They were broken so Ive only just seen them now. The first one looks like an eel.

Tintin... :(

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if these images are directly descended from the more insidious blackface characters only evolved to a more safe, and inoffensive one.

I don't think the Nazi just get ownership of an entire style or fashion for the rest of time. I in know way support any of the beliefs but I think from a style and fashion perspective they looked bad ass. Star Wars copied the style for a reason. These girls just look like nerdy girls trying to look badass, in Japan it probably works but will look silly elsewhere. If this band preaches or has some connection to Nazism then this is offside, if they don't then I'm completely fine with it.

Nah, the eel has fish lips like many cartoon fish. Slime doesn't even have lips.

This is what an example of a racist caricature looks like. (Kirby Superstar).

Its possible. But the fact similar types of designs are used in a bunch of random type of characters show how it would be difficult for some to make the connection today.
edit: for the average Japanese person.

I don't think it'd be that difficult to make the connection. LOL Those designs didn't pop out of nowhere, and nothing occurs in a vacuum.

Hell, I think for the average person. The reality is most people are ignorant of American culture's origins with Blackface, Minstrel Shows, and racist Black imagery and propaganda that has spread and influenced the world.

As someone directly affected by the lingering effects of the Holocaust, it's weird seeing people in here praise Nazi uniforms even with the caveat of the style being separate from the atrocities (something impossible to separate IMO).

Perhaps you could read the Academic study I linked to which along with using other research and studies with references "the research project relied on the direct input and feedback from some young Japanese students about their understanding of ganguro. Sixty-six participants from two Japanese universities involved in this research project were given a questionnaire covering the most relevant questions regarding the issues under investigation. In addition, this research project involved several organized discussions among some African American students about their views and attitudes toward ganguro girls. The research findings provide sufficient evidence in support of the assumptions."

Idk

I was in Japan during peak ganguro lol. I can say for sure that actual Hip Hop influenced styles existed during that time, but it looked nothing like ganguro. Most of those ganguro girls didn't know shit about hip hop, and mostly listened to techno from what I remember.

This thread is valuable if only because I learned that the Japan Rising Sun flag is extremely offensive in Asia. Which totally makes sense in hindsight, because of the horrific atrocities Japan's army committed in Asia in WW2. I just never put two and two together on that one.

They are trying to digress. It's as if these people are actually seeing the nazi officer uniform for the first time in their lives.

Nazi uniforms are legitimately cool as fuck, why would you let nazis (who will never rise up again) ruin cool stuff for you? If Hitler played video games, would you stop playing video games to not glorify nazi culture?

Wow. NeoGAF Shit Post of the Year.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
Nah, that was a tiny bit more close to the original:

Shock rockers are tasteless by design, that's a bit different from a generic popstar dressing like a Nazi.

Gotta agree. Plus Mansons whole career has been courted with controversy. Here we are talking about a seemingly run of the mill group on a "family friendly" label like Sony of all things.

Keyakizaka46, a spin-off of the phenomenally popular AKB48 J-pop stable formed by Yasushi Akimoto

I have no idea who they are but I'll take this plus the fact they are with Sony to accept it on face value. So a very popular pop band that most likely has lots of varied aged fans. So yeah, what a ridiculously stupid move to do this.

Wow. NeoGAF Shit Post of the Year.

Yeah that comment. Woah. Either a throwaway account or legit as you said it, one of the "worst posts of the year".

I was surprised Barbarossa didn't get mentioned earlier in the thread because it was the first thing I thought of when I saw that anime girl Hitler posted earlier. I thought Barbarossa had a lot of coverage on nerd sites over the backlash it received for its Kickstarter too, but I might be thinking of Tentacle Bento instead. The game and the follow up El Alamein both have "Historical" versions where the card art is replaced with old photos of tanks and other vehicles.

I looked up the group and searched for other images of them. The group appears to have quite a few different outfit designs, and while there are similarities, those are not Nazi uniforms. I imagine the designer of them was trying to give the girls a vampire or dark look and probably used some of the Nazi uniforms for inspiration. I don't know if it's bad taste or just bad design that the uniforms weren't altered more. I mean as a designer someone should have realized the outfits could be construed as Nazi-esque.

But that has nothing to do with it being a "western" conflict. It's the opposite in fact.
Their very involvement is the root of the ignorance of the general poulace.

Doesn't mean we should give them a pass for bullshit like this.

I never said we should give them a pass.

They need education.

Like, I get it, sometimes people not directly affected by something can look at things with a totally unbiased eye. I'm sure everyone's done it including me with certain symbolism.

But man, it still makes me feel weird. Not necessarily offended because I don't get offended, but weird.

Seems like on Gaf nobody cares about fashion (except the sneakerheads) until it's time to talk about Nazi fashion. So weird.

Really isn't anything to discuss or defend. Sony and the producer found it unbelievable and indefensible. Some news sites are suggesting they might have to disband because of this.

I feel a bit bad for the girls, but AKB48 is a scourge on the industry. Would not hurt to take them down a notch, especially if this was a lame attempt at courting controversy.

In their eyes Japan can do no wrong. It's a cute little innocent country that makes cute anime and playstations so keep your filthy western political correctness to yourself.

I hate the dissonance I get about Nazi uniforms. I mean fuck the nazis to hell, but at the same time their uniforms and fashion is really cool looking. I don't want to say "nazis look cool" because I don't want to glorify them at all, but removed from ideals and horrible actions, the clothes themselves looked really cool.

People in Japan know about Nazis and the Holocaust. They're just dumb about the fashion/symbolism and how offensive it is. It's sort of like how a lot of Westerners aren't knowledgeable about how offensive the Japanese imperial flag is to many people around Asia because of what they did during WW2.

Japanese do not even use swear words in their language. They treat the English 'Fuck You' as something funny.

????

Japanese has "swear words" in the sense that they're vulgar and impolite to say depending on the situation.

As for "fuck", a lot of people understand that it's a "bad" word in English. It's just not a Japanese word so it doesn't really matter. I've actually heard "fuck" being censored on Japanese TV.
