Rumor: Shadow of the Tomb Raider leaked [Up: Kotaku says real, by Eidos Montreal]

Man, I don't know why exactly, but I fucking hate the whole characterization of "the" Tomb Raider. I can't put my finger on why, but it just...pisses me off so much I legitimately cannot stand it.

Anyway, I plan on buying Rise on PS4 soon. I liked the first game.

1 is good. 2 is phenomenal.
I honestly thought the first one was better.

The second one doubled down on larger open world areas crammed full of collectibles. The weapon unlocks/upgrades and new items didn't do much for me either. I spent ages finding the upgrades for what I assumed would be the best bow in the game, but it was barely any different and actually worse than the one I'd been using most of the game.

I found the sense of progression and pacing way better in the first game.

This. Persuades me this image is legit - videogames have the worst titles.

Titles that sell. Surveys pick the titles. Just like covers or even locations (for games like Assassin's Creed, Far Cry...). That's also why it's Red Dead Redemption 2 and not Red Dead R-something. Doesn't mean it wouldn't sell better or worse, but that's how they are picked and I wonder why neogaf, the famous video game forum, always feel surprised about titles being "generic".

helped a brotha out on multiple separate occasions!
Shot was taken at the Montreal subway, so maybe not something from the main series but a spin-off like Lara Croft GO?
"Tomb Raider" suggests mainline. "Lara Croft" is what they've been using for the recent spinoffs (LC Go, LC and the temple of Osiris, LC and the guardian of light, LC Reflections, LC Relic Run).

Don't agree. Could never get into Uncharted, mainly due to the cliché characters, but loved the Tomb Raider.

Because I know Tomb Raider is the first series I think of when I think of fresh, original characters :D

Wonder if they'll go Xbox timed exclusive again with this one. I'm guessing probably yes.

Would be the dumbest move they could possibly make... and yet I'm not confident enough that they wouldn't do it to say it definitely won't happen.

Tomb Raider : The Shadow
Tomb Raider : Daddy Issues

I know what you mean, just stick to Tomb Raider : Adventure but suppose that doesn't fit the games nowadays since it's shoot everyone in the face and collect things in random locations. There is no overarching goal to label.

never left the stone age
I wonder what the next games will be called. Maybe next we'll get Epiphany of the Tomb Raider, followed by Journal of the Tomb Raider.

Elegy of the Tomb Raider. Time to reboot it back into something better. I really want to love Rise too, but the forced combat sections are all so terrible. "Let's give the player a lot of healing plants for this section!"

But zero cloth. Can't make any healing items at all. Great game design. The parts where you can actually stealth kill enemies are so damn good that I don't understand whose idea it was to have these forced combat encounters where every single enemy knows where you are at all times. It's so fucking bad in comparison to the rest of the game.

Really, you thought Uncharted's characters were cheesy but didn't have a problem with the Tomb Raider reboot's characters? I mean, to each their own but the supporting cast in the TR reboot were stereotypical, two-dimensional cardboard cut-outs. Uncharted's characters may be clichéd but they at least have some depth and are well-developed.
.

That's all true. But that's the thing, imo. In Uncharted they show up all the time and there is a lot of cutscenes and story exposition. But in Tomb Raider most cutscenes are just with Lara. Which I like more than Nathan (although the turning instantly into a killing machine makes no sense). Nathan is the classic american dude hero, the dialogs are the cliché humor based action adventure summer movies dialogs. I loved Uncharted 4 beta and will eventually get the game just for that, but I really can't get into it. And I don't think I am the only one that feels this way regarding UC.

I didn't say they are good characters. I just like the feeling from Tomb Raider, being alone in a island and not have that much story exposition and cutscenes. Wasn''t this common in the older Tomb Raiders? There were characters but most of the time you were, well, raiding tombs.

Whether it's true or not I can't wait for the new Tomb Raider. According to the hints in RotTR it's gonna be set in
south/central america
, right?

