Xbox One wins 3 consecutive months in NPD for the first time, #1 UK, up YoY

3 Months? Well damn, thats pretty impressive.

The Xbox division is clearly putting effort on the things they do, Backwards compatibility is better than ever and the Xbox One S was a really smart move.

Although its tough to swallow the fact that they basically rushed ReCore out when it could have used a delay, eh, taking the good with the bad i guess.

Sony needs to cut 50 off the slims price.

No way it wins again at price parity with the one S with less features and less premium build.

Anecdotal but I know of 5 Co workers that bought the one S simply for the 4k bluray player. Such a dumb move by Sony not putting that into the slim or pro

I thought the UHD player didn't matter though. We've all turned to streaming for our entertainment right??

Actually sony themselves downplayed it 4k bluray, i mean they do make and sell them so their research suggests people were not interested in 4k players, time will tell if that was the correct choice or not

This is true. Their own research said streaming is more important than UHD Bluray, I know it doesn't matter to me but we'll see how the market reacts. Both consoles selling well is a good thing.

November is going to be interesting.

The verdict is out on that one.

The XB1 is doing a lot of stuff to get good sales, I just don't think the 4k playback is one of the bigger factors.

I think you underestimating getting good value at a great price. One S with 4K playback was exactly that. It was a genius move by MS. It really was.

Ya know when PS3 came out everyone made fun of it because people only bought it for movies and not games. Why is Sony pissed on for not including a drive but Xbox isn't?

And yet it helped Sony win the format war with HD-DVD. A lot of people bought PS3 as a blu-ray player that would upgrade them with profiles too over expensive standalones. Plus everyone gave Microsoft shit for it. It was over 10 years ago now and yet you're bringing up that and not the current situation. Sony made a misstep with no UHD player especially as 4K television sales are getting hot. They provide a 4K console but no way to actually play their own 4K UHD blu-ray technology. So stupid.

Edit: I read it wrong, the PR only mentions September, so we don't know if in the UK the Xbox One is YoY in 2016.

It was 15.8% down as of May.
UK did have some good deals and price drops starting in June. Could be flat or sligtly down.

I will say that the tone definitely changed around certain forums when it came to announcements regarding the Xbox in recent months. That's for certain.

Good on MS. I'll buy one soon, hopefully (once a certain game is announced for BC).

How big are the UK and US markets in terms of sales? Like what percentage of sales are they worldwide?

I guess what I'm getting at is if hypothetically if Microsoft outsold the PS4 every month in the UK and US would it matter in terms of overall sales in the grand scheme of things?

I'm glad Microsoft have sold more consoles, I don't own an Xbox One anymore but I feel that this year in terms of holiday exclusives this year they've got more games I'm interested in.

I'm also one of very few people that wishes Microsoft had stuck to their original vision of the Xbox One, it sounded pretty damn cool to me, but then again my consoles are always online, and I'm all digital anyway.

Raises hand! The only reason why I bought and ended up loving that console.

People really should look at the numbers more than just who wins a month. The gap Xbox One has closed during these three months is something like 150-200k. PS4 will make up for that (and more) with single month when PS4 Pro launches in November. As a whole this year will be another year when the gap between PS4 and Xbox One widens even in US.

They are a pretty good chunk, but in terms of the market leader the race is already decided. PS4 has won, and will very likely start winning a lot of months in the US again when the Pro launches.

The main take away from this news is that it seems the Xbox One has really found some solid success with the S in a good chunk of markets and is quite the turn around from where they started this generation.

I've crunched the numbers, this definitely checks out.

I am not disagreeing with you here, I think it is stupid. But back then, there was no real digital market, you have to take that into consideration.

I wonder how many people stream vs people who actually buy Blu-rays these days.

1000%.

People down play it here, but obviously it was a big deal.

It was, and not only that they all waited until the pro reveal, and the ensuing shitstorm that the pro wasn't going to have it.

The thing is people downplay this shit, but ask anyone that has bought a new TV in the past year that's 4k, guess what, they want the best visual quality to prove the upgrade was viable. Sure it may not equate to a ton of uhd disc sales, but they have the option, to get the very best you can have. Sony basically said fuck you, enjoy this nice stream, sry if u have datacaps:)

Ballpark 55% or so of global console market.

