RIP United Front Games

MUnited83

For you.
I just can't see that when the original Sleeping Dogs was a big undertaking. It's a miracle it even happened.

Would have been a tough call to make a second one, you would need a lot of money to do so.
It would only be a "tough call" because SE has batshit crazy expectations. SE somehow managed to have money to start funding a online version of it. All the money and effort spent on Sleeping Dogs Triad Wars could have gone to the development of a proper sequel on the same engine with well managed expectations.

Square Enix: "Want Sleeping Dogs 2? Like good games that would make total sense to make a sequel to? Well too bad!"

That just makes me angry at Squeenix for foregoing yet another sequel.

LittleBigPlanet Karting had a ton of potential with the track creation of ModNation Racers and the IP of LittleBigPlanet with all its DLC.

I'm still very glad it exists though.

Hope the employees land on their feet.

I'll always remember them for Sleeping Dogs. Shame they never got to expand on that formula because they had all the talent needed to make a fantastic series with that IP.

Le sigh.

Wow that sucks. Smash and Grab didn't even come into early access that long ago. Did think it was a bit soon to have a free weekend, guess the writing was on the wall. :/

Didn't even think it was that bad either.

Man, RIP Sleeping Dogs 2 though. Sleeping Dogs is still one of the best open world sandboxes imo.

What the heck, they literally just release Smash + Grab within like the last month.

Really really sucks.

I can't help but blame SE since they didn't seem to want to allow them to make Sleeping Dogs 2. even though it sold well and MANY people wanted a new one.

Really hope the people land on their feet and find new jobs.

I also just have to wonder though, what about those of us that bought Smash + Grab? I got it like 2 weeks ago, kind of feels weird to buy a game and have it lose all support in 2 weeks, especially an early access game.

So they were taking money for an early access game up until today? One that was released two weeks ago?

That feels questionable. Condolences to the staff.

Dang wanted smash + grab to get a little more optimized so I could play it. It looked fun.

Activision still owns true crime right? After success of sleeping dogs wonder if Activision wood have taken a chance on another one.

Fucking hell. If only Square hadn't squandered their abilities and had 'em work on an actual Sleeping Dogs 2, maybe things would be different :(. Clearly a studio full of talented peeps, hope they can find new jobs quickly

lol Activision doesn't do middle of the road anymore. It's either the triplest A of the triple As or trash licensed games. Sleeping Dogs is neither of those and as such of no interest to them.

I'm blaming Square-Enix for this. You release an open-world game with a strong story, basically MADE for single-player fans, and you tried to turn that into a multiplayer game? What's the logic?

I hate this for UFG and hope all those guys find good jobs soon.

Fuuuuuuuck man, I pray that someone makes a spiritual successor to Sleeping Dogs someday, I loved that game sooooo much.

Sleeping Dogs 2 set in San Francisco with a heavy emphasis on Triads and taking down a Leland Yee type villain will never happen because it isn't Minecraft or roguelike or whatever isn't streamer friendly. If Pewdiepie isn't playing it, you might as well delete the entire project. That's the industry now!

Thanks video games.

I mean, on top of that modern open world games don't really lend themselves to anything less than AAA in terms of production and budget. You can't create reallly create one on the cheap. Look at Mafia 3. A game that clearly had a ton of time and money go into it, and even still you have complaints that it feels rushed. I don't really blame publishers for staying away from those unless you are fairly certain you can turn it in to a huge franchise IP.

I don't see why they would, they're even more cut throat. If they don't think it'll sell lots I don't think they'd bother unless it was one of their licensed games.

I should have clarified that by triplest A of triple As, I really meant super safe and sure to sell several millions in a week.

This sucks so much. They made such an atmospheric game in Sleeping Dogs and i'd have loved to see what they would have done further from there if they had the chance. Imagine what they could do if they put the same care that they put into replicating Hong Kong into somewhere like St Petersburg or Rome.

Yeah, I'm sure "Open world action game" is a tough sell to publishers.

A damn shame.

I played the great Sleeping Dogs during a very special moment of my life, and therefore I will never forget it.

Best luck to those affected.
