Not really because the flipside of this is people that think this is people that think XIII is a good game need to play good games.
We all are shaped by what we experience. I don't have the time or will to spend time on the bad rats of this world just so I have a slightly higher opinion on XIII.
XIII is by all means a bad game far below the average quality of games I usually play.
FFXIII had an obvious hand in weakening the brand but the market was so different back then, it was so long ago (yeah, 6 years can be an eternity in the industry) its not worth splitting hairs how relevant it is today
FFXV in and of itself has pretty much zero appeal in terms of blowing up japan.. considering the state of affairs there it probably met expectations
Now FF fans are starting to adopt the same excuses as the Zelda fanbase huh.
Divisive entries will always get this kind of reception. Criticism towards the newest release is more vocal because it's the most relevant point of discussion. That's true for both FF and Zelda, there's no cycle that makes people who disliked a specific entry suddenly start loving it because they didn't enjoy the latest one. Some games do get large cult followings later down the line but that's a different phenomenom and not as common as some would like to believe. I'm still waiting for the internet to suddenly start loving Twilight Princess and rightfully rank it above Wind Waker, but sadly no dice.
Well sorry, I took as if it was directed to me because of your average quality comment.
I can see the various flaws both games have and still consider them good games with some strong points too.
The thing is that I've stopped looking for awesome stories in Final Fantasy since they haven't told one since IX, so I'm just there for the gameplay, visuals and music, and all the latest iterations had these for me.

Re FFII, it's actually a better game than X to me.

The worst Zelda dungeons thread pretty much sums up my feelings about Wind Waker, seems people are willing to overlook it's many flaws because of it's art style
It's the remake people want but don't really know they want. Because it would basically be the same concept as FF15 except leaned alot more to the "Fantasy" side.
FF2 is unfairly maligned IMO. While I would rank it low on my FF list I still think it's a good game that had a pretty good story all things considered and introduced many series staples.
The actual simple truth is Square has been ignoring the Final Fantasy fan base since they merged with Enix and the series wouldn't even be recognizable at this point if Square Enix didn't rip off FFVII's Art style just to make XV look like Final Fantasy.
The series might as well have ended at X. It's not coming back, that's for sure. .
It needs to do a return to roots thingy and play on nostalgia ala SW Episode 7 & Jurassic World.
That will get japan sales back. They aint here for pseudo-ARPG all male cast wearing boring clothes in modern day america FF (and tbh I wouldn't be either had the Versus history not been present)

So it's pretty much just how much the Japanese console market has shrunken right? This is why XV had a simultaneous launch with the west.
At this rate we're either looking at FFXVI launching simultaneously on whatever handheld is left alive at that time (The Switch? Or Dragon Quest XI style?) or increasingly pivoting towards the western market.

I guess it probably doesn't count, but I enjoyed the Dawn Of Souls iteration. Although I did start to imagine how you'd roleplay the way the system is gamed, with the whole team groaning when they encountered just a couple of goblins because they knew they'd suddenly be compelled to repeatedly hit one another. Because apparently you can't just hit one another to train, there must be a goblin watching.
Just as FFXIII got shit for being linear,FFXV should get shit for being ''open world''.
Its the worst kind of open world.Dreadfully empty, rife with meaningless quests ,lifeless and poorly developed. There are countless invisible barriers, bad driving and flying mechanics.
Its mostly a copy pasta of motels ,crows nest and gas stations. If not for its technical beauty, its not worth playing at all.
FFXIII was the bad kind of linear,FFXV was the bad kind of open.
I've never got around to buying the VIII PC release, I didn't think it had the boosters like the IX release does?
Oh, god yes in regards to V and VI. I've never finished V, and keep waiting for for a more definitive version. I keep hoping the mobile mini-remakes/ports aren't going to be it for awhile, buuuut, they probably are.

Nooooo, we're supposed to be arguing about XV vs XIII, not our lord and savior, XII! I will half-assedly fight you all.
It'd be interesting to see what a team would do with a pure turn based mainline FF again, since other Square games have done some fun experimenting on the side. Bravely Default had my favorite turn-based battle system, it had so much variety. I know WoFF is a bit more of a hybrid system, but it still had a wait mode option, and was really fun, though not remotely as deep. Keeping agility in mind with equipment and mirages really paid off in regards to turn frequency, or defending instead of attacking to have your turn come up again quicker.

I guess I should stop looking too given that other places do satisfy that itch far better but as someone that has many dear memories of past FF I kind of always want to hope.

This still is bullshit and only something people who need to feel better than others say. If what you say is true people would be sucking off FFXIII right this second claiming it's the greatest FF to ever do it. This FF cycle is a made up fiction within the cortex of your brain and isn't reality.
These days I like FFII more than I, III, and IV. I mean, FFIV. It loses its novelty once you've played it once, although the ds remake is pretty great but even that gets old on replays.

I'm not seeing an overall changing sentiment about that game overall, though? Sure, some poor souls might go,"it's not as bad as I remember! People have no idea what they were talking about!" but for the most part, would you really say there's been an overall shift in the perception of FFXIII or its sequels? The reception has been pretty consistent. Hironobu Sakaguchi hinted at them being doo doo just last year. Most of the press and fan reception surrounding FFXV is in the area of,"thank goodness it's not as bad as XIII - I actually like this one even if it's flawed!"
Come on, Duck. You and I both also know that Light and Waves loves FFXIII as well.
No I'm serious! Be in a second avvy bet. If you win, I will make my avatar of Vanille and want to die. You get to choose the embarrassing pic. Ciao!
edit: er, to clarify, when I say "I bet it won't" I'm not talking about FF7R not coming out. I'm saying there won't be an "FF cycle" and suddenly we'll all be jacking FFXIII off and celebrating its post-game.
I blame XIII and XII. Even if they're servicable games, they're still bad Final Fantasies that tarnished the brand. XIV 1.0 did damage too. In general, this is post FFX and PS3 era Square reaping what they sowed. Hopefully they'll steadily recover , as theyre doing promising stuff now.
With all of that said, I think morsoe than all of that, this is a reflection of the JP console scene ultimately. I'm very curious to see how DQXI does on consoles in Japan.

I never wanted to admit but I think FF has fallen off quite dramatically overall & may never recover.
Tabata & Toriyama(& by extension their close associates) have proven time & again that their products are often fatally flawed in areas that really matter. But that's the kind of leadership that FF is stuck with.
FF needs its own Druckmann/Straley/Hidetaka Miyazaki tier kind of leaders.Maybe Kitase & Nomura will finally turn the tide(?) I am not counting on it.
What they're trying to do now with FFVIIR is recapture a game from a very different time & its a nigh impossible task.A retreading of the past.
Oh definitely. It kind of already has. It's already split between command based fans and action rpg fans. Then there's splitting the game up into parts! That games fan reception is going to be messy and fully features every problem (and positive) I wrote about the franchise is that Dragon Quest popularity in the west thread.
People really need to stop saying that FF13 was a terrible game or the worst game of all time. Seems like most modern gamers do not know what a truly reprehensible game is nowadays. Sure, it had issues, imperfections and some peculiar decisions like with pretty much any game, but it is nowhere near a horrendous game. Not sure why rabid fans insist on hating it so much. It's perfectly fine that you didn't like the game, but I really think gamers exaggerate it's flaws.
