Tekken 7 Dev on X1 & PS4 Cross-Play "Please ask Sony"

Gonna quote myself:

It's so fucking sad to see regular users defending an anti-consumer instance or getting defensive because this will somehow benefit Microsoft. They shouldn't care about this, only about what is better for them and for other players, which is breaking down the walls between platforms.

Let's hope Sony is not as narrow minded as some people here.

Console warriors, man....

Microsoft blocks crossplay = Microsoft is the bad guy!
Sony blocks crossplay = eh, whatever, we do not need it... #4theplayers!

Makes sense. But not really.

Agreed, it doesn't really make sense to just make up shit like you're doing.

Microsoft finally opened things up after over a decade of blocking it, maybe give Sony more than a couple of months to try and figure out how it would work.

Though having said that, I seriously doubt Bandai Namco would even bother with it anyway.

I can't blame Sony for not doing this. It would be nice, but it would benefit their competition more than it would benefit them.

Again - how is it beneficial to PS4 players to not even have the option? Of course it's not going to give you access to the full set of features available within one platform, but there's plenty of workarounds for things like private voice chat rooms.

I didn't advocate for not having the option. I simply explained that it's not really anything more then a bigger user base.

I have friends on XB1 I'd like to play with. Even if Sony approved, I have no expectations on actually being able to enjoy gaming with them due to all the things that would require.

Wasn't Final Fantasy XIV able to go to Xbox One and Sony wouldn't have cared, but Microsoft would not allow cross-platform play yet? I remember reading some quote that SE was interested in bringing it to Xbox One, but because all platforms are connected, they couldn't get MS to go along with it.

MS wanted their own version of FFXIV, that was closed off to the platform, IIRC. This was before they 180'd on cross play though.

Hard to say what exactly Sony would have done back then if MS was open to the idea though. It's just talk until something happens.

Sony are not gonna do it and take away an advantage of their market share. There are going to be far more players on PS4 anyway.

They might acquire PC crossplay however.

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
Whoever is winning wont be open to the idea, whoever is losing will be open so it will help them.

It just so happened MS was winning most of last gen while it switched back to Sony this gen. I wish it would happen, but I really doubt it.

Bullshit, devs always need to get permission. There are tons of guidelines for online and branding. Both Sony and Microsoft have guidelines strictly saying that the game cannot contain branding from its competitors.

You can bet that all three console makers will make sure they don't see competitor branding in this game for this feature if it even happens.

Um, Microsoft went on the record at GDC. Look it up rather than get so territorial about this

Seriously, and I'm a PS4 only player.

Crossplay between consoles is better for everyone, and we should push it more.

The truth is, not many people care about playing outside of their closed ecosystem anyway. So it generally matters little. When PC crossplay comes along for certain titles on PS3/4, its usually a nice bonus and nothing more.

In general, while it would be nice to play with users on a rival ecosystem(aka Xbox), i can understand why Sony would not do it, and generally don't care about it myself enough to petition since the userbase is going to be biggest on the platform i play on anyways.

Yeah its selfish, but i just can't muster up any real genuine righteous indignation about a feature i don't really have much feelings on either way.

We've never had Xbox players play with Sony players in any real capacity before, and i can't really see it as a feature i should be jumping up and down for.

Won't ever happen.
As long as PlayStation is in the lead, it makes no financial sense for them to open up their larger userbase for xbox to touch.

Given most PS4 owners use its utter toilet, 56K quality WiFi connection, be careful what you wish for.

Yep. Look on the bright side, Sony doesn't even have the competency to put 5GHZ wifi into their units, Xbox players would get totally cheated with Sony's complete lack of interest in a quality online experience.

If cross-play was implemented, you'd think it would be mostly be on games with dedicated servers. In which scenario, what does it matter?

I don't understand why people are talking about Sony won't benefit from this or MS will only see benefit from crossplay(??)

It will benefit two groups - The Dev/Publisher and the Players (bigger player pool/faster match making)

Xbox Live / PSN wll never have cross functionality, so no policy needs to be discussed. The only policy to be discussed is what the Dev has to follow.

The Dev would have to implement on their servers/game the chat feature/message which is independent to Xbox Live/PSN.

After all, what's really being streamed between player and server are inputs, the server will be configured to allowed Xbox vs PS4 player (and PC).

It'll never happen. The network effect of console ownership is a huge reason why people choose one over the other. As long as Sony has a market advantage, they are burning money by opening up console cross-ply.

What does Sony have to gain?

