PlayStation VR Launch Thread: Welcome to The Real World

Yeah I didn't realise when I was lifting up to quickly peek around and find a controller, drink etc that I was basically resting the lenses on my greasy forehead. I try and lift out and up a bit more now when I'm taking it off or peaking out from under it.

I adjust it fairly often while playing for extended periods, so I might be inadvertently doing the same thing.

I'm just worried because I've had frustrating experiences with expensive sun glasses before-- I'd use cleaning solution and proper cloth to wipe them down every time I went to wear them, but over time it seemed like no amount of cleaning would get rid of an oily film near the bridge. Didn't affect vision really, but something like this worries me more.

I just keep waiting for the jump scares (they all do it) and just playing a game constantly thinking where it will be is not fun for me.

I guess shooting lends itself by default better to criminals and scary stuff but I would just like a game where I shoot some dart gun or bow and arrow, like Sports Champions on PS3.

I loved that bow and arrow thing.

Also, we need a Time Crisis so we can have a non-horror VR shooter like this.

Outside of some quirky story/setting animations and accompanying voice acting, it seemed to have a fun setting and a good sense of presence, without many issues related to discomfort.

I'm thinking it's one of the more intense experiences, but I don't think most people have tried it yet. We missed being included on the demo disc due to certain...delays outside of our control.

ಠ_ಠ

Yep.

I already have the game, I promise I'll try it soon! :p

bought a whole bunch of games with PSVR; haven't played them all that much (except the 3 I give a bit of a writeup to):

until dawn
VR worlds
superhype cube
Rigs
SuperstardustHD

^ the above, I haven't spent enough time to have solid impressions. I wasn't really big on RIGs but when I played the demo, and double jumped and it made me go woah and somewhat nausea, I knew I wanted the game so I bought it.

Here they lie demo. <-- this demo is horrible and the decision to have the camera shift/left right on the sticks (I think) and how it works = immediately felt unwell. What were they thinking? Jim Sterling bashed the shit out of it in his review and I read it mostly agreeing. The motion in this though.

essentials

thumper
rez
TumbleVR

enough has been said about Thumper and Rez but both are incredible and absolutely wonderful experiences in VR. looks incredible too, not low quality or low res. Thumper does look like it could use a better screen/ps4pro but its very good looking. Rez looks perfect

Tumble VR is incredibly fun and takes what is a block game and that with VR makes this something else. Not quite the same outside of VR.

re: drifiting

Btw, I had horrible screen drifiting (where I was sitting in the middle of the hole and the game was unplayable) with tumbleVR til I went and made the PS4 controller's light bright instead of dim and it all went away. Haven't had issues since.

Really quite happy with the unit. it's really quite incredible that the unit launched with this many games. Haven't spent too much time with games that made me sick. I think Rigs is the game that would be most concerning out of the lot I have. tech is impressive and friends who've been round were all like "woah, this is incredible; especially rez and thumper".

I bought VEV at launch, I'll make sure to try it out next time I put the headset on. There's just too much stuff to get through; I had over a dozen games in my VR folder before my headset got delivered, and I bought a bunch more after playing through the demo disc.

After playing around with the headset since release I have experienced both good and bad.
In fact I was dangerously close to selling my headset as the tracking issues was really taking its toll on me.

However, I really wanted this thing to work so bad, so I read up on the PSVR reddit and in here and tried a lot of different tips and tricks to ease the tracking issues. Suffice to say, the issues are nearly gone. Or at the very least things are good enough.
To get it right I have to do some work, but at least I get to play without getting sick. In fact I went straight to Driveclub VR to test the new setup and I wasn't sick at all.

Played through Rez and Until Dawn in one setting afterwards.
It has been said countless times in here but Rez really is fantastic in VR. You simply have to experience it to believe it.
Until Dawn is actually quite the fun game. It is a on-rails shooter though, but for what it is it delivers in my opinion. I actually struggled on some stages because it was rather difficult. Not really scary except for some spiders which I really didn't like.

Thumper will be my next purchase I think.
All in all I am really glad I gave the headset another shot. Excited for the future now :D

That's what I've been saying! You're Bruce Wayne goddamn it, you can afford to install a few safety-railings around the cave!

LOL yeah. when the elevator's going down and you start throwing batarangs and you realize there's no railing oh man lol.

Make pornhub account
Download 360 VR video
Copy it to FAT32 USb stick, make sure it's in a folder (any name)
Open media player 2.50
Look at 20ft tall low res naked woman
Fap
Take off headset and realise family is standing around you
Leave society

I had some screen drifting with RIGs & cinema mode but overall, great experience.

How is Valkyrie? The demo on VR disc is WAY too short and I can't get a good feel for it. Is it a paid-freemium game? I see it is $60 but has all these credits you can buy. I'd hate to have to feel like i needed to spend money to progress.

I only have RIG, but I think Until Dawn is next on the list.

tracking is much much better for me today. Still a bit turned off at the inconsitency of it, but the highs make the lows worth it.

