NPD - PS4 was the top selling console of November 2016

The fact that TLOU Part 2 exists is enough to sway people to buy a PS4 now if they are looking to buy a console. Masterful marketing.

What? You seriously think a promo video for game that probably wont come out till 2019 or 2020 are going to convince people to buy a PS4 today? Wishful thinking if anything. Granted the game is going to sell gangbusters, but there is nothing that I would define as "masterful" marketing.

Because MS "deserved" to win, whatever the fuck that means. People just cannot seem to grasp that people see different values in the consoles. I still remember GameFAQs circa 2014 and all those "How is Sony winning? They have no games!" threads.

Those threads were not exclusive to GameFAQs. We were getting them in 2016.

Yeah. I think that there's not a correlation between E3 announcements and console sale boosts, so i doubt it would matter here also

Is Uncharted 4 gonna be the biggest exclusive to date this gen? Those bundle numbers gotta be padding the stats

Yea something as dope as the TLOU can sway u into getting a console much sooner than u want too.

Ahh good point and one I made in that famous thread as well. It just didn't make sense to me that an XB1 owner would be a proponent of UHD or 4k TV's, the main function of the console which is gaming hardly does 1080p on any major release.

To fuel how important UHD was just so odd, since there were hardly any UHD blurays on the market either.

Ha lol, but most of these UHD proponents didn't even have 4k TV's. Some couldn't even tell the difference between 720p and 1080p weeks before... I'll tell you something, there's no way I'd have bought a 4k tv to hook up to an XB1-S. However, some spoke like they had XB1S hooked up and they were in gaming glory, even when most titles were at 900p.

Anyway, I think PS4 winning was clear. People were just waiting for the Pro to launch to buy one, especially since it was only $100.00 between the Pro and the OG for substantial benefits on the upside. One thing is certain, there is a market for bot PS4 models and I think Slim will still do pretty well these holidays, but I'd wager that Pro will have the bigger numbers for the holidays over slim.

Yeah, I seriously doubt that UHD will even come close to Blu-Ray sales even years down the track. The movement towards streaming and digital media is real and strong. Physical formats are evidently becoming more niche.

That said, selfishly I would love if my PS4 Pro played UHD discs. I would probably only buy a handful over the next several years, but it's sort of frustrating having a 4K TV without being able to showcase it to the fullest extent (4K streaming services suck in comparison, and true 4K files are way too big to download for me). As a business decision? I think it makes sense not to include playback.

On the bolded, though, I have to disagree. I think price is ultimately king and doubt Pro sales will come near Slim (but it will still sell well enough).

I was but a 1 year old baby when it released! :p I also ended up watching a bunch of older Disney movies, but even they feel the effects of time. Especially so when they keep on making quality movies every other year, new fans can just focus on the newer stuff.

In any case, super off-topic lol

Yeah. It all started when I asked the meaning of a gif. :D

What you experience as a child often holds up better than what you experience as an adult. Especially if it's an older release, and you're very late to the party.

Wonder if it sold enough to wipe the gains the XB1 made in the last 4 months, I know it already happened in the UK, so it wouldn't be crazy. Any idea if/when we'll get numbers?

As Toki commented, Gamefaqs wasn't the only site getting those kind of comments everytime Sony announced the sales of the PS4. There were a ton of here too ranging from "undeserved" to "what are those people playing?"

Did I miss something? Thought Xbox did well couple months back in UK, like really well?

Difficult to know at this point.
Aqua was going to share November and December simultaneously in January.
But then she got legally threatened by NPD and cancelled her twitter profile.
Don't know is she'll be able to come back to share numbers.

Outside of hardcore gamers like we here on Gaf, the general public does not even know TL2 even exist.

I think there is too much stock being put into games that are announced 2-3 or more years out on both sides. Sony is recently more into doing this and I think it is just a move for brownie points. It is going to be what 2 years soon of the famous big trio announcement of Last Guardian, Shenmue 3 and the FF Remake and all this time and only Last Guardian, which has had a 9+ year birthing process has made it out. Yeah, people went crazy and people acted like it was the 2nd coming, but in reality how much has it really impacted anything other than "reactions" at the time of the reveal of these three games?

Anyways, it will be nice to get actual numbers. I am just hoping that both Sony and MS have positive YOY growth, if sales are down YOY compared to last year that is not a great sign for the industry. Also wondering what the gap was in sales, I am going to assume it was a pretty close race which is a big win for everyone in the industry including us gamers if that is the case. YOY growth and attachment rates are important numbers as this will really show how strong the industry is. If MS/Sony is able to have growth in November/December, then we have the Switch in March, it will make the industry even healthier which is great for all of us.

Yeah if the gap was considerably big then you're right. Are we getting any numbers soon?

I wouldn't compare the Xone S with the Pro tho. I might be wrong but the Pro is more in line with Scorpio and not Xone S.

