Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite announced (PC/XB1/PS4, 2017) [Update: Info In OP]

jon bones

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
Why would anyone expect the first woman of fighting games to not be in a versus game?

seriously - this game is going to get a lot of mainstream exposure

people don't want chun replaced by an sfiv newcomer they don't know

And that is the entire point.

You know what's going to move this game off shelves and get it to sell like gangbusters? The Marvel license, the character roster, some flashy graphics, and enough single-player modes and/or unlockables to satisfy whatever "content" metric is laid out by the button mashers with short attention spans who aren't really out to compete in the first place.

The idea isn't to merely sell to a bunch of copies. If they don't fuck it up like they did Street Fighter V, they will do this either way.

The idea is to keep people playing and join the FGC. Capcom is, for better or worse, entirely basing their fighting game stuff around esports. Getting more people into it is the long term goal.

If the game is complex enough to intimidate a lot people out, and I'd argue Marvel 3 was, they have less upside here.

The finer points of the gameplay literally do not matter in this regard. That is why it is painful to hear that the core aspect of the series that set it apart from all other major fighting games is being nuked to appease an audience for whom it doesn't make a difference in the first place. I ultimately wouldn't give a shit how "dumbed down" the game might be otherwise. They could strip out all traditional Hadouken-style motions for all I care if that's what they think it'd take. But if it's not going to be a real team game anymore, then they sure as fuck better make up the difference in some regard so that it's still distinct. I'm not terribly hyped about King of Fighters Cross Tekken at the moment.

I'm not too concerned about the hype level of current fans. At this point, you know so little about how it functions or plays that you can only offer vague concerns over it's direction - not actual informed criticism.

Even now, I'm prepared to bet you'll wind up giving the game a shot.

So first I hear assists were out completely, and then someone in the FGC tells me they are in but in a different way. Is this legit info or am I being honeydicked?

Seems like the game is early enough that a lot of fundamental shit could change in any case.

anyone else not find MvC3 hard to follow?
it really isn't if you actually spend the time to play it but i hear the complaint from folks who have issues w it often enough for it to probably be a real issue to some degree. i think its pretty easy to tell the general idea of whats going on without the knowledge of the whys or details

assists change so much at every design level that i cant see it happening. itd be the equivalent expecting everyone to suddenly getting an airdash or something during sf5's beta

Hmm, well in that case I'm not sure what someone would gain by tricking or ah honeydickin ido into believe this game actually does have assist

.

Chun-Li is boring as hell in Marvel.

Though if they gave the entire cast TvC style air-dashes at minimum, that'd be a start. TvC Ryu was the most fun that character has ever been in any game.
Yep. That bit of extra mobilty made him a beast.

TvC Chun was pretty fun, too. Probably the only time since XvSF that I actually enjoyed using her in a Vs. game.

I still say there won't be assists like in MvC1. Where you could have nonplayable characters such as jubilee. Assists i'm still betting on being nothing more than calling your one teammate out.

The best part about all this is that they clearly haven't decided on anything besides 2v2, no assists, and gems

This game is coming in hot when it releases just like SFV, isn't it

It's weird as shit suddenly hearing that Marvel 3 is a hard game to get into when for the longest time, it got a lot of flack for being a "scrub friendly game".

Based on what? Them not specifying every single mechanic the game has in its reveal? Because that was never gonna happen.

Yeah Chun is boring in Marvel I don't want her in. Same goes for Akuma, put Shin Bison and Rashid instead.

Gouki will overshadow Ryu anyway.

Chun Li and Akuma have been in basically every marvel chars vs capcom chars game so I doubt they'll miss this one especially since they can port their animations from umvc3 hd.

Akuma actually wasn't in MVC1.

With Wolverine seemingly out of the picture (for now anyway), Ryu and Chun-Li are the only characters to have perfect attendance in the Versus series.

The characters revealed so far and that rumor about the "huge" roster imply that Capcom's not going to throw away characters that already have finished assets if they can help it. Chun-Li's probably in because she's been a Vs. series staple for a long time, and MvC:I being willing to reuse assets means she's something of a sunk cost and that her inclusion will not have come at the cost of another character.

Edit: Wolverine would also have a perfect attendance record were it not for the Fox/X-Men ban.

What about Spider Man?

EDIT: Unless you meant ALL the versus games, not just Marvel.

Morrigan deserves a special mention for being in all of the Vs. Capcom games (since she's obviously not going to be in the Vs. Street Fighter entries). She's in Marvel vs. Capcom, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Capcom vs. SNK, Capcom vs. SNK 2, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, and Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Only Ryu, Chun-Li, and Morrigan appear in all of those titles.

Not a Capcom-developed game but she's also in SNK vs. Capcom Match of the Millennium for NGPC.

Morrigan needs a captain falcon outfit, for now being in more VS games than actual games in her series and now probably more known for that.

That's true, though I still count the Vs. Street Fighter games considering they still basically are the first Versus games that paved the way for all of this.

Even MVC2's opening includes them in its little recap of the series, and it considers itself "The 4th VS. installment".

But then again the announcer in MVC3 says on the CSS "Marvel vs. Capcom 3! That's right, the third chapter!" so I dunno.

I'm pretty sure X-Men characters will be in the game, specifically Wolverine and Magneto. They wouldn't be using 'curley mastache' in their tweets and posts if they were just gonna abandon those characters.

One more Smash Bros game needs to come out before CF has been in more Smash games than F-Zero games.

6 F-Zero games with Falcon

F-Zero
X
GX
AX
GP Legend
Climax

5 Smash games with Falcon

64
Melee
Brawl
4 3DS
4 Wii U

Never underestimate Marvel's pettiness

I could be wrong but the way Mike and Bill from Marvel Games have been talking it doesn't sound like its a consideration for this game. And as Neoxon has said, X-Men characters are being added to CoC again.

I would guess that since these games exist outside any canon (and are just games) they don't care as much right now. (They did before of course.)

it's melee all over again.

only after brawl came out and sakurai gave the game shit for being "too difficult" did melee SUDDENLY become this hard game that NEEDED to be toned down. christ.

People look at videos of top level play from Evo Marvel 3 top 8 and go "OMG this game is crazy, I can't even tell what's going on! How do people play this shit!" and somehow that becomes the new normal for the game. Now Marvel 3 has the perception of being insane, fast, hard to learn and impossible to follow for the average player because not everyone can move with Magneto like F Champ can.

Marvel and DC going head to head on video games front looks like it with injustice and mvc4. You think mvc4 can hang with injustice when it comes to financial success? I still think injustice will outsell mvc4 by a mile. With capcoms name attached to the project might turn away a lot of casual players.
I think Disney is cautious about this games success thats why it looks so low budget compared to Injustice. The graphics alone have tremendous difference.
