NPD - PS4 was the top selling console of November 2016

Why do I keep seeing this like some Pro MS strategy now? Do we care that Marvel teases movies that won't come out until 2018? As long as it's awesome, I don't think so. MS simply doesn't have enough to show more than likely, I think them saying they are announcing games close to release is just PR for fans looking at how many titles Sony announced and tweeting Phil.

I'm not attributing good or bad to it.

I'm just saying that with MS's portfolio of games not being bigger than Sony or Nintendo, they'll be hard pressed to do their own PSX without being willing to announce more far-off games.

Hahaha I just saw this album cover for the first time like 3 minutes ago because I googled the name of a producer on a bandcamp album I liked (new Skrill Meadow album). Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon working overtime!

Could it be Sony's plan to not have UHD drive in PS Pro at launch but next year when Scorpio launches they are going to launch a new model with UHD drive to 'enhance' its value?
Naw. this would be a mistake. Their advantage next hyear is a potential big pricing advantage between the pro and Scorpio.

Will the 10 people who care so much about UHD Blu-ray just buy a Xbox One S or standalone player & be done with it.

PS4 doesn't need UHD Blu-ray, UHD Blu-ray need PS4.

Oh ok...gotcha

I think they might as well do it though. It generates hype, and when you haven't heard from a game in a while, it's not like it being introduced a year later hurts the initial reveal.

PSX itself might not make people go out and buy a PS4, but maybe preorder TLOU2? It's just another way to build up your brand. Exclusives are still important even though they take a back seat to 3rd parties

Precisely. This poster didn't pickup on something I subtly threw in my post, which he was responding to - MS hasn't had an event where they announced software since E3 2016. Its been 6 months, and judging by how MS operates, we likely won't see them appearing & announcing more software until E3 of next year.

Going by who MS normally works & partners with, its hard to say just 'where' announcements will be coming from from their 1st party studios, but its not like the list is massive to begin with. Unless MS opened a studio, or secured a few 3rd party exclusives, things are gonna be interesting software-wise come E3 next year.

What im trying to say if you can buy or afford two consoles for a while. What do you think the majority would choose?
Based on my experience and the people i know they almost always buy a nintendo and ps4 or a xbox one.

It's rare that i know someone that has both ps4 and xbox one.

Its ok if people disagree with me though :)

I've never really understood this line of thinking. It seems to imply every gamer wants to access as wide a spectrum of games as possible. That might be the case here on Gaf, but in the general population you'll find people want to play games similar to what they already enjoy

if anything MS might strip it out of the Xbone S and launch an even slimmer version...

And while everyone is arguing about UHD while both mainline boxes tread water at best in the US, Nintendo is in the process of making one hell of a comeback, with strong growth in 3DS HW and SW, the biggest Pokémon launch ever, and SMR coming in time to rev the mass market demand machine in advance of Switch.

lol, what?

We should all hope for the best for Nintendo but really?

I think price explains much of the two console owner buying decisions. The idea of a Nintendo console as your secondary console came about because the 360 and PS3 were incredibly expensive at release while the Wii was significantly less. It just wasn't economically feasible for many people to own both a 360 and PS3 early on.

The problem for Nintendo now is that they no longer have such a large price advantage. As a result they are no longer the default impulse second buy. Paid subscriptions for both the PS4 and XB1 helps Nintendo somewhat retain their cost advantage, but they aren't mandatory and I don't think people automatically factor in its price.

All without a CD/DVD/Blu-ray/UHD Blu-ray drive of any type & no one bat an eye or question why Nintendo isn't including a disc drive

Yeah that's one way to look at it. I disagree. I disagree with the entire tone of your post.

If the ps4 slim outsold xbone S in November then Sony pretty much crushed ms in November. And that's not such a huge stretch either as November and December are huge compared to the other months. Could open a big gap. MS best hope Xbone S held its own with the slim at least.

Hmmm the new spiderman homecoming trailer has me excited for the movie and the game, wondering if sony does a limited edition console when it releases

I'm excited for the Switch too, but c'mon. Tread water? Sony and Microsoft are doing a lot more than treading water..

