A polite discourse amongst friends on the importance of MP-elements in No Man's Sky

:( Well, I found this last night case anyone missed it.

“Just to be clear, it's not just going to run a video of me saying, ‘Hi, welcome to the center of the galaxy.’ I can confirm it's not going to be a link to a YouTube video. Inside a box.”

Murray says that players will want to share the experience with their friends, even though the team is trying to temper players’ multiplayer expectations. “Are you gonna want your friends to join you there? Yeah, without giving too much away, yes.”

Edit: Yup, found the source. It's from a GamInformer interview.

So he said that you would want your friends to be with you at the center... That's really heavily implying multiplayer. I mean, what else could that possibly mean. I can't imagine anyone taking that to mean anything other than hanging with your friends at the center in an epic moment.

There is no news from the developer, so anything they write is them making their own conclusions. Which could very well be wrong then.
Yeah, they misinterpreted Murray's latest tweets (at the time).

But those tweets were worded very deliberate so that the chance of misinterpretation was pretty high. Even many user here did so.

Here is me trying to convince Mango Madness that the tweets do not relate to each other:

No really, Murray already responded to the controversy on his twitter. Attributed the two players not seeing each other to server issues caused by too many people playing at the same time. What more do you want?

...

No he didn't. Not at all. Those tweets were completely independent. That's just what some interpreted into them.
I agree that there is no multiplayer on August 11th, 2016. According to Murray it's due to server issues. I don't know if he's telling the truth. My point is that he already gave an explanation, so I'm not sure what else people are waiting for.
Again: Murray did not give an explanation.
Yes, he did. Can you not read?

Can you? The tweets were completely unrelated.
Wrong:

"Two players finding each other on a stream in the first day - that has blown my mind. We added a 'scan for other players' in the Galactic Map to try to encourage this happening. We wanted it to happen - but the first day?

We want people to be aware they are in a shared universe. We added online features, and some Easter Eggs to create cool moments. We hope to see those happening... but too many of you are playing right now. More than we could have predicted. It is a testament to how amazing our network coders are that Discoveries are still working at all."

His explanation is server overload. I'd love to hear how this explanation is "completely unrelated".
"Cool moments"... "Easter Eggs" ... "online features". I'm sorry, but you are being fooled by obtuse language.

I almost feel for guys like you a bit because you are about to find out.

We've been over that dozens of times in this thread. It's okay. Many others fell for it, even media outlets such as IGN interpreted it that way.

Find out what? Be clearer if you have a coherent argument. Explain to me how "server overload" is not an explanation for the two players not seeing each other.

And just to be very clear, because you seem to be confused: I am not claiming Murray is being honest. I am claiming that Murray gave an explanation. Do you disagree with said claim?

This explanation was not related to that specific "meeting". And he never even acknowledged that the two couldn't see each other - even when people pressed him about it. So in his view, this might as well have been a successful meeting of two players.

What I think this series of tweets was is another example of deliberately obtuse messaging - making people think that server issues are the reason for players not seeing each other but not outright saying it. He uses these vague statements because sometime after the PC version is out, he will have to clarify that you can never see other players in NMS. Bet on it.

... this goes on for a while and he stands by his interpretation. Just as many other in this thread alone.

Obviously we can't know for certain, but is it possible IGN (et al) reached out to Hello for confirmation and Hello said (in confidence to IGN et al) that players can do this but that it's down to network issues?
They cited these exact tweets as their source.

You've done it to me, too, and it wasn't 'indirect'.

Calm down.
If it was also "fucking lol", then that's no real swear. But apologies if you took it that way.

I think it merits mentioning in a review something like "Early previews suggested an online component of the game beyond the uploading of discoveries, but those features do not appear to have made the cut" until and unless there's clarification. But honestly, I don't think anything more than that is warranted.

People (including enthusiasts posting on GAF, reddit, etc) should maybe stop buying shit based on previews and instead wait for an actual release. Plenty of consumers already do that.

I feel like it's just a little silly that we get so invested in a thing prior to release that the simplicity of it being marketed and sold as a single player game with nary a mention of MP seems to fall on deaf ears.

Maybe something changed, maybe it didn't. Maybe there's more to it than we know, or maybe not. But the actual game is out, and none of its release promotion calls it an MP game or suggests players should see it as such, even ignoring stuff on Twitter.

I'd like an answer too, but I just don't see the merit in the consumer outrage being fanned here and elsewhere when the product actually being sold thus far does not appear to have made any false claims about its content.
But the game is out and it is still unknown. If I buy it now based on reviews and more, I still wouldn't know if it was in the game or not. And that shouldn't be the case.

"in gamergate"? What does the preposition mean here. "with gamergate", like on gamergate's side? What does he stand for?

I paid no attention to gamergate at the time, as that shit is poison, but his wiki page says he was one of the "But it's about ethics in game journalism!" people. When it very obviously wasn't.

So all the below is false?

Ok, I also found this quote on steam supposedly by Sean. Can anybody confirm it's validity?

“Just to be clear, it's not just going to run a video of me saying, ‘Hi, welcome to the center of the galaxy.’ I can confirm it's not going to be a link to a YouTube video. Inside a box.”

