PlayStation VR Launch Thread: Welcome to The Real World

I finally fired up Until Dawn: Rush of Blood. It's the perfect balance of fun and scary. I don't think I can handle anything scarier than that, though. Horror is where I think I would literally shit in my pants in VR.

I noticed I have two scratches on my left lens of my PS VR headset. I'm quite shocked, and disappointed, by this. It only took 3 days or less for this to happen. I have only used the included microfiber cloth to wipe down the lens and nothing else. Thankfully, it must be very light surface level scratches, as they are nonexistent when playing. Still, I'd have expected some kind of durability, I guess. It's not like I've been rough with the headset. I have a collector's mentality and baby all of my stuff.

Still deciding if I want to buy RIGS... barely enough in the budget for it and I really don't want to be let down by a dwindling player base/lackluster SP.

I'm pretty envious about you people that can handle the more intense stuff.

Until Dawn looks very well made and was very fun in the demo but I can't handle the enemies and environments getting in my face.

I just can't handle scary stuff. I thought Batman was borderline.

Maybe next week with Pixel Gear I can get my shooting on without the dark aesthetics. That or Ace Banana.

Having an Oculus and a Vive I havent been "blown away", but I will say the entertainment factor is high since there seems to be a lot to PLAY vs simple "experiences". Watching my kid play DCVR demo and coming to grips with proper 1st person driving was awesome to see. Thumper demo had me grinning the whole time. RIGS and BattleZone are neat "hey, games are actually possible" realizations. Thinking first purchases are going to be Thumper, Rez, and Arkham (given all the impressions on it).

I'm in the same boat

I can't handle scary things either, even the big burly dude in The Heist got me nervous as fuck and watching my boyfriend play Here They Lie makes me both intrigued at all the trippy stuff and turned off by the horror aspect.

I couldnt get full matches in RIGS today, so not sure if that will improve over time. Hopefully it will it's a cool game.

On the horror stuff. I don't find the haunted house ride Until Dawn stuff too bad but I have no plans for playing RE7 at all. Way too much tension. I can barely play that on a TV. Imagine something like Dead Space in VR. Lol

So besides SportsBarVR, are there any other online co-op games my friend and I can pick up?

Battlezone is co-op only. RIGS has a grouping function for PvP.

The SP is pretty comprehensive. Lots of stuff to unlock and a full division/tournament set-up.

Online MP might be an issue.

I just keep waiting for the jump scares (they all do it) and just playing a game constantly thinking where it will be is not fun for me.

I guess shooting lends itself by default better to criminals and scary stuff but I would just like a game where I shoot some dart gun or bow and arrow, like Sports Champions on PS3.

Can I get some impressions of The Brookhaven Experiment?

I only got about 10 min into it before I had to leave my house, but I liked what I played. You stand for it, have 360 degrees of viewpoint and can be attacked from any angle. You have a knife, flashlight and gun to start. You hit O on the flashlight hand to do a quick 180 so you dont have to turn around in real life. Aiming was a little weird, I felt like I was missing when I was lined up, but that could be just the starter gun. You have a load out screen between waves to switch gear, mods, grenades, etc. I am hoping to get some more time with it, but so far I thought it was fun.

My unit is still overheating, but I had the chance to complete The London Heist and that was hands down worth the price of admission.

Holy shit.

What a groundbreaking experience that engages you with narrative and semi compelling shooting. I got really sucked into this one and it sold me on this machine as a whole.

Now it's time to figure out what the hell is going wrong with that box. It was super hot.

Did you take the plastic off the vent?

I'm very similar. I don't like jump scares in anything.

Is there any screenshot representation of PSVR headset IQ?

My headset focus is almost impossible to get right, especially for right lens, left lens is in focus most of the time, but right one is more tricky. I have to position psvr rather high to get acceptable picture.. I'm blown away by the device, its just Im feeling that Im not getting the best possible IQ.

I used the eye measurements setting, no luck either.

I don't love jump scares in anything but have no problem with them. However hearing that a game in VR has jump scares with shit jumping in your face immediately puts it on my no-go list. Just don't even consider it anymore.
VR horror games don't need that stuff. Build a creepy environment and people will get spooked regardless.

They need to make it a slider (hide it behind advanced or export option if they must) and let people tune it perfectly for their eyes.

I read about some alleged trick where you partially close your eyes and then use that distance but I think it made the image worse because I had to really open my eyes to get it to look good.

And then combine it with standing. No thanks.

You know what, I turned 50 this March (16th,preorder day),been gaming for over 40 years.... seen all the changes and advancements in programming and tech bringing us forever increasing immersion and entertainment in our hobby.

Well, PSVR just brought that "kid at Xmas" feeling right back to this cynical bastard. I really can't wait to see and play all the coming titles over the next few months, it's bloody great time to be a gamer!
I bought rigs, dcvr,thumper...been through the demo disc and playroom vr (yep, that platformer NEEDS a full game) and theres nothing I'd consider *crap* amongst em all.

Sony, if I wore a cap I'd doff it in your direction.

That's awesome. Hope I'm still playing and enjoying games at your age.

This. I have only gamed for a little over 20 years, but VR has turned me into a little kid again with the fun factor. Gaming has gotten so stagnant and dull, but VR is so fresh and fun and has changed my perspective on the current gaming landscape.

Does Until Dawn Rush of Blood play OK with the Dual Shock?
I don't think it's the best. You have a gun in each hand, and you point both guns at the same location using the motion of the DS. With the move, the two hands are controlled independently. I think it takes away from the immersion and is a little odd to control virtual hands simultaneously with a DS.

