So my wife and I could watch this in 2D for $23 or in IMAX 3D for $41. That's an insane difference. For somebody who normally hates 3D, is it worth it?

3D literally causes pain in my eyes and yet I would say it tremendously heightens the experience in this case.

However, with a price difference this enormous it's ultimately up to you to decide.

Thanks. The $23 is for a matinee showing, but sadly the IMAX 3D stuff doesn't get a matinee discount.

I clicked away as fast as I could when I read
the words Dark Dimension and Dormammu, so that sucked out any sense of surprise for me.

I mean, I still don't know the context, but still...

Dormammu is the big bad. It's like knowing that
Thanos shows up
in Infinity War.

Oh, that's not such a big spoiler! Both are only referenced in passing, neither actually show up.

Don't believe his lies.

In my seat for IMAX 3D! I got a free poster, too! :D

My theatre is super full. Looks like more people than aou and civil war. Not as packed as guardians though.

i really didn't expect to like it so much. i'm kind of shocked that the studios put faith in a small-budget horror movie director and he did such a fantastic job on this big movie. And I felt that Benedict is to Doctor Strange what Robert Downey Jr. is to Iron Man. He's perfect. Finally, it's sort of hard to make magic interesting in movies because there's been so many movies with magic, but this film made it feel fresh and cool. I give it an: A

Has Marvel ever gone for a big budget director?

That's just straight up standard 2D, not IMAX or anything? That price is insane, I watched this today on a huge screen for €4.99. I thought it was a solid film, Age of Ultron soured me on the MCU to the point I didn't bother with Ant-Man or Civil War but I think this might have won me over again, final third falls flat a little but other than that it's a solid film.

Saw it in IMAX.

It is a very nice looking movie.

It was also pretty boring and had flat jokes.

Also very disappointed with how much they glossed over his training.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?
Saw it tonight and loved it. Probably one of the best Marvel movies IMO.

The
reverse fight
was extremely creative and something I'd never seen before. The special effects in general were awesome.

In the theatre now.

IMAX 3D.

Let's gooooo

Did you see it at the Scotiabank Theatre? If so we were at the same showing :p

Loved it - my second fave origin story right now (a close second). I only wish they'd have made it seem like his training took longer. That part felt rushed.

Rhodey's
not in the Army.
Maybe "some army guy got a crushed lower spine due to some experimental exo-skeleton" is cover to hide the fact USA backed "War Machine" is paralyzed, or it's just Strange's civilian assistant not knowing the difference between branches.

It's too similar to what just happened in Civil War for me to think it's unrelated...but maybe it is.

Me when Strange gets fucked up by The Ancient One (that exact scene in the trailer):

5hr78wnqm3cx.gif

The movie was a ride, but I appreciate that it's sheltered from the wider MCU other than the name drop of the Avengers and Avengers Tower visible in New York. In some ways, it feels even more detached than Ant-Man.

Talent brought their A-game. I particularly liked Tilda Swinton and how she's able to keep sort of the same tone through serious and humourous moments. The Ancient One isn't portrayed as completely stoic, but appropriately reserved.

Benedict Cumberbatch brought some fire, and you know he can really run with the role. I really cannot picture anyone else in the role, and I'm glad they waited on him instead of moving forward without him. The American accent was jarring from the first trailer, but it's a nonissue from the start of the movie. Probably because I was used to hearing it a lot at this point lol.

The story was good, and you just can't avoid an origin story with Doctor Strange. It isn't just an origin story for him specifically, but a story to introduce another facet of the MCU.

It really makes me appreciate the MCU even more to think that we had Civil War earlier this year, and Doctor Strange now - completely different in tone but within the same universe. Dat world building.

I'll write up more when I think it over some more. But initial thoughts have been "DAMN that was awesome." Might watch it again soon, but probably in just a regular theatre.

The new Marvel Studios fanfare and title sequence is awesome. A bunch of people in my showing started clapping when it started up lol

I just saw it, 9/10 for me.

Positives:
* Refreshingly creative theme and visuals.
* I felt Swinton and Cumberbatch nailed their lead roles.
* Enough humor to prevent it from being dark and dreary.
* Even with the nearly 2-hour runtime, it kept me interested the whole way through.

Negatives:
* There was one scene with super fast seizure-inducing flashing colors, not a big fan.
* Villains had iffy motivations, which is kind of a common problem.

