Neo Geo Pocket Color Appreciation Thread: Way Ahead of the Game (Boy)

Yeah, it was printed but recalled. Think they eventually sold them via that 4 pack.

My copy's ESRB rated as well.

Every NGPC game was recalled when the system was pulled from North American shelves. Still not sure why, never got a real answer from PR.

Faselei just wasn't on shelves long enough to sell many copies.

Does anyone know of a cheap source for cart cases. I'm trying to collect every English-language game at least in cart form. A few games I've bought game only as a cart, though.

I've seen a few on eBay, and the last one was $10 for two of them. That's a little steep for two pieces of plastic in my opinion.

Anyone know of a more reasonable source.

Also, are there any other good places to keep an eye out for games? I've been looking online at eBay, Goodwill, Amazon, and Etsy (yeah there are a few games there).

Thanks.

I love that this thread is reviving itself.

Do you have this?

Has English. I think there's a Japanese puzzle game with english too

Edit: Oops, meant to edit

Other one was Delta Warp https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_bThSqwB8o

Nope, I collect on about 40 platforms so, as a means to keep things streamlined and cost effective I don't collect any kind of import stuff. I do own a few reproductions that are English patched and can run on native US hardware, but those have to be really great games or part of important series (to me) :p

I think the only systems I would have any regrets for this no import rule are Saturn and the TG16, but no biggie.

I usually stick to US stuff too, just you can tell SNK still had plans for the NGPC and that game and others would have been on their way over here (evidenced by the english) and all that. Still pisses me off how things ended

Just got a neogeo pocket with nine games on ebay for about $200. It even included an English language version of Faselei! Love this thing. Really bummed it didn't get more support. It's a peerless retro experience. The only games I don't have that I'm looking to play are Dark Arms, Sonic and Metal Slug 2nd mission. I've got match of the millennium, samurai showdown 2 and king of fighters r2. For me to want to plunk down the cash for The Last Blade someone is going to really have to convince me it's heads and tails above the other fighters I have.

Nice get! I whole heartedly recommend picking up Last Blade as well. Don't have MotM or Gals Fighters to compare it to, but it's my favourite NGPC fighting game on the system. Condensed version of BOTH games, lots of wee unlockables, has a mini version of that burning house stage that appears in every "Best Fighting Game Stage" list that, along with the rest of the stages, look really nice. It feels better than SamSho!2 to me, despite really liking it too.

NGPC is one of my favorite handhelds of all time. I've owned two of them so far. The first one got stolen right out of my backpack in high school. I was devastated. I had quite a few electronics stolen there... *grumble* Anyway a few years later I saw the clearance bundle at GameStop with 6 games and immediately scooped it up remembering how much I loved the system the first time around.

Man, I remember when I got my first one. Picked it up during a trip to NY, played with it the entire flight home. I'd never had a less boring flight in my life. I literally turned it on, and 5 hours later I looked up as we were landing. It was incredible how I just lost myself in it for the entire flight.

My favorite games were SNK vs Capcom: Match of the Millennium, and Metal Slug: Second Mission. It really says something though that one of my favorite fighting games of all time is on a handheld. Match of the Millennium was just something extra special. The graphics and soundtrack, the smooth gameplay, the suite of unlockable characters, the pile of incredibly fun and addicting mini-games. I'd love to see this game remade/re-released.

My stepdad also played the piss out of Neo Turf Masters, to the point that he had me clear the leader boards, because he just couldn't improve on his scores any further.

Are link cables scarce and expensive or is it just my luck?

Probably both. I've been trying to get my hands on one for a fair price for awhile now. Last time I thought I scored on a 5$ link cable on amazon from a third party seller. WHat arrived was a book about the holocaust. Education material, sure but not what I was looking to buy a piece of :p

I'm annoyed at my loose games.

I would kill for some spare mini shockboxes, but looks like I'm about ten years too late to get some. Guess I'll have to buy any cheap gambling games that pop up on ebay and gut them for the boxes lol.

The ones I want from these are out of my current price range, so I thought I'd share with fellow NGPC fans.

A seller on eBay just put up a large collection of CIB games (scroll down a little). All of them look to be in good condition and bidding already reflects that.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=neo+geo+pocket&_sop=10

I'd love to get some of these, but the wife and I just moved, so money has to go to the new house rather than old games. Hopefully, one of you guys can give these games a good new home.

On a side note, if anyone else sees good deals they should post them here.

I'm currently on the hunt for English-language, preferably U.S versions, of Metal Slug 2nd Mission, Gals Fighter, and a really cheap copy of Samurai Showdown. I'd also like to have a English-language NeoGeo Cup 98 Plus and a copy of Densha de Go.

Due to the prices, I've been collecting cart-only copies. Although, I scored a sealed U.S copy of Pacman for a steal, so I have that too. My current collection is 12 games, a NGPC complete in box, and a slightly beat up Slim that's currently on the way from across the Pacific.

Don't want to say too much about this stuff as I know you get banned if you talk about this dirty word. I would like to thank Flavor for this special item. I bought this for myself as I have a small but decent quality games from the Neo Geo Pocket but they is certain games I didn't have a chance to get it at a reasonable price. Also, I like this type of stuff and interested about this for a bit when I found out about it. Took the bullet and get myself this item. Just got it today and this might be a very quick impression.

