Report: NX to Feature PS4 -style Split D-Pad and Share Button

Hm, I thought Nintendo was really going to push digital downloads.
They can continue doing that and supporting storage solutions.

Remember, the NX is supposedly a mobile-like device. 3DS officially supports up to 32GB SD cards, right? And the NX is supposedly using cartridges like those on 3DS (or they're some version of SD cards). It sounds like the system will be primarily a handheld sort of deal, and anyone who wants the console experience will have options to maximize the console functionality, such as additional storage, and perhaps even supplementary computing devices (docks?) down the line.

Since it was posted at the end of last page... XD

Alright Im done with believing these rumors lol. How you gonna have a share button on a handheld lol? Be at home in wifi? Why not just play on the console.
Same way people "share" stuff using tablets, phones, even 3DS and Vita. Mobile data, mobile hotspots, wi-fi. :p

It also allows to quickly save and upload later. Like on PS4 pressing once saves a screenshot, pressing twice records a clip until you press it again.

No need to upload directly. This just makes it easier and faster. There are 10 years old cameras that had share buttons and allowed to upload to Facebook, whenever you went online.

Officially, up to 32GB but can use to 128GB, as long as its formatted to FAT32.

NX should have no problem officially supporting 256GB SD Cards, plus can use USB drives too.

As long as it has a pro controller or I can use the WiiU pro controller, I dont care, i'm using it as a home console and will only use touch screen as a controller for games that use it right.

64GB would be better, but i would be ok with 32GB expandable with a micro SD. 128GB cards are cheap these days.

To be honest if it's a portable device I don't blame Nintendo for not putting much.
Storage is easy to get for anybody...
Exactly. On Wii U it was a problem because of being a console. There are expectations there. But with the Gamepad, the damn thing was already too expensive. I think a $400 Wii U with more storage wouldn't fared much better honestly.

BUT, with NX it's very clear that the mobile/handheld philosophy is in place, and the price has to be kept to a bare minimum. The base unit needs to be impulse buy territory for the regular consumer so while a lot of us think storage is important, Nintendo's idea that people can find their own storage solutions is more apt than ever.

what makes you think they aren't going to continue to do that? they pushed digital downloads with the 3DS and it had even less storage.

Just kinda hoped games are getting bigger + a great selling point of a hybrid would be having all your games with you + the new Nintendo reward system being purely digital + getting with the times = larger internal storage

expandable memory on a mobile device isn't getting with the times?

The file sizes are tiny compared to HD games.

Even an 128gb SD Card wouldn't store a lot of Wii U content.

Wii U titles are insanely tiny, with a few exceptions (Smash, Xeno, TMS, likely Zelda).

I'd prefer at least 256 GB of storage capacity. That's the minimum required for most devices nowadays.

256GB of fast flash memory isn't feasible unless you want to pay premium price for this thing, and you can't put a HDD inside a portable device. It's a good thing that you can use a micro sd if and when you want to do that, and that they go up to 2TB now.

In any case we're talking about a console with game cards. You won't need to install anything here.

I hate to say it, but people are going to say "the NX is the successor to the Wii U and it needs more space".

This is for those people who will look at the console side of the hybrid and not even think it's first and foremost a handheld...

I hope they bump it up to 64 GB, but I wouldn't be disappointed with 32. You can get 128 GB SD cards for like $35 and that could be enough space for quite a few games.

Most NX games will probably take up far less than 32gb, so I wonder if patches / dlc / save games can all be saved on the game cartridge. Would reduce need for internal storage as well as being very practical. Digital only consumers would still have to supplement with sd cards / external storage though.

Edit:
It's a handheld. You can't fit a hard drive in a handheld.

The dock will have USB ports.

This all makes a ton of sense, so much so that you might wonder whether it is actually a leak and not a lucky guess for fame lol.

Asymmetrical stick placement and split dpad most likely means identical controllers on either side so that you can play multiplayer without battling for 'the best controller'. The share button makes sense because Nintendo has been working on Miiverse sharing well before PlayStation implemented it, they just hadn't developed the right infrastructure for it.

So yeah, makes complete sense.

The 32gb internal storage though, fucking garbage.

Maybe it queues up the clips and screenshots and auto-uploads the next time it connects to wifi?

It all just sounds too much at once. And you put 32GB in it... cant even use the feature out of the box properly

edit: So yall saying NX gonna be able to connect to mobile data? lol

32gbs? If that's how it releases then Nintendo is still out of the god damn minds

How much storage are you expecting on a portable device, and how would that storage be implemented?

Try thinking for a change. It's good for you.

64GB would seem smarter..just so it could store a couple of the biggest games at least.

Of course it possible that the dev kits are restricted to 32GB internal memory purely because that's going to be the largest size for retail games.

Nintendo pls :(

It's weird how the concept of "microSD cards" seems to evade people so easily.

32GB is PERFECT for onboard storage in a handheld, as long as it has an expandable storage slot (and this ain't Apple) that accepts a common widely-used format (and this ain't Sony).

Yeah, tons of phones don't go beyond 32 GB still. It's not a lot of storage but just fine for most people at the start.

Well it's supposed to be a hybrid, and serve both markets. Everything we've heard about it so far indicates that it really only serves the handheld market.

lol @ using something before claiming it's bad. split d-pads will always be awful no matter who makes it. pls be only on the prototype

People here were really expecting Nintendo to put like a terabyte of flash in this thing lol.

32GB is about where they get the best deal in terms of cost per GB. Putting in more would end up forcing them to increase the price, and then you guys would complain that it's too expensive.

I feel like people care more about huge numbers than practicality. Maybe Nintendo should just put out a $600 portable with a 4k screen and 1TB SSD in both the main unit and the dock. Bigger numbers, y'all.

Have you ever heard of free wifi hotspots or tethering?
Just because something is possible dont mean you do it. Not everywhere got the same hotspots or stuff. This will be another streetpass where it works great in some places and other places its a non factor. I pretty sure I completed like about 2 streetpass puzzles

edit: And they get rid of their Dpad? The damn dpad they made? hell naw

I can imagine this if there was the option to couple and decouple the buttons - that way it'd work great as a dpad and as face buttons

Glad to see Nintendo doing a better job communicating about the NX....

People can expect anything at this point.

Nintendo needs to provide information at this point...

Why? Nobody is forcing people to come up with expectations. Have some patience. It will be announced next month.

This isn't 2001 any more. Free Wifi is everywhere, tethering exists, and microSD cards are a thing that exists in large capacities.

And people say Nintendo are the ones behind the times...