I got back from the film about an hour ago And I gotta say, I really enjoyed the film. As for specifics...
  • The main cast really brought their A-Game. Of course Benedict Cumberbatch did fantastic as Doctor Strange, & Tilda Swinton was great (& surprisingly complex) as The Ancient One. Mordo was well-utilized in the film, & I ended up liking Wong a lot more than I initially expected. Rachel McAdams' character was used more than I expected, & she also did great with what she had. But of course, the surprise star of the show was
    the Cloak of Levitation
    .
  • The story itself was more-or-less what you'd expect from Doctor Strange's origin, but with a few interesting twists thrown in (like
The Ancient One drawing power from Dormammu to keep herself alive
    ). Speaking of
    Dormammu
    ...
  • I didn't expect to actually see Dormammu speak in the movie, & I expected a bit more fire (literally). Overall, the scene where Strange literally put Dormammu in a time loop was funnier than I expected. Hopefully we'll see Dormammu take a more physical form like in the comics (namely his recent design, also seen in the MvC3 games) in the sequel. Also, did anyone figure out who voiced Dormammu?
  • Speaking of time, I have to give major props to the 「B I T E T H E D U S T」rewind fight in Hong Kong. All the fights in general were pretty trippy, but this one in particular really took the cake. Technically it was a mix of 「B I T E T H E D U S T」& Crazy Diamond (with the whole fixing-the-city part), but you get the idea.
  • A tiny note, I see that Strange & Ben Urich (god rest his soul) have the same taste in music. It's super-early in the film, & you'll know it when you hear it.
  • As for the villain, Kaecilius was better than I expected, but not as good as I had hoped. Though in a way,
it was the twist about The Ancient One that elevated Kaecilius' character & his motivation.
Overall, don't expect Kingpin/Purple Man levels of greatness from Kaecilius, but he's above the average MCU villain.
  • As for the visuals, I'm not sure if I can say anything that hasn't already been said (either by myself for the preview or by anyone else here on GAF). It's literally like Steve Ditko's art come to life.
  • The pacing was pretty on-point. I was a bit disappointed early on that it was only 2 hours flat, but the movie definitely made every second count. It definitely didn't overstay its welcome.
  • Concerning the two post-credits scenes,
I'm guessing the mid-credits scene is directly pulled from Thor: Ragnarok like how the Ant-Man mid-credits scene was pulled straight from Civil War (plus, I love how Doctor Strange actually wears gloves like he did in the classic comics). As for the post-credits scene, I was expecting Mordo to make a deal with Dormammu, but having his purist ways drive him over the edge is a great way to make him go bad without betraying what was established about Mordo early on (or should I call him Baron Mordo, now).

Overall, I give this movie a 9/10 (this score may chance as I give more time to mull over my thoughts on the movie, perhaps with a second viewing). The movie knew exactly what it set out to do & delivered in a great way. As for the ranking, my Top 5 now would be...
  1. Captain America: Civil War
  2. Guardians of the Galaxy
  3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  4. Doctor Strange
  5. The Avengers
Like my score, this may chance as I give myself more time to think about the film.

Also, one last thing,
where in New York is the Sanctum Sanctorum? It kinda looked like it was in Hell's Kitchen, but I don't want to assume (in my NYC visits, I've only been to Times Square).

Just got home. Absolutely LOVED everything from the movie. Strange is one of my favorite characters and has been since I read Triumph and Torment when I was getting into comics and I waited eagerly for this movie since it was sort of teased in Winter Soldier. I was not disappointed, it was just flat out FANTASTIC.

This is pretty much exactly how I feel about everything except I rank the original Iron Man above The Avengers.

Movie looks amazing and I think Marvel put themselves in a tough spot to match. Visually it's hard to see any Marvel movie beat this anytime soon, unless Wakada flat out looks super imaginative and fresh. So whatever comes after this might be a bit of a disappointment.

Damn. Doctor Strange is better than it had any right to be. I think it'll land pretty high on my list. The climax was very "Dr. Strange".

Besides Doctor Strange 2, Guardians Vol. 2 probably has the best chance at rivaling Doctor Strange's visuals purely due to the potential of intergalactic visuals.

Currygan

at last, for christ's sake
gonna go on sat

bitch sister already went and spoiled me some scenes, but since she knows arse about Marvel comics she misspelled all the names so I'm gonna go fresh

Holy shit, this movie looked CRAZY in IMAX 3D. I'm usually down on 3D movies, but the moment Strange meets the Ancient One I got my money's worth. Maybe the best use of 3D I've seen. Without a doubt top 3.

So...
Dormamu in Avengers 4? They said it wasn't connected to 3 much anymore, so maybe? Sounds to quick to be fighting another that of that scale seeing all the build up Thanos is getting.

You might want to put spoiler tags on that. This isn't the spoiler thread.

I really enjoyed this a lot.

As everyone has already stated, the visuals are insanely awesome, probably the most imaginative I've ever seen in a movie. The Ancient One was bad ass and the cloak of levitation was really cool.

I really didn't know a lot about Doctor Strange before this movie but now I'm a big fan and I'm really excited not only for a sequel but how he will impact the MCU going forward.
