Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Do you know what sarcasm is?
I cant tell which post is serious or sarcasm anymore, because the people defending him has been way too ridiculous.
Do you know what sarcasm is?
Multiplayer would just detract from the true experience. This game is about being alone in space with infinite possibilities, it's in the name of the game! Did no one even read the title? If you buy a game called Mario, you expect a game called Mario. It's not Sean's fault if you couldn't read the title.
Having other players in the game would be a distraction. How are you supposed to enjoy understanding the plight of a billion subspecies of space fauna when your friend is there trying to understand you? Do you honestly expect you and your friends to get together and notice the patterns of emergent AI in the billions of localized animal species and the implications that has on our human experience? This game is at risk of losing its transcendence and people are too busy trying to chase outrage culture to understand the implications this has on our generation's creatives.
He did, it's been posted multiple times in multiple threads.
This thread has honestly been more entertaining than a lot of games I've played this year.No Man's Sky seem to be one of those rare games where even if you didn't end up buying it, your still guaranteed hours upon hours worth of entertainment.
This is exactly what my friends and me planned on doing, I mean even just flying with each other would have been good enough, that's all we ever wanted :/
And without multiplayer we also won't have the inevitable No Man's Sky love-stories where two lone people meet in the endless universe by pure chance and accident as if it were fate, fighting against Crackachu's and then they ultimately becoming a couple and marrying
BRAVO SIR! Fucking first rate sarcasm here.
On topic, this stinks of Sony BS. Murray talked of MP elements, griefing, meeting up with other players, etc plenty leading up to launch.
Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen have implemented MP features with no issues. I think Murray likely has as well, but Sony is making him keep silent due to their networking issues.
It's either that or Murray is a fucking liar and that's just depressing. A mind like his comes along once in a generation. Who else could have gotten a colossal project like NMS off the ground and onto consoles?
Oh wow.
This is very reminiscent of the Driveclub launch.
Really? How so? (Curious, didn't follow Driveclub closely)
I hope Sean is getting actual support from Sony. Probably not good on the mental health side of things to pour yourself fully into something and end up with this shit show. While it all seems shady to me to not have an answer before the game launches on PC, I hope it's not because Sony told him he couldn't talk about it but because, behind the scenes, they have people working with him either on a fix or starting to hand off PR/media/social media handling.
Everyone still needs answers but hoping this isn't destroying a pretty cool human.
It's not. Driveclub had severe server issues. NMS has no servers.
If it's any consolation I think there's a really, really high chance they'll try to patch in a multiplayer function considering the backlash about this. They have already confirmed they're patching in entire game mechanics.
The developer wanted way too much to say as little about the game as possible... to the point that it has created a lot of confusion and mis-conception. If people are expecting a multiplayer experience of any form, other than uploading/downloading names of things from a server, they are in for a harsh surprise.
Journey PS4 - "Online Play (Optional)"
Dark Souls 3 PS4 - "1 Player / Network Players 2-6"
Bloodborne - "Online Play (Optional)"
No Man's Sky - "1 Player"
THIS GAME HAS NO MULTIPLAYER. PERIOD.
Ooh, all caps. I'm convinced.
Oh yeah and you didn't paste the whole thing:
Online Play (Optional)
You left out the part where it says "Online Play (Optional)
Why are you intentionally ignoring the fact that it says "Online Play(Optional)" for NMS as well?
Amazing... could not be bothered to read past the first point.

Honestly I think many people would have been cool with it if he they had just come out and said "Hey, we canceled that feature I talked about on Colbert. Sorry, it would just take too much work for our small team."Not to discount the vague bs they spouted about this feature, but real time MP is hard work and for a small team with a proprietary engine it may just be too hard to do in the context of the game that they designed. Those teams that your comparing them against have a lot more resources to do this kind of thing.
Did the Steam Store ever say "Online" or "Multi-player" at any point in the description?
PSN Store said "Online Play (Optional)" up until at least July 25th. But if you look now, that is gone.
I once believed it didn't, and people harshly corrected me:
Welp... at time of release it was gone for real. ¯\_(ツ_/¯

I honestly don't understand why people are so upset about this. What are you going to do with another person in this game? Go on adventures around the star system and mine stuff together? Have starship races to see who could get to the space station the fastest? Shoot down space pirates together? What?

