and the Spider Ball.

Any tips on clearing them, or do I have to come back to them once I have the Space Jump?

how do you shinespark forward? I can get it to go up, but not horizontally.

EDIT: nvm, got it

EDIT2: Man, I love all the new areas. I'm going for speed, but I also want 100%!

I have some nitpicks, but overall pretty great game.
Already beat the second boss and got the
bombs, charge beam and spider ball, that i find pretty OP (did a puzzle that needed the spider ball by bomb jumping, like in the old days lol)
Powerups and missile expansions feel to near each other (like, there was 4 missile expansions, one behind the other), but I suppose the original game was the same.

My nitpicks are more with the controls, I love Zero Mission, and Samus being fast, but holy shit id the xbox controller pad insnt a big piece of shit. Had to make the deadzone of the joystick feel like a pad for it to work well, and its still not optimal. Also had to fiddle with the controls until I could make them feel similar to Zero Mission (who the hell thought it was a good idea changing between missiles and beam using B instead of the shoulder button).

The worst part of all is hitting jump in the air does the spark charge, even when you dont have it, I seem to remember (maybe Im wrong) older metroids didnt have that and you actually need to press right or left to start that animation. Its pretty bad because it stops me of jumping fast and shotting at the same time with my thumb in the two buttons.

That and the music for picking powerups, not my cup of tea that remix.

I also think theres a bug with the save stations, were the sound starts, and then the animation (that makes saving twice as long), intead of at the same time. Pretty sure I saw (only once) do it correctly in one of the save stations.

Plays on normal, says it's easy, asks for help. :p

Come back to those rooms later.

Does anyone know how to get that item right above Samus
(in the room with sand where we fight a gamma Metroid, it needs shinespark)

http://imgur.com/a/f5bXC

I can get the boost for the shinespark down there, but the room right below the item has a platform that isn't destroyed with the shinespark, and if I jump on top of it, I lose the ability to charge the shinespark...

Alright everything works fine now with Xpadder, I've played for a bit and I'm blown away. I feel like I'm playing a "real", new Metroid. Like a proper sequel to Metroid Zero Mission.
I want to send flowers to the guy who made this.