Microsoft is the one with half the market share

Exactly.

As much as it would be cool, I really doubt Sony would like to have Microsoft piggybacking off their huge playerbase.

Microsoft are welcoming this because they need it far far more than Sony - where was this talk when Xbox 360 was the leader? Surely it could've been done back then just as easy as now?

May I ask the reasoning behind this line of thinking?

What do Sony/MS gain/lose?

If ive bought Rocket League on Xbox One. I've already bought it. What is Sony or MS losing or gaining by allowing cross play? If anything it KEEPS people with Sony.

My brother is starting to sway towards buying RL on Xbox One because all his relatives have it on Xbox One. As soon as he heard about this, he cancelled any plans to buy on Xbox. So It kept him as a Sony Rocket League player.

They never said PS4 specifically.

Say whattttt?

Chris Charla said:
Cross-Network Play
First, in addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we’re enabling developers to support cross-network play as well. This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks.

Of course, it’s up to game developers to support this feature, and Xbox Live players will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players. We’re thrilled to confirm that Psyonix’s Rocket League will be one of the first games to take advantage of this new capability by enabling cross-network play between Xbox One and PC players, with an open invitation for other networks to participate as well.

So yes. They were really clear on that.

What bullshit lol. How does MS gain everything exactly there is nothing monetary involved for them and I am pretty sure even though Xbox is way below PS in terms of userbase it still has a large playerbase.
Lets say you're thinking about buying a new console and all your friends have a PS4, to play with them you'd have to buy a PS4 and get a PSN subscription. However if cross play became a thing you could just get a Xbox One instead (which is cheaper at the moment) and still play with them on there for all third party games at least.

This would be a far less likely scenario than the one I posted above. Which would advantage Sony. If someone has all their friends with a PS4, they'll buy a PS4.

In the case doesn't sound like they have any current plans for cross-play unlike Gwent and RL but they are still waiting for green light from Sony before they try anything.

Given what Pysonix have said about this I still feel it's only a matter of time until they get the green light either way if we don't hear anything by the end of the year than I think we will know Sony's stance will be PC/PS crossplay is ok outside that isn't.
Microsoft opened up Xbox Live for all developers to create a cross play environment this year. No permission needed other than build it into your game.
Being "Open" to the idea of cross play doesn't means they will allow anything without meeting requirements. Just building it into your game is not the only thing devs/pubs have to do. They will have to talk to all platform holders when implementing cross-play meaning because of legal/policy requirements.

Quoting myself this is how things are -

This. People need to stop thinking in corporate interests and start thinking in their own.

Yup, there is literally no drawback as an end user. You only get benefits like having a bigger player pool or being able to play with friends that might not have the same console as you do.

Sony gains a larger pool of players online and a happy user base.

How does a better online experience not help Sony?

Sadly, if Sony allows this it could be perceived as giving advantage to MS. MS is in more badly need for something like this.

But hopefully it will happen one day.
In need? All top games on X1 will have a healthy base for for users to play against, no one will have issues finding games. They're not in need of it but would obviously enjoy access to more users who maybe better suited to be paired with then what the their systems try to match. Not in need of it though, XBL isn't a barren network, not at all.

I'd like MS to open up cross play between 360/X1 if possible. That would be great

This is pro-consumer that MS are pushing. Sony can't be defended from that angle. Sonys previous cross play seems to be selective, where MS have opened up all games in the future to allow this feature, much stronger commitment for gamers and developers.

The thing is dev/pubs will have to implement a party system within their game and I don't see that being a common thing in cross play games because of the extra work needed for it so I don't see those scenarios being common as already mentioned things like larger playerbase benefits everyone including Sony/MS.

Hopefully we get an answer from Sony soon. I think are just looking into the net code and protocol making sure they don't open up their system making it vulnerable.
I really hope they don't go back on their word on being open to cross platform play.

Blame Microsoft for not being honourable and speaking to Sony before announcing they were removing the restriction...

Which numbnuts on here was it that said that in the last thread? lol

I'd like MS to open up cross play between 360/X1 if possible. That would be great

I would assume that restriction also no longer exists. There aren't any new cross-gen games to support it on their books, though. You would think EA would be all over that for FIFA, though. Depends on what the third parties want (probably to get people over to the current gen).

I'm thinking people that bought an X1 that have friends on ps4 that were contemplating making the switch by buying the ps4 and whatever game of interest said group of friends play, now this person just buys game on X1, staying in microsoft's Eco system.