Damn Pop, and I thought Simone Biles was the most impressive gymnast I've seen this week.
Sean Murray is so great and it depresses me that people are getting on his case.
One thing you have to understand about this man is that he's so creative. He's so creative that his mind is going a mile a minute and sometimes it gets ahead of itself so he tells a few lies. There's nothing wrong with that.
He's the best kind of person for this dying industry filled with sequels. I think people getting on his case is making him sad. A sad Sean is something I hope I never have to see. If Sean is sad, I'm sad.
He invented an amazing game and, even though that amazing game never actually existed outside of his own head, he ended up making one that is still kinda fine.
So what if he repeated lies over and over again interview after interview? So what if he won't own up to it and let us know what the game is actually capable of? Would it better if he didn't lie through his teeth while grinning at us like a jackass? Of course it would. But that smile of his melts my heart and that's worth something. Like, $60.
Anyway, this whole witch hunt is making me ill. Sean Murray is no witch. He's just an honest liar.
Is it cancelled though? From current info I suspect it's simply been pushed back for later (unless they flat out were lying).Honestly I think many people would have been cool with it if he they had just come out and said "Hey, we canceled that feature I talked about on Colbert. Sorry, it would just take too much work for our small team."
That is the mystery now. If they just came out before release and said "this is one, this isn't and here is the planned roadmap for updates" nobody would even have to ask these questions. Is it cancelled though? From current info I suspect it's simply been pushed back for later (unless they flat out were lying).
Feels like HG were on a path to severe overrun to meet their design goals and had to agree a launch minimum with Sony to get the sucker out. I wouldnt be surprised to see big patches/changes going forward possibly including MP.
Assuming the game keeps enough community anyway.

Seriously not even kidding, I've been having a great time with this game
True, we don't really know if it's cancelled, but if it's planned for a future patch they could let us know that as well.Is it cancelled though? From current info I suspect it's simply been pushed back for later (unless they flat out were lying).

Amazing title change!
I'm kind of in the middle about this. It doesn't really affect my enjoyment of the game at all, and I can certainly see this as something that they originally intended to do but then couldn't implement. But at this point they should clarify what is going on and it's not unreasonable for people to be upset that it's not being addressed.
I still wonder if it has something to do with instancing or the like, but given that I can never seem to get my game online in the first place I really can't speculate what this looks like on the server side. If it's an issue of instancing that should be addressed, if the feature just never made it into the game, that should also be addressed.
Just like the issues with Niantic and Pokemon Go, I think the lack of communication is what is really driving the frustration here.
So add Hello Games to the growing list of shady developers then. Fuck this noise. And I really wanted to love NMS, too.

I wish more gamers understood art.
The more I think about it, the more I feel that being able to cross paths with others and see them would just get in the way of the relationship forged between Sean and the player. The subtle and varied nuances of what exists and what doesn't, as told by a procedurally generated narrative out there in the little clusters of cosmos, is actually a conversation between God and man. It is a spiritual journey; 18 quintillion days in the wilderness, as it were.
Sean is our smiling God, and His mysteries are not ours to question. His words might seem confusing to some, but that's just because we are too mired in our literal interpretations to realize that our isolation is a blessing; an offering from Him to us that says:
"Go forth and find thyself. Only thyself."
I wish more gamers understood art.
I think another key point is how long people have known that PS+ wouldn't be required.
And people were discussing that a year ago at the very least.
Basically, those keeping up with game development aren't as surprised as those who haven't kept tabs. Which happens all the time in game development -- features dropped or changed. And yes, it is the developer's job to make sure features are well known.
HG should have had a PR guy long ago to make things clear.

Why does it matter if the servers stay "online"?
To share "moments" of course.Sean Murray
