What cancelled/unreleased game intrigues you the most?

I would say True Fantasy Live Online but really I mean True Fantasy Online back when it was planned for the Dreamcast, being high on the fumes of PSO, TFO looked like the next big step for me to geek out to.

Silent Hills.

A surreal horror title directed by Hideo Kojima, the man famously behind some of the most surreal 4th-wall-breaking moments in game history. Co-directed by Guillermo Del Toro, the man responsible for Pans Labyrinth. With creature design from Junji Ito, the master behind Uzumaki and Gyo.

A dream team of horror masters assembled for the express purpose of reviving the greatest horror series in all of gaming - Silent Hill. A team that had already proven itself through a self-contained work of surreal horror pitched as a demo for the final product. It would have been amazing.

There was only one problem: Konami.

Prey 2: The Thread

Open world Bladerunner bounty hunting game. Much like how people cursed Fox for dropping Firefly people will curse Bethesda for doing shady shit no matter how much they deny it and blame the "quality" of the tittle as justification.

This game would have been undoubtedly a masterpiece with amazing visuals for its time, great art design and gameplay...and it's something that everyone knew...including Bethesda.

I would love for Unseen64 to do a detailed piece on this but I doubt Bethesda will ever cough up anything about this fuck up.

This is my choice. I LOVED the idea and look of this game. Shame we won't get to see it.

Does anyone remember Gunslinger from the early PS2 days? It was a game set in the wild west where you could do anything, which at that point was rarer than now. People you kill would affect your reputation, and if you wanted to kill a town's mayor or something, you could.

It does and I know 2 people that have played or at least seen it. Someone really really should ask Yu Suzuki about it now that he accessible through Shenmue III development kickstarter.
Somehow this is what always happens. There's never a direct source, but always someone who knows someone else who supposedly saw it.

There are enough believable reports of journalists being shown video of Aoi performing some of her moves solo against a blue backdrop. An informed guess places that same tech behind Digital Dance Mix, but the two versions of VF3 Suzuki basically made out of spite at the end of 1998 is too big of a leap. I really want VF3 Saturn to be real but there's nothing there to grab ahold of.

Although yeah now that he's out of Sega someone should really ask him about it.

It's always been Simsville for me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_Ripjj6fuQ

I was a huge fan of The Sims growing up (still am truth be told), and also of Sim City 3000 (Sim City 3000 Unlimited is my favorite Sim City game),, and loved the whole concept of both. The Sims was a blast, and it was so fun to build the houses and try to get the sims to the high paying jobs. Of course, the expansions added so much to it too. And as far as Sim City, the game sparked questions in my young mind about how cities grow, the effects of choices like coal/oil/nuclear/wind power, and also about how cities function and try to pull in people but also interact with the cities around them, that I've been quite interested in even now. Also transit, because trains are awesome :D.

And so I saw a trailer or two for Simsville and it seemed like a very early Sims 3, where you could control the sims, but also zoom out and take control of the city and watch it build up. It seemed like the perfect game for me.

I don't think I ever saw more than 2 or 3 trailers for it but I was so so so excited for the game, and incredibly sad when, years later, I wound up finding out that it'd been cancelled. I still wonder what could've been, but I guess we'll never know :(.

I played it daily.
*snip*

Man. The only way I was able to get over being sad about this cancellation was to just assume development was a trash fire that never came together. Reading this bums m out. It was my most anticipated game since reveal.

The cancelled first person Avengers game comes to mind.

Oh forgot about that one! That game looked pretty solid and unique even today. Was there ever a story about why it didn't happen? Nevermind. Found an Unseen64 episode on it. Aaaaand it was the THQ fiasco of course.

The fact that so many of the developers Ive briefly had words with about Prey 2 cared that much about the game gives me faith that some day Ill be able to do a video that does it justice. Most games I cover only get a few sentences in before the "Buts" start coming hah.

I read the Unseen 64 book, had some interesting titles in there but also a bunch of filler... and very awkward writing due to it being from a non-native speaker. Could have really used some editing!

But it did tip me off to Skies of Arcadia 2 being in development at one point. That definitely intrigues me the most, considering how good the original was.

And of course, I'd have loved to see what was planned for Versus, Lufia 3: Ruins Chasers for PS1, and Tengai Makyou 3 for PC-FX...

I ordered it mainly to support Unseen 64. It definitely looks rough from a layout and writing standpoint (and what's with the paltry number of arcade titles in the book?), but it's the only book on the subject as far as I know. Hopefully they sell enough to make another one in the future.

The problem with the Unseen64 book is that it was written by a bunch of us, scattered randomly across the globe. It wasn't all written by one person, meaning basic coordination in how things were written were lacking. There are a lot of things that Im not entirely happy with, especially the rush to get it out this year when additional editing was sorely needed beyond just cleaning up, but overall I think it came out better than I expected in a lot of ways. Trust me though, I was fighting until the end to allow someone, be it me or any number of us, take a pass at it to clean it up.

As for the articles that were or werent in it, it comes down to what people volunteered to do, and what material is actually out there to do properly. We were also told that there would be a limited amount of pictures, but there ended up being a lot more in there, ending with lower quality than if those of us with access to games had known to take screenshots and the like.

No worries, man. I'm just glad that it exists. Hopefully there can be a second edition or follow-up book sometime in the future.

I remember someone saying that there were plans to hopefully return Unseen 64's website to its former glory sometime in 2017. Is that looking like a possibility?

I'm referring to how it used to be easier to find/discover games on the site back before it switched to a blog structure.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.

I dont know a lot about what goes on behind the scenes, but I do know that they plan on having a much better game discovery system. What that looks like, I have no idea hah.