That's interesting. I wonder how many people having problems have their controllers on dim?

Get to it when you can. it's an embarrassment of riches right now in terms of quality VR experiences on the platform. I'm just worried in particular about people missing all the subtle and not too subtle NeoGAF references. ;)

Stop tempting me to buy it. I've already spent way too much money this past week ;_;

Guys, just got one from my wife today. Im loving it so far.

Bought RIGS and now downloading Driveclub because man, what a demo.

Just one probably stupid question. Is it normal for the VR to look a bit dotty with a Dark screen? Its quite noticeable in Until Dawn but other games as well. It feels like looking for a sky with stars.

If its normal no issues, just wanting a heads up to see if my unit is normal.

Yeah, a lot of folks have mentioned it.

Hmm, I certainly have my controller on the dimmest it can be and I have the drift to the left......I will brighten it now and see if there is any change.

Oh also if I just want to turn on the ps4 and use my regular TV no image comes through unless I turn on the breakout box..... Am I missing something?

Can we talk about terrible the Media Player is for VR?
It's essentially useless. The only thing it does is play 360 degree video. Nothing else
No SBS, Over Under, 3D, or 180 playback. There's also no FOV slider or any other options either. It's like they didn't even try. I've used better VR media players on goddamn iOS and that doesn't even officially support cardboard

yeah. You have to turn on the breakout box for tv image to display. Which I thought was a bit derpy.

Yeah. The tracking/drift in tumble VR would have me literally sitting in the hole (with the platform on my leg) in tumbleVR and the game was unplayable as the controller was out of bounds and it just kept making siren alarm sounds. Changed the controller to bright and the problem went away.

Can't speak on the microtransactions yet but I think this being an arena shooter is a missed opportunity. Of course everybody is circling all the time evading each other and because there are no physical limitations to the spaceships it gets hectic really quickly. You don't have any time to admire the surroundings or truly enjoy the experience. So far I greatly prefer both Rigs and Battlezone from the full price games I bought.
The possibilities for this genre in VR are amazing but for me Valkyrie does too little to deliver. I need to play more though, these are just my first impressions beyond the demo.

Yes, I did buy this thing to look back at my chair, thank you very much :p

VEV is scary! It definitely works. There is an overwhelming sense of scale, especially when other ligeforms pass by. I didn't get any nausea yet.

Is there any consensus as to which headset stand is better between PowerA and Collective Minds?

PowerA
Collective Minds

Even though the Collective Minds is a preorder, it still does ship in 2 weeks, that has to be the better deal imo. Charges 2 Dual Shocks instead of 1, is $15 cheaper, and the Power A says it is sold out at the time and will ship in "1 to 2 Months." I know they will probably have them before 1 to 2 months, but you are going to have to wait on it a bit anyways. I would just go with the Collective Minds.

I know I personally selected the Collective Minds one for my Christmas List.

Humm. But mentioned as an issue or as a feature? Do you have that as well?

Well, not ideal but a side effect of OLED panels. I know the Rift and Vive do something with their panels to reduce this type of OLED artifact, I guess Sony is not doing something as effective (or maybe a trade off of them using a higher refresh panel somehow).

Absolutely love Rush of Blood for what it is - but I'm totally stuck at the end of the hotel level. The birds that fly out from the girl kill - the 3rd wave of them kill me every time no matter what I do. Anyone have this problem or have any tips?

It's pretty amazing how part of the roller-coaster make you feel like your going slow and uphill or moving really quickly.

If you take the game for what it is - a shooting gallery in a haunted location in VR it's really well done.

Another thing I did was make sure the camera was standing in the same height as my eyes. I also used the demo disk calibration instead of the one in the settings as I didn't feel that helped at all. There are multiple threads on Reddit that have users with different solutions. I have posted what helped me. I hope you get to fix yours because I know how annoying that tracking is :/

So here goes...

38 years old, and havent felt this way about gaming in as far back as I can remember. Been waiting a long time for VR, and hell yeah it delivers.

Pre-ordered on amazon, cancelled the day before it shipped, went to best buy friday and found the last launch bundle in the store. Felt guilty the whole way home because I really should have saved the money (the reason i cancelled amazon order in 1st place).

Set it up and man I've been having such a blast. Didn't get to try it, and didn't know how it was going to effect me, but man o man am I impressed. I don't know how much of this will sound like hyperbole but wow, it felt like discovering gaming all over again. The immersion is so awesome. 1st few sessions I was getting a bit queasy, so ive been playing in spurts. Doing so seems to have helped with the mild queasiness, and it feels like my brain is getting used to what's happening.

I dont know if this will help anyone but ... I found that taking the light bar off of dim seems to have help with drifting issues.

Wont spend too much time giving game impressions. But thanks to you guys I went and bought Batman....and.....wow......
Rigs and Battle zone both gave me the most queasiness, so ill probably try them again later this week to see if it really was just that I needed to get my mind used to VR.
All of the demos were impressive in their own way... and holy shit Kitchen...yeah no scary games for me in VR. I know they are just games but still..