Here are a few snippets of some sweet little lies:

“when you're on a planet, you can see as far as the curvature of that planet. If you walked for years, you could walk all the way around it, arriving back exactly where you started. Our day to night cycle is happening because the planet is rotating on its axis as it spins around the sun. There is real physics to that.

Creatures on a distant planet that nobody has ever visited are drinking from a watering hole or falling asleep because they’re following a formula that determines where they go and what they do; we just don’t run the formula for a place until we get there.”

“Certain animals have an affinity for some objects over others which is part of giving them personality and individual style. They have friends and best friends too. It's just a label on a bit of code—but another creature of the same type nearby is potentially their friend. They ask their friends telepathically where they’re going so they can coordinate.”

Artistic director Grant Duncan recalled roaming an alien planet once shooting at birds out of boredom. “I hit one and it fell into the ocean,” he recalled. “It was floating there on the waves when suddenly, a shark came up and ate it. The first time it happened, it totally blew me away.”

“When you die, you regenerate in the same location,” Murray explained, “but you do lose a great deal of things. We wanted the loss to be meaningful—for you to know that if you make a decision, it has significance.”

It shrunk and he sounded positive, but he stopped short of saying whether it was still considered terminal or not (as far as i'm aware). Sounded good though.

I reach the center of the universe. It's bright here. Very bright. "Is this a star?" I ask myself. No, that's impossible. Quite literally in this game. Also, why would I want to be on a star? I'd burn up.

Anyway, I get out of my ship.

I spot a twinkle on the horizon and walk towards it. I see someone walking towards me at the same speed.

This is it! This is the moment. The surprise at the center of the universe is another player!? I've found a friend! He was telling the truth this whole time!

As I reach the figure, my mouth falls open in shock. This is not another player, Im just looking into a mirror.

But I know this person.
It's Sean Murray.
His shit-eating grin plastered on my own face.

We are the liars. We've been the liars this whole time.

I swallow deeply and slowly tilt the camera down. I fear what I expect to see. I pan down the body of this fraud to reveal:

Beard...

Flannel shirt...

Jeans...

Barefoot.

I drop the controller.

"I can't do this anymore, Sean. I'm sorry. There aren't any sharks eating birds, by the way."

How are "your friends" supposed to be "with you at the center" if the center
Is just a button you press on the galaxy map that then warps you to the next galaxy while some music plays

I think the idea was that you're more likely to see people near the center as a region, because it is the only true common point on the map everyone shares, so more people will be physically near it and are more likely to meet

I think the rational, non-deceptive wording would be
"let's start New Game+ together"
.

Hmmm, *rests chin on hand* in a way, aren't we all just barefoot sharks, in flannel and jeans, eating birds? I think this is the important lesson Sean is trying to teach us.

But the game doesn't have true "regions", every system is boxed off, you can't roam freely in space.

Not sure if it has been reported here but over at reddit someone mentioned there had already been 4 instances of people meeting up and all of them unable to see each other...
Also quite surprising that in less than week already 4 times people were able to find each other so easily... Wasn't it supposed to be almost zero chance? Is the galaxy actually smaller than initially proposed?

I'm hoping the Steam version has better networking.

It's not using PSN, so that's already a plus.

My new video card comes soon so I can't wait. Love space games but I fear the game will be a buggy mess for awhile online as everyone tries to find each other at the center of the universe, all at the same time.

Universe is big, but chances people are in the same area are there. Some earlier in this thread pointed towards the Birthday problem for an explanation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birthday_problem

GAF likes to pretend that it's not true but, before Gamergate became a full hate machine there were real concerns about ethics in game journalism, if only for a few days. As a result of those concerns, some gaming outlets changed their policies regarding disclosure, Kotaku was one of them and they had a long chat with Totalbiscuit back then when they announced they'd always disclosure when one of their people may have a conflict of interest in the articles they publish. I'm on my phone so I can't post it but since some of you are watching his channel you may find that chat between Titalbiscuit and Steven Totilo there.

Way, way before gamergate there was, yes. Many people started questioning the gifts that journalists would receive with games and their invites to events, where the only cost was their opinion. It took place here a lot. This seems irrelevant to the hounding of various women in the industry that was gamergates trademark though.

It was all total bullshit and never about journalism ethics. It started because of a revenge post against a woman and the majority of the campaign is about taking women down a peg and hurting others

Tell me again that this isn't extremely reminiscent of this kinda stuff:

"Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Yo, how's it goin? Good? I've been good, oh and thanks for that raise my wife got... Sweet, well I have a favor to ask. Heavenly father, if it isn't too much trouble, could you please not let this thread turn into a GG thread? Mkay thanks later!"

If people are able to tell each other where they are they can travel to that particular 'solar system' (i still find the skybox thing ridiculous). If you were not able to tell a friend where you are it would be pretty much impossible finding someone.

The ethics part was not irrelevant, it just was quickly drowned by the misogyny and hate. But more importantly, TB was involved in the former part.

Anyway, good to hear he is doing better. I do not always agree with him but he is one of the good ones and an important voice for the industry.