Yup. They use "Tomb Raider: [Subtitle]" for the novels and comics and, if this rumour is true, they're apparently sticking to "....of the Tomb Raider" for the main games.

I wouldn't count on it. People also thought that Rise would be set in North America because the end of the first reboot game hinted at Native American mythology but that obviously wasn't the case. It's also possible that the whole Mexico thing was referencing a plot they'll be using in the comics or novels, rather than the next game. We'll just have to wait and see.

Agreed, the cast was way better in the first one too.

Maybe this time the writing wont be awful
Maybe they'll make characters worth giving a shit about
Maybe there wont be as much useless bloat like level of greek, level of roman, collecting ores, herbs and other shit just give me a focused narrative
Maybe the villains will be good this time around
Maybe Camilla Luddington will learn how to act
Man and how about that story I already don't remember anything about? What was father Croft's problem again?
The post-credit scene was the best thing, such graceful setup for the 3rd game
Oh and raise your hand if at times you would forego doing upgrades at the camp just so you wouldn't hear those cringe inner monologues.

Also, how many people do you guys think legit cried at that
Jonas death fakeout scene? I mean when you can't make us care about a character who's not only been there since the first game but is also one of Lara's closest friends, I think you've got a problem.

I can't wait for Mediocrity of the Tomb Raider, the Third. You've got my axe, Crystal Godnamics.

Yeah most of these things were on my list of what I hoped to see in the second game. Sadly, it was pretty much an exact rehash of the first, replete with all it's awful writing, characters, and bloated survival systems.

I really don't get what people think is so good about these games, because to me they represent pretty much the most cliched and uninteresting aspects of AAA game design. And it's not like I have some vague grudge against "AAA," it's just that everything about this new take on Tomb Raider is so.... middle of the road.

The name seems dumb enough to be true. Had hoped CD would try something new, maybe some day if TR keeps bombing.

I do wonder if Crystal Dynamics have that much breathing room. Tomb Raider only sold a lot at heavily discounted prices, Rise of the Tomb Raider wasn't a great seller and it remains to be seen if PS4 picks up the slack. If anything they probably need another Tomb Raider out sooner rather than later and hope it sells really well from the start or the reigns will go elsewhere for the IP.

And then Return of the Tomb Raider. Then probably Victory of the Tomb Raider, or something. I dunno.

Fall of the Tomb Raider, now that will be depressing. Maybe she actually falls and is dead! then Square Enix gets angry and the sequel is Return of the Tomb Raider. It happens again, ask Core Design.

Whenever I see posts like these about the Tomb Raider games, I wonder if we live in parallel universes. Like, you played Bizarro Tomb Raider and Bizarro Rise of the Tomb Raider and I played the normal ones that are excellent.

Obviously you are expressing your opinion but there are no other games the where fanbases seem to feel the exact opposite of each other so often. At least, not to my knowledge.

I won't get it either. The most mind boggling thing about the first game was how big the budget was and it was barely any better than Uncharted from the a gameplay perspective and worse in every other way.

I've heard glowing things about the sequel, but I also heard those things about the original and its apparently not that different. While I think the gameplay and level design was superior to the Uncharted trilogy, 4 just raised the bar even further. Tomb Raider has always seemed like a "me too" series since the reboot with a flair of edge which at times made it pretty cringe.

I don't have much faith here either, but I do want to give the rebooted series another chance with Rise. I didn't have fun with the original, but maybe if I do with Rise, I can overlook its other flaws better. I won't blame the actors because they need a better script and director to work with, but Luddington really needs to fix that accent of hers.

Best wishes.

Would it kill someone on the team to come up with a name that isn't "Blank of The Tomb Raider"? I swear, imagination is dead in this industry when you can't even come with a decent title.

Ushojax

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
Hopefully we only have to endure one more of these turds before they reboot it again. One day we will get a new Tomb Raider with challenging puzzles and platforming...one day....
