To give you an idea of real-world use, here's the NES Classic hooked up to a (32", I think) TV using all of the included cables. I'm powering it off of the TV's USB plug, to show best-case distance (as in, not having to have the power cable reach to an outlet in another location).

Best-case scenario I think is either going to be playing at a desk, or putting the unit on a coffee table between you and the TV if things are all close enough. Or, you know, getting longer cables / cable extenders. Of course, extending the controller cord's length makes it harder to use the Reset button, which you may be using quite a bit.

This practically ruins the system. Unless you have it hooked up at a desk that you sit at, you're either going to have the console on the floor or extension cords for the controller or a long hdmi cable. It'll be a trip hazard no matter what you do if you have multiple people around plus it'll look like shit. Totally unacceptable by Nintendo here.

What makes it worse is that everything else about this is really cool from the idea to the look to replicating the controller to the price. But the cord issue just messes it all up. There was feedback and worry about this before the system was released and they just chose to ignore it. Good old Nintendo.

That roughly gets me to comfortably holding the controller six feet from the TV, but not accounting for the power plug being in a different location like that image.

Wow, that's so limiting.

Yeah they clearly want to make this as cheap to manufacture as possible.

I encourage the Internet to get as angry as possible over the shortness of the Classic cord, and then not buy one. That way I can hopefully get one, and maybe even several. I'll then sell it to formerly-angry Internetters at three times the price in a few weeks, and still keep one for myself.

HAHAHAHAH Nintendo what the fuck.

This has to be the most poorly designed thing Nintendo has done in awhile.

Poorly designed, or designed to be cheap. Who would have been interested in this box at twice the price?

Nobody. Scalpers will get burned if they try to hoard this thing. It's not worth it at $60, so I doubt many would pay more than that.

Slightly bummed there is no stretch/16:9 mode.

Why? That would ruin the look of the games.

I myself wouldn't want to play the game stretched to 16:9 ratio. However, I can think of one situation where the option might be useful.

I believe that a few pages earlier in this thread, someone mentioned the idea of connecting the system to a composite monitor using a converter to convert the HDMI output to composite. However, some responses indicated that this might be impractical, because of the way the system prepares the screen image for 4:3 or "pixel perfect" mode to display on an HDTV.

The system likely already outputs a full 16:9 image (at 720p or 1080p), consisting of either the 4:3 or "pixel perfect" screen surrounded by black borders. If you were to use a converter to fit the image to a 4:3 screen, then you would compress the entire output. That means the 4:3 or "pixel perfect" screen, plus the surrounding back borders, would be compressed. Your 4:3 screen would show a "squashed" image with black borders around it.

If the system had the option to fill the 16:9 screen, then the converter would (in theory) squeeze it back to 4:3 ratio. The result would be a "normal" image that fills the 4:3 screen, with no borders.

Forgot this was coming out. I put my name on a reserve list at my local GameStop. I'm figuring they are getting a very limited amount. So I'm probably going to be outta luck when it comes to getting one.

Still think this is going to be widely available for the holiday season. I was going to get one, then I realize it would only be on display and I would never really play it. I already have ways of playing most of these games.

So I'm going to get one as intended, for my dad who hasn't play videogames since the NES days.

It's more than 50% off the Virtual Console counterparts, and in HD.

The normal price is worth it. But not going out of your eay to get one.

All the games I'd want to play on this thing, I already have on my WiiU and Wii VC. And I barely paid anything for them. They were all pretty much gotten with promotions and Club Nintendo coins and stuff.

Thanks. Seeing it set up like that... Yikes.

Like you say, the only way this works is if you're putting it up on your computer monitor at your desk, or something like that. That's the only way I can envision this working (kind of like how I can use my PS3 controller while it's hooked up with a short little USB cable at my computer; it's all right there anyways so cable length wouldn't matter) Even with a coffee table you'd be tripping over that stuff the whole time.

Great. Your personal valuation of this device has nothing to do with whether or not the market perceives this product as a worthwhile purchase at $60.

And to be fair, the fact that this device represents a significant savings over buying the games individually on the Virtual Console doesn't mean all that much either, as the consumer the NES Classic is intended for probably doesn't even know the VC exists.

Damn, Amazon Germany just cancelled my order of the second controller because they don't know if and how many they get. :-(

What's with the defensive attitude? Does it bother you that much, that maybe this thing may not be the hot holiday product people in this thread are making it out to be?

I mean people are acting like this is a new console launch, instead of the Switch next year.

You're definitely reading me the wrong way. A disagreement doesn't mean defense.

I couldn't care less if this product is a hot holiday item or not. I'm not a fanboy.

I just saw a YouTube video opening and I am shocked by the cord length, no go for me with that cord and I was super excited for this to play with my kids.....Unacceptable!

Now that Nintendo has said they aren't doing preorders for the mini, have no doubt this *WILL* be the *HOT* "toy" this Christmas. If you see one in the wild, I'd grab it.

Well that's good but still unacceptable that Nintendo would release this with such a short cord, im not 10 yrs old anymore sitting in my beanbag chair a couple feet away from my 25 inch TV

You realize it's a novelty emu box sold for dirt cheap, right? I think you also have to get up and hit the reset button to change games too. So, your grown ass self, sitting 10 feet away from your 65" TV will have to get up back and forth to switch games anyway.

Ouch at that cord length
What a bummer
Oh Nintendo

Hopefully I can just go into a GameStop next Friday right at opening to pick one up, I'm not camping for this shit

Apparently some GameStop stores are doing "reserve lists" so you might want to call yours in advance to see if they are or if you can just walk in at opening.

So then I should not plan on something at Amazon?

My personal recommendation: if you want the NES Classic Edition, call your local gaming or other store before that day. See when they will start selling (midnight? day of?) and if they're not accepting any pre-orders go when they start selling and purchase it there.

Apparently some stores (at least, some GameStop stores) are doing "reserve lists" so you might want to call yours in advance to see if they are or if you can just walk in at opening.

If you want to try your luck online, there is a tracker with browser alerts here:

I expect it to sell exceptionally quickly unless the stock way outweighs demand, which seems unlikely even if Nintendo has managed to produce enough since the unveiling to meet demand which IMO isn't necessarily likely.

That's nice.

Apparently it's not for you.

You may be surprised to learn that there are lots of people out there who aren't you.

I don't need one either, but I won't deny that it's a fantastic idea, as a marketing tool, a nostalgia piece, and a great value for someone who actually wants to play all of those games on a modern TV for far less than the cost of buying all those cartridges.

In the Giantbomb quicklook they seem to have taken the player names and numbers out of Tecmo Bowl. Have fun playing as the great mysterious Los Angeles RB.

I'm thinking about picking this up, and hoping enough people do so as well so that Nintendo decides to bring a SNES-mini to market a year from now! Man, that would be really sweet!

I just watched the Ars video. Is the CRT filter seriously emulating dot crawl? It looks like a damn composite filter. If that was an accurate representation it's incredibly unfortunate.

Maybe it's just me, but I kinda like it... reminds me of the tiny 13" TVs my friends and I used to play this and the Master System on back in the '80s. Composite if we were lucky, too... I think a lot of TVs back then still required RF switches.

Controller cable length is outrageous.

Why the hell would they do this? What's the point? Surely someone over at Nintendo looked at the concept kit and said "yo listen dude, how close to the tv do you think people sit these days?"
