Sony announces PS4 Pro, $399, November 10th

I have to ask, since you can only have one active PS4 at a time on your account, and with the advent of the PS4 Pro, will Sony update their account management to allow the user to have two PS4s?

It'll probably work like Vita/PSP and allow you a Pro and an OG at the same time. Or they'll just adjust it to two PS4s of any description (this is doubtful though).

What would the price be like for Pro’s spec in 2013? $600 maybe? More? Would Sony have sold more units, or made more money with a launch in November 2013 of both units? Upgrade through the gen are mostly small tinkering and cosmetics.

PS4 $399
PS4P $599

- Refresh to both units a year later makes them smaller
- Improvements to heat and noise levels
- Added 4K players
- Redesigned controllers/peripherals
- etc...

Could this have worked?

No people would have felt cheated but... There would likely be upgraded offers

Polaris didn't exist in 2013... They couldn't have made it using an AMD GPU without it needing to use a lot more energy and producing a LOT more heat for the same performance. It would have needed a giant heatsink and loud fans.

It would have been PS3 launch all over again if the tech existed back then. $599 won't fly.

I thought most people said CPU was weak. So maybe they couldn’t get to 4.2TF but something closer couldn’t be accomplished in 2013 I mean, at least with CPU right? I5 or I7 performance? What was high end PC’s specs at that time?

If AMD doesn't have a strong enough Pro CPU right now for Sony to use, why would they have had one 3 years ago?

And the GPU's at the time compared with the current GPU of the PS4 Pro were over 500$ at minimum with 200watts alone. The GPU of PS4 Pro right now, which is midrange, was the highest end single GPU at the time(7970 upgraded Gigahertz edition)

I guess I'm just a little confused as to why this is being hyped...

Do that many people have 4k TVs? How do you guys know older games are going to be patched? Is everyone just future proofing? Am I just old now and only use my PS4 for Netflix and Hulu :(

You don't need a 4k TV to see major improvement. The vast majority of previously released games won't get patched, but every single AAA game this Fall is in line for an upgraded Pro mode. So publishers and devs will be supporting the product initially.

I don't speak for everyone, but for me, I've pre-ordered the PS4P because I've been spoiled by PC games (1080p @ 60fps) and the closer I get to that experience for console exclusives, the better.

I don't have 4K or HDR yet, but once my current display dies - whenever that is - getting one will likely be the first thing I do.

"It's up to the developers".

I don't have a 4k tv so have kept my Amazon pre-order just to see what type of actual (not potential) improvements start to materialise before launch.

If the answer is "not much for not many games" then I'm sure a lot of us will cancel our pre-orders and wait until we get a good 4k tv.

The CPUs for both the PS4 and XBO are they way they are because AMD couldn't deliver what either party was hoping for. There really wasn't much either Sony or MS could do about it in 2013.

Its up to the developers how they want to use the power, but you will see a significant difference in quality from normal PS4 regardless of if you have a 4K television or a 1080p television. If they focus on a '4K' mode, that mode is downscaled to your 1080p TV or rendered out to your 4K TV, giving you night and day image quality compared to your normal 1080p PS4 game upscaled to 4K or rendered at native res on a 1080p TV.

They should have focused more on improvements that 1080p users will enjoy instead of the meeting being all about HDR, which almost no one has right now.

"HDR" is easy to market even if very few know what it is and even TV manufacturers can't agree on a definition/standard.

Agree there will be a difference but I will wait for comparison shots (we have none) to see if the difference is worth double-dipping on a ps4. People expecting 1080/60 or 1080/better graphics are likely to be disappointed in most cases.

We already have games utilizing better graphics at 1080p, Tomb Raider for example is going for PC ultra settings+ as an option, as well as a 4K mode and a high framerate mode as well.

Now is that what every dev will do? Nah, but they can if they want.

i just hope that the eventual ps5 in a few years is BC. I've invested more in this generation than any other before.

That's my hope, especially with both PS4 and NEO modes

Not the biggest demanding game graphics wise, but we have a new case of a native 4K on PS4 Pro with Mantis Burn Racing. I believe that's the third game after The Elder Scrolls Online and TLOU Remastered ?

Established UK based developer VooFoo Studios has exciting news for fans pumped for November’s release of the PlayStation 4 Pro by today confirming that Mantis Burn Racing will support full native 4K at 60FPS for crystal-clear high definition racing to truly immerse players in the race.

Mantis Burn Racing will take the massive 4K resolution offered by the PS4 Pro to add incredible extra detail to the vehicles and environments and present a full 1080p view for each player in 4-player split-screen racing in one of the most immersive racing experiences available to gamers.

“With Mantis Burn Racing we’re delivering full native 4K whilst maintaining 60FPS without using checkerboard techniques or having to reduce any of our effects”, said Mark Williams, Technology Director at VooFoo Studios.

In 2013(when PS3 came out) the R9 280x had virtually identical specs to the 7970 GHz Edition, it was $299 card at that point...

bought $440 of BestBuy credit from Ebay for $400 and preordered... :[

I just did the same thing today. Just an FYI for anyone interested I also got a 10% back in eBay bucks offer as well (via email) so that's $440 in Best Buy credit for $400 PLUS an additional $40 in eBay bucks. Not sure if that 10% eBay bucks is for everyone or just certain email subscribers or ??? Anyways it's a good deal even without that so I thought I would pass it along.

$10 bonus on $100:

This may have have been answered, but:

I have a 2TB HDD in my current PS4. Will it be as easy as literally just swapping HDD's and turning on the PS4 Pro?

I doubt it. It's probably just like PS3. Once you pull that HDD out and put it in a system (same one or not) the system will reformat it. Which means all your data is gone.

In theory, could I just take the 2TB HDD out of my PS4 and put it straight into my Pro before even hooking the thing up? That should work right? In my head it should, but I could be forgetting a step.

Should be fun to transfer everything from my OG PS4, put THAT HD in to the Pro, and transfer everything back again to the now formatted 2TB drive...

Hi, I'm nortonff. I spend my life going into threads to say that I don't care about the topic of the thread. It's a really good use of my time.

Each console have an ID attached to the HDD. So it wouldn't work just plugging it.

Feck. Oh well. So, what's the most logical way to get my 2TB HDD into my Pro, and also retain my profile, games etc. Sounds like there isn't a way lol I'll just have to format it, and then redownload everything I take it.
You could always back up everything to a external drive.

Quick question

Can you do the same PS3 <=> PS3 using the Ethernet port for the PS4 to PS4Pro?

With FW 4.0, yes you can!

"You will be able to copy your games, saved data, captured videos and screenshots, system settings, and other content from a standard PS4 to PS4 Pro using a standard Ethernet cable. This process will also work from standard PS4 to standard PS4, PS4 Pro to standard PS4, and PS4 Pro to PS4 Pro provided that both units have system software update 4.00 or higher installed, and the same PSN account is signed into both systems."

That's a damn shame, AMD screwed us all in a way back in 2013.

Amazon seems to be offering $230 if you have two controllers.

What are you talking about? Are you sure you're not looking at Canadian Amazon or something? Not to mention, how would you throw in your second controller? Amazon is just over $160.

Edit: I found what you were talking about. I have no idea how that's supposed to work since that's not even a real bundle. Very weird. And I just noticed there's a "refurb" model you can trade in apparently. How is that supposed to work?