Ah ok so it's a very good thing then. Yeah as you say Sony have sold a crap ton more units but that's not to say the Xbox one has done badly in isolation. It's sold more than the 360 right, or have I imagined that?

I wonder what effect Scorpio will have in terms of sales, as this is a really good opportunity for Microsoft to watch how Sony get on with the Pro, and try and improve on any mistakes they might make along the way.

Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 in the Americas and UK and the PS3 was still able to catch up thanks to main land Europe and Asia. Microsoft would need to do much better in Europe for a lead in the Americas and UK to matter.

Is the Xbox One family outselling the PS4 family because of the S model or is it because the original model is selling for cheaper than a Wii U?

I'd wager more stream, but I think people just inherently like "value". Even if that value includes things they may not necessarily take advantage of.

I mean in the end, both consoles are the same price, with the same storage, with virtually the same game library. But one does a bit more media stuff so it has more perceived "value".

I dunno, I think there's something to it. Yeah, you may never use 4K bluray, but for the same money, it's nice to know it's there kinda thing.

That doesn't fit the laughable narrative that a UHD drive is going to make a significant difference to market share.

I bought an Xbox One in October and I bought my first 360 ever at the end of August. I still don't have a PS4 despite owning ever other current generation system.

There are some deals out there.

Xbox one S is 4k and HDR. Ps4 slim can't do that.

- what a average consumer sees

I think sony messed up not putting 4k media in the slim. Really misscalculation there

I would agree with you if they were getting completely blown out of the water and the ps4k didnt exist this months victory seems pretty narrow, and considering sony hasnt started their holiday marketing yet... i myself will hold of on such a prediction... that said i understand and respect your point of view

Well I can't see a reason to grab a PS4 this holiday but the bone has some decent fall exclusives (Which I played on PC)so I'm not surprised.

It's a variety of factors at play. Pricing and deals play a huge factor yea.

The PS4 S was pretty much a muted launch as well (terribly executed as well), I suspect, due to it being a worse value proposition over the OG, especially to the mainstream (UC4 bundled instead of Black Ops 3).

That doesn't fit the laughable narrative that a UHD drive is going to make a significant difference to market share.

I fully expect these posts to disappear when the PS4 starts winning again. The narrative only really applies for 4-5 months.

The King slayer has returned

Congrats to the Xbox division. They nailed it with the S and their recent games have been incredible.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

If you're all digital you got already all the benefits they were touting.

You realize that sales were close right? And that WW most likely Ps4 still leads?

Yes of course, it's obvious that if you look at the numbers instead of the headlines, the margins are small and just in Japan Sony has gained more than what they have lost in US and UK but the point remains.
The Pro is robbing the Slim of the sales from core gamers and upgraders, while more price conscious buyers are definetly waiting for the holiday season deals. In this sense Sony's sales have been delayed until November+Decemeber. If you look at the preorders charts the Pro has ben outselling both PS4 and XB1 since it was announced. Those sales will be counted in November. And then the Slim will also get more appealing bundles (COD, Watch Dogs 2 and FFXV) plus a price cut to 250$ on BF and maybe December. So you can see how sales right now are muted.
Still in my opinion it's good if a competitor is successful and everyone is reminded that you have to constantly fight and offer good value to stay on the top ;)

Yeah I think the most surprising thing to come from all of this is the complete difference people have reacted to the two Slim models. The Xbox's seems to be a big success while the PS4 Slim has been met with a resounding "meh".

The main factor of course has to be the fact the XboxS is an actual improvement over the base model, but still I would have thought the PS4 Slim would move more units than it has.

They've certainly cleaned up their act from that disastrous launch . They've created a beautiful revision of the Xbox One. Provided a lot of great games to play and more importantly and the biggest thing thats probably led to how certain forums react to MS. They've allowed their games on PC day and date.

Now people who would have once trolled and shitted on MS games even if they were good, no longer have to pretend to hate them as they can play as well if they have a capable PC or laptop.

I've noted the tone change in the Forza Horizon 3 threads on here and the Gears 4 one if those games were still Xbox Omne

The thing is releasing 3 pieces of HW back to back something was bound to not do as well.
