PS4 Pro: The Ultimate FAQ

my biggest question is and I know it has probably been asked but it seems conflicting information given EG has claimed a game will be native.

Are the 4k games really native or are they just 1080p up-scaled? If so, wtf is the point?

and it literally looks like 2 ps4s duct taped together lmao.

It's not really upscaled, it's a Sony patent hardware solution that's weird and hard to explain.

Sounds to me this is similar to Killzone Shadowfalls temporal rendering, only now in a hardware solution. Plus, since its being done from an even divisible image resolution, it doesn't have nearly as bad artifacting or blur.

It's not true 4K rendering, but it does offer a much sharper picture than 1080P and is filling 4K worth of unique pixles. (Some being temporal best guesses).

Will I be able to swap out hard drives? Is this information known?

If not, is there support for external hard drives?

By swap you mean having 2 or 3 drives that you swap regularly ?
If so, you can, but they need to have the same firmware installed. So when firmware updates, you need to do it on all your drives. That's how it was when I tried at least, dunno if that changed since.

Q: Does PS4 Pro support Ultra 4K Blu-ray Discs?
No, PS4 Pro’s internal Blu-ray drive does not support the new Ultra 4K Blu-ray Disc format. It supports the same Blu-ray Disc specs as the standard PS4. The Blu-ray Disc Player application, however, will support high-quality upscaling of DVD and Blu-ray Disc content.
Pass.

Is there a list of confirmed games that will support the Pro? I heard Yakuza 6 did.

Not a full list, but all games past october must include one by default.

Has sony said anything about games eventually requiring a neo mode? The way the faq is worded makes it sound optional...

Its not optional. They put in a disclaimer because september games require late patches, and won't be out at launch.

To be more accurate, there is no one universal way PS4 Pro is doing 4K.

It's entirely dependent on the game. Some will be 4K native, some - most I'm sure - will be reconstructing or resampling in some manner from higher res buffers (e.g. 1800p checkerboard , or whatever fits the games perf profile). For example, the elder scrolls online and the last of us remastered patches have 4K native modes.

I find it hard to believe that they'll require to support Pro with additional effects or expanded res. Just supporting the Pro is very easy though since the h/w is fully compatible on a binary level (well, GPU is a bit different but nothing a thin API/driver can't fix). So "support" means nothing here as it may well mean that a game will work on the Pro with the exact same graphics as on OG PS4.

This is incredibly helpful and I'm glad they acted quickly to get this out there.

That being said, they need to expand on this one more:

Q: What benefits does PS4 Pro provide when played on a non-4K HDTV?
PS4 Pro offers benefits even if you play on a HDTV that isn’t 4K. Depending on how the developer chooses to use the increased processing power, games with PS4 Pro support are able to render higher or more consistent framerates, increased environmental and character model detail, improved overall visual quality, and other related visual enhancements. For a look at how games are using the power of PS4 Pro, watch some of the first game footage on our YouTube page.

Additionally, PS4 games that render below native 1080p (maximum quality for HD TVs) on the standard PS4 can be elevated to render at full native 1080p on an HDTV.

See below for a chart detailing how PS4 Pro will display based on different TV types.

Many of us want to know if unpatched games can see improvements with PS4 Pro? Mainly, we want to know about games that struggled with framerate on PS4 or ran unlocked. We don't need a definite "yes, you'll see improvement." We just want to know if it's possible or if the Pro will default to a "legacy" mode.

Do we know about ventilation on it? I know it's a little too soon but with it being 2cm wider + deeper (I believe) and apparently having no back vents, just curious.
Absolutely want to know about this as well. My PS4 is incredibly loud, but I'm not going to crack it open to clean the fan until I hear more about the Pro.

Hoping for an elite controller, got an extra light bar. Fuck off, Sony.

And yes, I realize it's not an extra light, just a clear part of the touchpad. Still shit.
I think not releasing a Pro Controller alongside the Pro Console is a huge missed opportunity for Sony. I don't even own Xbox, but MS is blowing them out of the water with their controller options right now (Elite plus the Design Lab).

Honestly, I'm more interested in a Pro DS4 controller than I am the Pro console.

Wait what? New controller too?
Yeah, but the changes are very minor. It's in the FAQ.

Yes. you will be able to do 4K@30hz if you have HDMI 1.4+ cables.

Thanks. Then there is HDMI 2.0a, which my TV apparently, hopefully, got an update for. For HDR content

Another question: will the Pro sense whether it is connected to a 4K HDR TV and automatically enable HDR content? I'm just wondering if I will need to do anything in my TV's settings to make it compatible. My Samsung does have UHD Color Option that you can toggle for each HDMI input. I'm supposing this is for HDR enabled signals?

Yea I'm curious about that as well. Does Sony even have a way to implement it running the same as the standard PS4?

Good question. I can't believe they would possibly waste the time to force something like that. It's why I'm leaning toward there being improvements to unpatched games...it's just one of those things they can't really promise or commit to publicly.

Then again...I was 100% sure it was going to play 4K Bluray as well, so who knows.

That is a question I want to ask myself too. But I really don't think you will need to turn on the HDR mode on your Samsung 4k TV as the PS4 Pro will already have its HDR mode automatically on (auto detection).

From New Dualshock 4 pre order page.
I called that one. The old DS4 lightbar design has good pitch-angle tracking to the back side but less so the front, which this should help with.

But it also means you don't have to turn it towards you in local multiplayer to see what colour player you are. And it looks neat!

A third improvement not mentioned is the matte circle backings behind the dpad and face buttons.

On my current PS4 I was able to upgrade to a 2TB HHD. However, I haven't seen mention of that feature in regards to the PS4 Pro. The reason I'm worried is that the enclosure seems to be sealed thus not allowing for an upgrade.

Maybe I'm wrong?
There's breaks in the rear, right side casing that look like the most likely place for HDD access.

Now I'm wondering what a Pro version of Senran Kagura will be like.

Even more Life and Hometown.

Nice to hear i will be remote playing at 1080p instead of 720p on my new Galaxy 7. Should look pretty damn good

I assume the console-to-console data transfer via Ethernet must be carried out through a router/switch, rather than directly attaching the consoles to each other. If that were the case, I don't think they could have said "standard" Ethernet cable, as, IIRC, a CAT6 or higher cable is required for direct Ethernet connections.

Pretty sure you could do transfer on PS3 just by connecting both with ethernet, it's been a while though I may be misremembering

I'd presume the "virtually all" line is because they're not requiring games that release in one territory before the Pro launch (or whatever the cutoff point for requiring Pro support is) and another territory after launch to do a Pro build. Which is a sensible exception to make, though I am hoping that Persona 5 and Tales of Berseria get them anyway.