I'm too broke to afford anything else till next paycheck, but its between Rez and Thumper(most likely thumper just because its new)

Anyway, all I'm saying is. I love PSVR and i cant wait to see where it takes us!

I don't tweet or Twitter or whatever but isn't there a way to #moreplayroomplatformer? How the hell are they going to know it's just about the most praised piece of software?

Also I feel bad reading about people having things get blurrier as they get closer. When I bring objects closer in Playroom VR or I get closer in Allumette everything gets so sharp.

Reminds me of the bleeding on black the OLED Vita screen suffered from.

It's distracting on loading screens but not too much else. Makes dark rooms feel dusty, I guess

Rigs is awesome. I really want to get a GAF team/community going because I think that game has legs.

I know it has a survival mode and it uses the move... Repability seems like it would be nice.
Brookhaven is badass. The feeling of jamming my revolver into the forehead of a zombie and pulling the trigger never gets old. It's currently my go to Rick Grimes Simulator.

Though I wish there was an option to only have enemies come from in front of you, because the pressing a button to do a 180 degree turn got pretty confusing sometimes.

But yeah if you want a good no frills shooting game, Brookhaven is the best bet right now.

Oh man, so curious now to see this game. If it actually imparts a sense of "damn, that's big," I don't care if it's a blue whale or a paramecium, that sounds intriguing.

Notice how nothing happens until you shoot the heart a bunch? Ignore what birds you can except the few that hit you and every time that door opens, shoot the heart. That is how you kill the girl.

RIGS is such a good game.

It's like how I felt when I first got hooked on Unreal Tournament 99. Simply incredible.

I worry the player base is tiny. Feel like I saw the same 4 players in online play all day.

I tried some of the Reddit stuff and I almost have no issues anymore.
Here is what I tried.
1. Power off the ps4 unplug the camera wait for a minute then plug in and power on.
2. Sit closer to the camera at exactly 6 feet.
3. Do the manual calibration stuff. Settings->Devices->PSVR
4. When it happens turn off and then on the headset.
5. Standing and sitting need two different setups. Either you move or the camera for each situation.

Before I did these things I couldn't finish the Thumber demo because it drifted 90 degrees. I tired the demo again with no drift at all.

Played through "London Heist" a couple of times today with the move controllers.

It was honestly great. It looked good, the controls were accurate, it was fun. Had a friend over and it was his first VR experience, he came away impressed.

Got one question for London Heist:

There's a keypad in the desk, it takes a 4-digit code. Any idea where to find that?

As a sports fan, RIGS has done a better job of the "athlete experience" than every other actual sports game on the market. The commentary isn't great, but with that exception the presentation is fantastic. Little touches, like post game fist bumps from your teammates after a win, make you feel like the star in this futuristic sport.

I would love NFL/NBA/other licensed team DLC with more commentary. 30 seconds left, and you're down by 1 in Endzone. You get the ball and make a push, and the announcer starts going crazy about how the Broncos pilots are trying to tie the match up.

I was thinking it's the
time on the clock
but my move controller kept janking out because of the position I had to reach to in order to use the safe so couldn't input it properly in time.

It'll definitely take a while for the player base to get there. I would expect to see more players on (and after) Christmas this year.

IIRC,
I broke open the locked drawer on the left by hitting it with one of those urn thingys on the desk, there was a paper inside with the number on it.

Does RIGS have a proper single player? I know it supports vs against bots but I have always thought that feature gets super old, super quick due to how limited AI behavior can be.

It does look like it is a visually and gameplay-wise a cool game, but I am not sure I would commit to it over other multiplayer games I'm likely to be invested in over the coming weeks.

So....for those that have played the VR Platformer game....can you answer me a question? Could VR actually be used for the vast majority of hardcore games, particularly third person titles? Even if the VR effect is subtle, it wouldn't necessarily require tons of headtracking to still be immersive.

I'm just trying to conceptualize the next big thing in gaming, and I think VR is so close. PS5 hardware should be able to handle really good 4K graphics at 60 FPS, and by that time the VR 2.0 headset should be around 4K or greater. It makes sense to align next-gen VR with the next console release.

I suspect Sony will launch PS VR 2.0 with the Playstation 5 on the SAME DAY. With most games being compatible. At that point, consumers would have the option to play games in VR or with their TV...but I suspect that if you have the VR headset that would be the preferred way to play.

I realize that most FPS games like CoD need to be re-imagined, but what about third person stuff like God of War or Uncharted? I'm thinking that a lot of games can have subtle VR touches without going full VR in terms of re-inventing mechanics.

I'm looking for a game to buy the full version of, and I absolutely LOVED the Until Dawn demo, are you liking the full game? How many hours have you put into it? Do you think it's worth the cash?

Are you familiar with how soccer works? It's the same deal with divisions, sponsors, tournaments, pro/rel, and so forth. I personally love it but if you're not into sports you may not.