And I find it to be a weird perspective...as if Crackdown 3, Scalebound or Sea of thieves were announced a few months before release. It's the main grief I had with my Xbox One : I love Forza and Gears (and Sunset Overdrive), but MS did not put enough effort to offer me something unique in terms of exclusives in my eyes. Sony took too long, but they are now at full cruise speed.

They are not in process of anything, they are going to have a good year because of pokemon but the switch has a bunch of things that can make or break the system. Ideally they will hit it big but I'm definitely iffy on them until we know the price since if they price it to high than it won't matter. Heck I also don't believe them regarding third parties but I would like to be wrong.

Would love to know the Pro/Slim split.

We don't know the split, but apparently Pro did extraordinary well. At least Sony was able to sell-through almost every Pro they produced so far.

According to Sony's Shuhei Yoshida, the PlayStation 4 Pro is off to an unexpectedly strong start. Speaking with Digital Spy, the likeable suit admitted that the company had primarily anticipated the premium platform to sell to early adopters, but it turns out that many are selecting the supercharged system as their first foray into the world of PS4.

"We need more time to analyse the situation, but it seems that more people who are buying PS4 for the first time are choosing PS4 Pro," he told the British website. "I think that's driving a larger demand than we had anticipated. In many markets it's sold out and hard to find."

People really want it to be a big deal when most people don't really care about disc anymore.

the world is changing & watching movies is so simple now without having to insert a disc.

It's been that way for a very, very long time. It's been weird for me with UHD BD titles having to go back to playing discs.

Its like I went back in time to 2006 when Sony fans were using the EXACT same talking point.

This quote may come back to haunt you.

Different times, back then streaming wasn't as ubiquitous. Shit, back then Netflix was exclusively sending people TV Shows/Movies in the mailbox.

This is extremely exciting to me, because I believe that the greater success the Pro has, the more incentive there is to take advantage of it. I also really like the idea of upgraded systems, and want this initiative to succeed.

From Sony's Japanese ps2 launch date of March 4th 2000 to march ending 2004, they shipped 71.30 million ps2s WW.

That's 4 years. If Sony can sell another 20 million ps4s between now and next holiday, and I'm sure they will, they will have either matched or maybe even exceeded ps2's numbers for year 4.

Most impressive.

Here in the U.K. It was the slim that was in bundles selling buckets. People who buy consoles this stage in the generation tend to be price conscious - that's why they waited this long. I'm sure the slim will be responsible for the vast majority

I love new tech I even remember setting around thinking about how much data can be stored on a CD,DVD then Blu-ray but not once have UHD Blu-ray excited me & it's not because of the streaming tech that's here now but because UHD Blu-ray isn't really much different from Blu-ray & so far it's only 50/66/100GB on the disc so the disc isn't really anything special it's mostly the standards that the players have to abide by that separate it from Blu-ray players & not the actual UHD Blu-ray disc it self. That just don't seem like much of a reason to start a new format for after 10 years I think there is going to be a better disc format in a few years or they will go all in on streaming /downloadable movies.

It really is. It's like these posts were set to simmer, waiting for the right moment to shit on the mere idea of UHD.

PS4 outselling Xbone doesn't make the decision to not have UHD any less... confusing.
There's nothing confusing about maximizing profits by not including a feature that not many at this point in time will bother with. Not including a headphone jack in a phone is confusing. This ain't.

Nothing to be confused about PS4 came out before the UHD Blu-ray standards were put in place so PS4 Pro can't really benefit from UHD Blu-ray on the gaming side so it's no reason to add to the cost of the PS4 Pro or use a format on one PS4 console & not the other for a small amount of people who would have actually use the PS4 Pro to play UHD Blu-ray.

It shows all the talk of doom and gloom and of the uhd being a Trojan horse as being utter stupid though. Uhd is niche of a niche and if you're that hardcore into the medium you'd want a real standalone deck for your playback.

"playing" dumb? unpossible
But you do realise this 40% is about same if not more than XB1 lifetime sale to date right?

Being an ex-360 owner it always disgust to me to see people downplaying 360 in WW

It also had up to 18 months alone in the market, and was a quite a bit cheaper. Remove those two factors, and the X360 would have suffered the same exact fate as the X1 is facing outside of the UK and USA.