Unfortunately I packed up my PSVR to send back to Amazon today. The tech is amazing, the games are great, but when I can't be in it for more than 5 minutes and it takes me over a day to recover from those few minutes I don't think it makes sense for me right now.

But make no mistake, this is the real deal and it makes me sad to have to return it. If I hear of an update that fixes the sway, or when version 2 comes out in a couple years I'll be the first one to jump right back in. There's nothing quite like feeling like you're actually in a game world.

Starting to feel the same.

It's actually getting in the way of me wanting to throw it on. Why the hell is it doing that? Like, the world sometime tries to run away from my face when I move in close to look at stuff. This happens regardless how close/far I am from the camera.

Sitting perfecrly still helps, but you can still see things pulsing towards me and away from me.

Not every game does it either, but a lot do a FB it's discouraging me from jumping cash on full games :-/

Holy shit, yes.
that was mind-blowing on levels I could not comprehend.

my fear of heights was triggering so hard when i looked down. I couldn't even force myself to look straight down for more than a few seconds. I knew it wasn't real, but the feeling was indistinguishable.

That's what I've been saying! You're Bruce Wayne goddamn it, you can afford to install a few safety-railings around the cave!

So my buddy wants to know if porn is available with this?.....

I have to say watching movies on this is surprisingly decent.

You just take the picture. The further apart you put the boxes the higher the number gets the closer they are the lower the number. It doesn't really matter where the eyes are if you know what you want.
With that said, I've put it at both extremes and haven't noticed a huge difference. The image quality just isn't great, so it looks blurry. It's not a matter of adjusting anything.

So I'm having a problem with Batman. I tried it yesterday and it worked fine, but today the world is all shaky and shifting same with my hands they keep moving on their own, I tried recalibrating but it doesn't fix it. Any help would be appreciated.

Try a complete power down and restart of your PS4. This has been working for some people with drift/shake issues. It worked for me.

There's an eye measuring setting?

Go to settings in ps4 then devices and psvr

So i just finished Rez, and the X-Zone. O M G

This is the real shit, it's crazy. It's like you've seen the after life. Absolutely incredible, intense, and beautiful. Certainly one of the most amazing things in my life! When i was just telling myself i was maybe a little blased with VR, i wasn't amazed.. Well shit, this thing can deliver above what you would imagine with talented artists.

That's strange that the normal games is so shy in comparison actually....

Just a problem it seems, for me. I would be pretty certain performances are less good in X-Zone and the resolution isn't the same. It's all blurry...

Try a full reboot. I read on here that it helped people when the tracking stopped working when it was working fine before.

Played a little bit more with PSVR yesterday. First was Allumette. It's beautiful. A bit blurry, but still beautiful. Being able to move around and watch from many different angles really was an amazing experience.

Then I tried the cinema mode. Put a Blu-ray in. It wasn't bad, but I still prefer to watch movies on my TV.
Details are lost when watching in cinema mode,in that sense anime in cinema mode holds up better.

Also played PES on cinema mode. This got me thinking.
Maybe devs can utilize the Headset more like Playroom VR? Player 1 play in VR, and player 2 on TV.

Lastly, I played the ocean descent demo. It was superb. I got scared a little bit when the cage dropped further into a pitch black hole, even though I knew it wasn't the shark demo. The immersion is real.

Overall, I'm still impressed.

To anyone that has used a Rift or Vive, have you gotten the PSVR headset to be as accurate with its positional tracking (or very close to)?

43, same. I reckon growing up with Lo-res 10fps 3D is handy in making us less picky about resolution & aliasing too :) maybe not picky but more accepting of the tech's limitations.

All we need now is a VR version of Crammond's The Sentinel.

What's considered a full reboot?

Complete power down the way you're supposed to when doing the initial setup.

I've started doing it as a matter of course when starting a VR session.

No. Not even fucking close (to my Vive)

It sees me, and I can move around a small bit, and that is being translated loosely within the game, but most of the times if I do anything outside of just sitting still, things get swimmy and uncomfortable.

Fwiw, I never once had this issue with units at Best Buy or GameStop.

I believe the one on PSN is a port of the one from PC that tuns on Vive. Not sure how that game would ever work on GearVR.

Ha, yeah, was gonna say that must have gone through some massive compromises.

Anyone know if Best Buy or GameStop has demo units out yet? Wanna try before I buy.

How did you miss the demos they had for over a month now, every weekend? Not sure if they're still running them, but worth a look.

I have been blown away by what I've played on PS VR. Batman was incredible. Even a bunch of the stuff in Playroom is really impressive. I also tried playing some stuff on the Demo disk including playstation worlds, and other stuff that doesnt require much head turning.

I pulled a muscle in my neck a couple days ago so I haven't been able to go ham, but I cant wait to play Battle Zone and Rez Infinite *_*.

It's extremely picky about movement. Standing always seems to have more of that motion you are talking about while seated games seem to be just aboit fine.

I am hoping it's things than can be improved with software. Sometimes mine is dead still while other times it's just always moving eeeeeeevr so slightly.

Yeah. I've had a blast in spite of it because the software is so well made.

I just hope it's resolved somehow (or Sony provides a non-cheapo built-for-VR tracking solution). The cat / mouse game in Playroom nearly made me sick playing as the cat (since the ground would continually float away from me as I moved my head to far corners of the play area)

I really wish there was a full game based on the playroom platforming level. Holy shit that was amazing. They have to know they have a hit there they just couldn't finish it in time right?