1st impression, a very simple package with the item you see above (it's inside a small plastic bag with the mail bag when sending to me). They is the cable, the cart, an extra sticker, and the card of the person who make this and also a nice sentence at the back.

I follow the link which take me to the person page and go to the download link. You need to download two software. One is to get the cart to work on the computer and the 2nd is to get the software in the cart. Isn't too hard if you follow the instruction.

When testing the cart, the homebrew I did a test didn't work and actually turn off the handheld. After reading the instruction, I manage to found out the issue and solve it and manage to get the homebrew to work on my handheld.

Did a few minutes test on a game and have to say it work without any issue for now. Also, the neo geo pocket on the pic is front lit which you might not notice it because when I took the pics.

I guess the only improvement I would say for this cart is the built-in switch.

It's the small hole on the left of the cart. It isn't easy to change it and you need some sort of a small pin to change. It might be better if the switch is either a bit bigger or much easy to switch like literally a button you press. It isn't bad for now but a bit worry to change game as I don't want to break it. Also, this cart is hand built which mean they is a chance it won't be 100% perfect. The connector part of the cart where the usb cable connect, you can see the person need to cut that area out and you can see where it was been cut. Not really an issue for me at all.

Overall, a good cart for people to test out some homebrew. It isn't cheap at $79.95 USD but for me, it's worth the money to try out some games or homebrew stuff on my pocket.

Would be cool if krikzz did a NGPC Everdrive but I guess the demand isn't there.

It would be cool to have one cart which play all the games from Neo Geo Pocket that came out. Like you say, they isn't a big demand for it now and won't get one for how small this fanbase is. What I would like if someone use the case of the pocket and fit a Raspberry in it to make it another handheld which play handheld games at that time. Would be cool to see.

Looks kinda cool, and not too pricey. Wouldn't mind picking one up for some games that got fan translations like SvC Card Fighters 2 and Cool Cool Jam.

Aparrently the Master System and Game Gear ones are loss makers due to low demand. It's just too niche.

Pretty sure the Mega Drive ones play Master System games too, which might appeal to people more if they only have/want the one console.

Yes they do with some caveats due to the limited nature of the Mega Drive's backward compatibility (no SG1000 support, no FM Audio)

But even with that considered, NGP is still a vastly more niche system than the Master System or Game Gear, and so if flash carts for them can't turn a profit then a NGP one would also likely not be worth a manufacturing run. The Flash Masta is hand made.

I mean, it's really simple to swap, but I've never seen spares for it. The only real source would be to buy a dead console and harvest the part.

Oh, and any recommendations on a nice case/sleeve for the console?
Good luck finding one these days but the official sleeve for the slim model is nice

ngpc_9407.jpg

Nintendo DS lite cases work pretty well too.

Would love to get the Rockman Arcade pack on this baby, but not spend $200.

Anyone know the best way to light these guys up? I know a detachable light exists, but it's been ages since I've seen one for sale

I keep wanting to pick up a NGPC because I love the more obscure handhelds but I keep holding out hope that I'll find one under retail outside of eBay. One of these days I'm gonna just bite and grab one off eBay but I really hope I can find one somewhere else first!

Just picked up a mint one of these for $50 Canadian off ebay. Got Dark Arm and some shitty slot machine game.

Nice little system. LOVE the clicky joystick it has!

What titles should I be on the lookout for? Outside of the obvious metal slugs and King of fighters.

WELCOME FRIEND.

Last Blade, Match of the Millennium and SamSho!2 are all awesome fighting games. Sonic is a pretty nice reimagining of Sonic 2/3 and arguably a proto-Sonic Advance and usually quite cheap. Card Fighters Clash is worth a look if you like TCGs.

On the more expensive side: Faselei is a very cool strategy game, and Biomotor Unitron is a nice wee RPG. Gals Fighters I've head good things about too.

It's a fairly slim library, but meaty! Enjoy!

yay, congrats. I love that faux carbon fibre look.

Thanks guys.

Ended up grabbing pacman today in my wanders. Playing this with that clicky stick is a joy.

Also played through some dark arms and am starting to enjoy what the game is offering. Music kinda reminds me of Chrystalis back on the NES, so good!

I'm kinda thinking of getting an NGPC mainly to play Sonic Pocket Color. Found a JP copy on ebay but it goes for $50. Tempted though :p

It'd be a steep investment though, but I'll keep an eye on that Ebay listing, it ends by the 29th IIRC, if it is still up by then I'll order it then order an NGPC along the side.
EDIT: Scratch that found a better deal for one that comes with around 10+ games. Might bite on it in due time....

I was about 13 when the NGPC came out and wanted one at the time. But I didn't have a job or the money to buy one. I would have loved to support this underrated handheld back then if I could have. Sucks.

I went with a slim and ordered Neo Turf Masters and Card Fighters Clash. Some of the other highly rated games are a bit pricey nowadays 😕

Doubt Sonic (probably the NGP game with the biggest print) and Dark Arms (underrated) are too pricey, check them out.
