Game Informer: December Cover - Mass Effect Andromeda (not out yet, leaked)

that damn unbuttoned space suit.

You can change your armor.

I hope they recapture the atmosphere of Mass Effect 1. It really nailed the mystery and sort of optimistic isolation. Killer soundtrack is required.

For me, that's more important than story.

Why do we have to save humanity again? I mean, can't they think of a story without main character being the chosen one?

Hype anyway tho...

By "saving humanity" I think they mean trying to carve a space for humanity in Andromeda with limited personel and resources and not necessarily an "end of the world" scenario.

I hope.

From what I understand, the people on the moon in the latest trailer are DudeRyder and FemRyder's parents. DadRyder and MomRyder are professional N7 soldiers, but their kids aren't. DudeRyder and FemRyder are likely wearing the N7 armor because they inherited them from their parents. While the Ryder siblings will be able to fight, they aren't professional soldiers, so it's possible MEA will have a greater focus on diplomacy rather than shootybangbang all the time.

Actually, the universe-saving stuff notably took a backseat in ME2. That game was mostly focused on personal interactions and side-stories and only a few missions directly dealt with the overarching Reaper threat.

And everyone complained that the stakes weren't high enough and the plot didn't get advanced enough.

The lesson here is that people will always complain, no matter what.

I think the problem concerning ME2's "contribution" to the overall plot is that it's really fucking stupid.

Seriously, as far as I am concerned the central underlying ideas of ME2's main story (humanities' magic genes, human reaper) are far sillier than even the color-coded endings in ME3 that people complained about so much.

Will squadies be only old and safe MW races or will we get squadies from Andromeda races too?

Edit: Hell, is there even intellect races in Andromeda? I can't think any case of BioWare even teasing designs of new races

shinobi (aka bioware's resident hype man so take it with a grain of salt) said that the Montreal team wanted to follow ME1 for Andromeda - hence the inclusion of the mako and bigger open worlds (supposedly).

Speculation: From what i've gathered, Andromeda plot is like Interstellar, go to Andromeda and find a new home for humanity, but in Andromeda there's an hostile alien race that won't allow humanity to stay, look at it like the first contact war but without the council mediation.

Then both humanity and that alien race will go after some ancient knowledge/technology, the remnants, to tip the scales on their favor.

Then a 99% sure plot twist.

I'm aware of that, but it's one of those "I'll believe it when I see it" type things for me.

Cover looking boring AF, but I dig the suit from the new main character.

That sounds like a fantastic story set up

Of course there's new intellectual races. It's a new galaxy.

The asari's outfit looks kinda cringeworthy tbh. Why would she dress up like a belly-free tomb raider? And are those boob-pods on the armor? I'm really not someone who usually criticizes this kinda stuff but it really sticks out here to me

I'm super stoked for this game and series. I'm glad it's almost been like a flagship title for the pro lately as well. Hope they go all out with it.

this is the in-game version:

I don't think it's a matter of sexualization, it's just a dumb and weird outfit

100% agree. I know it won't happen, but man I would be so fucking happy if they get Jesper Kyd for this one. His style is the perfect fit for this game.

I can 100% see this being the plot.

The plot twist is that the ancient alien technology won't actually help them and Zemo was just doing it to get all of the races to destroy each other.

Maybe she has an extra pair of lungs connected to her navel for some extra oxygen.

When you find out why she exposes her belly button, you will regret your words and deeds.

I've noticed Neogaf become increasinly pessimistic nowadays, it's a little weird but it doesn't affect me personally.

For instance, lots of criticism on Dark Souls III yet I'm pretty sure it's my GOTY.

Nothing wrong with being hyped about something, shinobi, it just needs to be taken into account. Sorry if it came across negatively.
No worries, I understand, but it's not like I'm telling people to go out and preorder the game. It's genuinely things some developers have said to me. I try not to inflate anything.

Surely there's going to be a collection right, so I can replay these properly? This is one remaster I would certainly dive into.

I'm guessing if there is, 1 won't be included on PS4.

Trust me, your presence here on GAF is highly appreciated and you sharing details is a only positive thing. E.g. the ME1 comment is the one thing that is giving me hope for the project.

I hope they copy the quest design philosophy from dragon age inquisition and have a first area called the hinterlands that you can stay in forever.

I see they haven't learn from ME2 where your character is in full armor, yet your squadmate right next to you have casual cloth and just an oxygen mask in an alien world with (presumably) dangerous atmosphere.

I bought all Mass Effects on day 1 but sadly, I'll wait for this to be out for a bit before purchasing. 2 and 3 were disappointing(specially 2), then I bought DA:I and never finished it due to how dull it was, and that video we saw a bit ago looked a lot like DA:I.

Hopefully this game will be more like ME:1 then I'll buy, otherwise I'll wait for a discount.

I really hope there's at least one Citadel like Hub world. Nothing like the crap and hugely disappointing Val Royeaux from Dragon Age: Inquisition.

I kinda am hoping all characters have an alt-costume for environments like that. Actually, I didn't think about it, but I wonder if the companions have alternate armor in this game.

It's just a 7 word tagline and it already turns me off :/

I mean, is it even really the case that making a game not about a hero saving humanity would sell less?

Yes, got to have that Hero's Journey.

If the player doesn't feel the messiah complex coming on within the first 3 minutes it's likely they will drop the game. The need to feel important and powerful (at least when it comes to motivation to invest in an RPG-type video game) is that strong in the average person. This is typically why you see RPGs start with a bombastic, pre-rendered cutscene.

If you think that's short, in F2P games you have about 30-40 seconds to hook the player or else they bail out. People will literally spend hours downloading a game and then try it for less than a minute.

Watching RPG focus groups for the first level of a game is depressing. To be fair, watching any focus group makes you realize how predictable we really are. You see the same behaviors over and over again and hear the same comments ad nauseum (both positive and negative).

I would hope so considering how well DAI handled companion armors.

I liked first three but overall found the franchise verrated vs what it actually delivered. That said I love a big SF space opera: they just need to dial back the opera side to a challenge that makes sense for foot soldiers, keep the best elements of the original and ditch the not inconsiderable jank that permeated first three.

And please change up their RPG template approach to team build and narrative structure.

But I'm in, concerns and all. Probably.

Heh. I mean, cards on the table, ME2 is my favorite game ever and I love pretty much everything about the entire series, so the fact that we're seeing a lot of the hallmarks of the previous games-- asari squadmate, N7 armor, space fantasy fashion, human main character, plot centered on humanity's fortunes-- to me those are some of the things that make Mass Effect Mass Effect. I'm excited about a fourth Mass Effect game because of its similarities to the first three games, not despite them.
