I thought it a bit odd they do this on a Sunday but I'm now wondering if Westworld has anything to do with it. 3rd episode airs tonight and maybe they are trying to catch the attention of those watching it. Probably a long shot I guess.

If they did have multiple protagonists I reckon we'd get a female one this time, especially with all the press they got about it being all men in GTA V

Yeah no, Rockstar games always have set protagonists and thats good. Not everything has to be create-your-own.

Err, Mass Effect is the kind of thing I'm talking about, you can still have a "create your own character" type of rpg while still maintaining a good story/character focus. That's where the different backgrouds come into play, you have different "characters" and then allow the player to pick from one of those and customize it and then tell a story with that character.

Just like how ME shifted some story elements around depending on if you played a female or male and then shifted more depending on choices you made and how it unfolded.

Does HBO do external ad spots like that? I always thought they just had internal promotions (I haven't actually watched HBO on TV in like three years so I actually have no idea).

Could be I guess 3rd episode, 3rd red dead, half life 3?

I honestly think Rockstar is one of the few studios that really doesn't care about press feedback, but that they might consider it on the basis that this is something that happens in Westerns more frequently than crime films.

I wouldn't carve it in stone though.

I have no idea. Rockstar ain't daft. Westworld (the original movie) probably had some kind of influence on Red Dead. The new show seems to be hugely popular so far so i wouldnt put it past them to tease their new western game on the day the show airs. Hey you like western tv shows? Here is a cool western game we're doing. I'm no marketing genius but it's a thought.

Wouldn't be out of place? Many runaway slaves ran west and inhabited the area before the us started its expansion, or it could be a mexican soldier if its set pre us mexican war

I'm thinking the game will take place in the late west (1890s-1900s). The McCabe and Mrs. Miller/ Wild Bunch era. I do think it would be interesting to have an ex Rough Rider as a main character. Hell make the battle for San Juan Hill be the opening.

Rockstar has always beats to its own drum, they just tend to go with the theme and characters they want to do regardless of any social pressure

if the next Red Dead features 3 white males as protagonists, I can where many might be dissapointed, but i think Rockstar always knows what its doing

Yeah they dont care. After GTA III and Manhunt they just do what they want. They are used to dealing with all sorts of stuff.

But the all male protagonists was the only controversy that I remember them responding to/trying to justify.

I can't think of anything worse than shoe horning in a female protagonist simply to appease reviewers or fans or anyone.

If they have an intriguing story with a female lead then great. But don't force it.

It's more likely to have a female protagonist if they keep the 3 characters from GTA5. I wouldn't bet on it if they go with a 1 character game.

Some heavy hyperbole there.
Not really. It's a numbers game. Half-Life simply doesn't have the mainstream cross-over appeal that [insert Rockstar game here] does (specifically, Half-Life 2 has sold somewhere in the ballpark of 12-13 million...Red Dead Redemption sold well over 14 million and GTAV has shipped over 65 million).

Sure, Half-Life 3 might crash GAF, but a new Rockstar game will get headlines in the New York Times business section.

Exactly. A Rockstar game gets coverage by everyone, not just gaming sites. Mainstream news outlets will cover a new Rockstar announcement

Someone on an other board mentioned that around the same time last year Rockstar started posting stuff for their gta v Halloween event.

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.
Since they posted this on a sunday i think chances are pretty good that they will reveal the game tomorrow.

one thing though, do you guys think the lack of Benz is going to alter the quality of the game? he really had alot to do with R* success and getting the original Red Dead Redemption in a working condition

Well the rumours and hints have been floating around the net for a while now and it feels like R* are overdue with something new, GTA 5 was a long time ago afterall.

A remaster and sequel would be amazing please R*.

Better yet, no set-protag and instead if works more like an rpg where you can make different ones yourself, with different backgrounds (like being a Native American) which in turn influence how people treat you and the story that plays out changes both depending on what type of character you make and choices you make throughout the game.

No. God no.
