GAF Votes FOTY 2016 Thread: Fail Of The Year

1. Meltdowns Over Disappointing Games

You see the threads. The hyperbole. The inexplicable inability to discriminate fact from fiction. A game, or games, come out with disappointments both known and unknown and the apoplectic toxicity forms this mindless mob that leaps at another chance at gnashing their teeth and rending their garments.

Calm the fuck down some, people. Put that energy to use in better games. Be smarter about tossing out the shekels you feel were stolen from you. And biggest of all, don't fucking pledge yourself to a broken relationship you have with these companies if you're that tore up about it. You ain't buying competitors' products that do what you want, you're making lists of demands to the offending company that ain't a good look if they do or dont meet them, and you'll still get on that hype train for new games as you've not learned responsibility. Cut them from your hearts and just cut it out in general. Geez.

2. One Company Hiding Moral Malfeasence Of Luckey But Another Company Punishing Rapp At Request of Same Assholes

Post-truth asshole gets a pass from the company he's at, victim of post-truth assholes gets fired by it.

I know it ain't the same company, that makes it worse as it's spreading.

3. Bethesda's Review Withholding Antics

Listen to the segment on this here. It's the distrust of professional reviews being used to shunt that responsibilty to those even deeper under the influence of those making the games themselves.

4. CS:GO Gambling Shenanigans

HonorTheCall did us all a huge favor in pointing out this manipulation of this wierd, wierd thing. Valve also needs to protect their customers a bit earlier.

I feel like I don't even have to vote anymore given what everyone is voting for :p

1. No man's sky
2. Street Fighter V
3. Mighty No. 9
4. Battleborn
5. Final Fantasy XV

2. No Man's Sky

Basically, early access games masquerading as finished products. Shameful.

1. Palmer Luckey. Not even close. Trying to put a game in the top slot is petty compared to how awful this is. His actions had very real world consequences and not just humorous GAF meltdown threads. I'd like to ask anyone posting a list solely of games how they could possibly justify it versus this. Because this political matter is so divisive, this won't get the votes it should on an objective basis. It would be awesome if the mods considered that by offering some sort of "official" dishonorable mention atop what the obvious winner is going to be.

2. CS:GO gambling controversy. This would be an easy winner in many other years.

3. No Man's Sky. Biggest didn't-live-up-to-hype fiasco in a decade.

NMS was just an overhyped game that they are beginning to add advertised features to anyway. The funding of a hate group is something that actually affects people and potentially rolls back a lot of the progress made towards making the games industry something many people, myself included, not ashamed to be a fan of.

I agree with all your reasoning, but like Palmer Luckey actually achieved his goal. Not so much a Fail of the Year as a Piece of Shit of the Year (Gaming).

This thread is brutal, hahaha

Totally on point though, I think

My vote is

1. Palmer Luckey

2. Meltdowns Over Disappointing Games

Thanks Satellite for the shout!

If he had kept his alt-right ass to himself he would have been ...whatever, he donated to a hate group. Mighty No.9 and NMS pale in comparison.

I didn't know people with this opinion even existed.

The single greatest thing Zero did was the massive improvements to all range mode, why people would want another command is beyond me (and this is coming from someone who got every ending in that game).

Personal opinion, I guess? 13 year old me really enjoyed Command (I played a TON of online), and I always wanted another portable Star Fox like it.

I got every story ending as well, but I always wondered where the series could go after that. I guess the only thing I'm really thankful for is that they got rid of Krystal.

Good point. I'd argue he got what he wanted for himself, but he's a still an epic fail to the gaming industry, which is what we're more broadly voting for. Guy was the damn face of VR in Time Magazine a year ago.

Face of VR also happens to represent a lot of the vile toxic politics of 2016. We need to take a long hard look at the industry to stop people like that and gamergate happening

Bad games always happen. Scamming money sucks more.
This is what would deservedly win if we had competent games journalism and these criminals were taken to task.
But we don't so I'll hop on the bandwagon... No Man's Sky.

Palmer Luckey is just one of countless wealthy people who fund hate groups in the cesspool known as the United States of America.
No reason to vilify him just because he happens to be the face of Oculus. And at least he isn't getting rich by encouraging young kids to gamble.
He's an asshole. But he's not a fail. In fact, it's the assholes who are success stories more often than not.