I think there's a lot of really great research being done that is better than what was done in the past anyway, but access is certainly an issue.

Well, I just remember from the pre-blog days there used to be a page just like this, but instead of the links on that page taking you to blog posts that matched those tags listed in order of publish date it would take you to another table with links to all of the games that fell under that category.

For example, if I clicked on SNES it would take me to a page with all of the beta/canceled SNES games listed in alphabetical order on a big index. That was much better, I think.

I agree. I know that's high on the list of things the people in charge want to improve.

Metal Gear Rising 2 and Silent Hills. Tragic.

Wait, was that "2" teaser in the MGR font ever confirmed to actually be related to MGR2? I can't remember what that turned out to be, or if it was just dropped from discussion.

Game is really hard hah, but handles nice.

I had a feeling you owned it, or played it. i'd love to try more then the demo one day.

For a while I kept thinking this was a DC game for some reason until the other year when I found my demo disc again.

Valve talked about a canceled version of Portal 2 that didn't have portals, but instead an 'F-Stop' mechanic that Valve loved but decided wasn't what people would want from a Portal sequel.

Every so often I still wonder what that was. It really must have been cool for them to not just have went with portals from the start.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

Don't get me wrong...I enjoy XV. I just loved Nomura's 3 game vision of this. The idea of a Romeo and Juliet-Shakespearan style story mixed with Final Fantasy with modern elements attached to Nomura's flair really got me worked up. I hope Nomura gets the chance to do this in 15 years for the XV anniversary lol

The Grinder. It was supposed to be a FPS for the Wii from High Voltage that had you in Mexico or the American Southwest fighting vampires, chupacabra and other monsters you'd see in grindhouse movies. Looked pretty original, at least in terms of the setting. Alas it never got released and High Voltage never really addressed what happened to it.

I'll throw a couple of Dreamcast games into the mix.

Armada 2. The followup to Armada. A highly addictive space shootemup multiplayer rpg. Part two was supposed to be online as well. Yeah I know Armada Online is a thing but that's for pc and is in a constant alpha state..

Chakan: The Forever Man. This one looked really interesting as a follow up to the Sega Genesis game. Undead dual wielding swordsman who uses alchemy and hunts down evil to destroy them.

Some more infos here. https://www.unseen64.net/2008/05/22/some-infos-about-chakan-dreamcast/

Apparently a lot of design elements from Chakan eventually made their way into Blood Omen 2. More infos here http://www.thelostworlds.net/BO2/Chakan_and_Sirens.html

Short tech demo video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXPeKCiIGFs

Anyway, I always liked Chakan and was really looking forward to it. Shame it never came to fruition but I guess it's good some of it's assets were released in a different game.

It is still Resident Evil 3.5 (castle/fog version) for me. Coming off of REmake, this seemed to mark the series at its darkest/scariest and it was probably the most excited I've ever been for a game. So I was really bummed out that things ended up going in the complete opposite direction, even if the final version of RE4 is an amazing game in its own right.

I would have loved to have seen how that game would have turned out.

Yerp! This. It's a weird feeling to love a game (RE4) but still hate it because of what it could have been. No idea how they went from the Castle/Fog version, to a similar "Hook-Man" version, to the pulp-action/schlocky RE4 we ended up with.

Ushiro by Level 5. An rpg about a guy possessed by a ghost for PSP. It looked so intriguing. :/

Outside of that FF Versus 15, Silent Hills, Lily Bergamo. But I guess at least these were reworked into other games.

Resident Evil on Gameboy always stands out to me. The fact it got cancelled so close to being complete when it looked as ambitious and impressive as it did really stings.

Oh, damn. That one might even give Thrill Kill a run for its money for me. I was so mad when Ghost faded to the point of official vaporware status.

One of my biggest regrets was the year I saw it at E3 (yes back when Blizzard still did E3), and one of the Blizzard staffers asked me if I was interested in playing. I replied with, "It looks great, but no thanks, I'll just wait until it comes out in a year to play it." WHY?!

P.S. They had their multiplayer on display at the show and it looked amazing at the time.

Came in for this and Star Wars 1313, was not disappointed.

I still think about this game because I feel there's not enough really good space sci-fi games coming out.

A friend of mine back in the day both had modded PSXs that would play NTSC games (this was in Germany) and bootlegs. We could never afford anywhere near the games we wanted so we bought Hong Kong bootlegs from this trader we got ahold of through the trading section in a popular video game magazine back then. I mean I realize this is morally pretty fucked up at this point in my life and so on but that's not the point.

We were aware of Thrill Kill due to several magazines showing screenshots and it being touted as 'the most violent game ever' prior to its release. The Hong Kong bootleg guy told us he had an early copy of it and we split the money and bought it. This was pre-internet so we had no information outside of magazines. Anyway, it arrived and we were fucking pissed because many things didn't work, characters weren't selectable, things glitched out a lot and so on, no multiplayer. We returned it to the guy. Shortly after my friend told me he read the game was cancelled and we finally realized it was some sort of advance copy or similar.

Is this a common pre-release version of it floating around out there these days or were we stupidly lucky and didn't know it? We never thought twice about it even after finding out it was cancelled since quite frankly the game was pretty much terrible. I'm mainly curious to know how rare it is for anyone to have played this version?? I completely forgot about this until now actually.

Just watched this footage of Prey 2 to see what everyone in this thread is going on about.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPkHZfjK5z4

What the FUCK? WHY DID THIS GET CANCELLED!?

More than most other games in this thread, this game could have legitimately been one of the greats judging by this gameplay footage. God damn.

You know what? I will never buy a Bethesda product from this day forward because of this injustice. I mean it. Fuck them.