X1 S is a new console. Has ever so slightly better specs,HDR and UHD drive. The original doesn't have these features.

I said if you are looking to buy console now then it becomes a factor in your decision assuming you do not plan to buy multiple consoles. I didn't say people were going to run out and buy a PS4 specifically for that game right now. Not sure why this concept is so hard for some of you to understand.

That's false. There are so many people in Gamestops talking about it. I was in this past week putting more money on my Horizon preorder, and the clerks and people in the store were talking about PSX.

Sony has December on lock. They sold out of the FFXV LE consoles. While not significant it adds a bit extra, plus they sold more on cyber Monday too.

Funny how it went from Sony needing to react to price drops to MS being the one reacting to Sony's price drops these past two holidays.

I am not sure you are speaking about the same people.

Too bad we won't get any numbers any time soon.

Closing the gap from 1.8 million to 1.5 million isn't stopping anything.

It's more like a runner running 20 laps around a guy and then stopping for a bit to watch them catch up.

I like this analogy.

The PS4 had an insanely good BF here, best in PlayStation history I believe. They are still pushing the Slim really hard too so wouldn't be surprised if it's still increasing.

Xbox won by 1500 units in September and 25k units in October.
PS4 outsold them by more than 67k units in November, 50k just during BF week.

I feel this goes over a lot of people's heads. Barely scraping out a monthly win is meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

So the general public doesn't include any of the 50 million + gamers out there who know about the last of us or uncharted?

Because there are other places out side of gaf where people go. Think about all the pax east, PSX, comic cons. All get coverage all have people talking, and have people who were there talk to their friends and family.

You must have missed the massive thread and other think-pieces.

Eh I think it's a bit early to dismiss it as a total non factor. I still think it was a baffling decision myself.

They can't actually have believed it, I assume most were joking.

Isn't the 4k adoption rate for TVs like 1%?

Nope it's actually fairly high and rapidly growing. I'm sure 4K tv marketshare got a hefty surge this past month too. There is still a lot of confusion about HDR thigh which I think may be hitting adoption rates more than some would care to admit.

UHD sales are a whole other story. Seems like most of the mass market has made the switch over to streaming services now a days. But it'd still be a nice feature to have the option for it IMO.

I guess overhearing comments at one Gamestop is the "pulse" of the industry according to you. People talking about PSX are more the hardcore gamer, not the casual market. I just asked over PSN 5 of my friends asking them what PSX was and none of them knew what it was. Overhearing people at ONE store is not the pulse of the industry. I think you are putting way too much stock into an event targeted for the hard core gamer and the footage was made to serve that select group. Game is far out that it does not make an impact other than "oh fuck" moments when it was announced/shown. In about 2 years when we are hopefully within 6-8 months from release is when shit gets real with that game.

Well, this shows that being reactionary isn't always necessary. Follow your goals and stick to them. Especially in the position Sony is in. All the panic some posters had, all the outrage over the UHD, etc... It puts into perspective how microscopic some of the stuff here is relative to the market itself.

Eh I think it's a bit early to dismiss it as a total non factor. I still think it was a baffling decision myself.
When would be a good time to make that judgement than? I think the PS4's continued success speaks for itself.

The last of us 2 announcement was the number 1 trending topic of Facebook. I know it's Facebook but think of all the likes/shares/views. People definitely know about that game.

How can I argue with such a scientific survey? Did you happen to ask them if they know what YouTube or the Internet is as well?

The fact that people are trying to argue differently is absurd.

Sony just released a new console. If there was no Pro MS would have probably won their 5th month in a raw. It's still amazing how MS managed to turn things around in the US and only be beaten due to a new console release.

You can look at it that way, or you look at it like it took MS releasing an updated console plus Sony announcing an updated console (which caused people to hold off buying the standard PS4) for them to win a few months in a row.

But who cares both are doing well. I bought an xbox Ones to play uhd discs.

My point exactly. My facebook feed had tons of my friends talking about playstation after that weekend.

Did people around here really think the lack of a UHD blu-ray player would hurt Sony that much?

I would also take a guess that most of the people saying that, didn't even have one UHD bluray in their collection.

Never mind having UHD Blu Rays in their collection, I bet they didn't even have a 4K TV in their home.

Haha.
That last comment especially.

Except the Xbox for the past three months?

It would have been absolutely embarrassing for them to lose November. This is expected. December will be interesting.

The last 6 weeks sales in Japan alone cancelled out the gains MS made in NA.

If Sony get a similar sized gap to 2015 they'll have erased the 'pre-season' gains of MS in two months.

Well u just did Sony job for them by letting those 5 be aware of PSX. I think it's called word of mouth

Yea TLOU2 has entered the mindshare. This shit is all over twitter etc. Sure hype for it will go dormant since it won't be out for a while, but when they that marketing gets rolling people are going to be hype.
