Xbox Closes a Milestone Year in 2016 with an Exceptional Year Ahead for Gamers

Wow, kind of embarassing to read...

I guess Gears 4 really didnt do very hot if they are still giving these useless figures about the game instead of sales numbers.

Great and super interesting engagement numbers. Looking forward to that ReCore DLC and Scalebound at least.

Great numbers all around! Grats on Forza for beating out F1 2016, Sebastieb Loeb Rally Evo, TrackMania Turbo, among others!

I'm so excited to share with you that I spent 3 minutes reading Microsoft's multiple engagement numbers. On January 5th, GAF members all around the world enjoyed 5-10 hours worth of paragraph-reading and exciting number-crunching.

We're thrilled that gamers have chosen to read 885 words of exuberant mathematics, and can't wait to share more of them in the future.

Having the Scorpio unveil in March would be a disaster. People are gonna be going nuts then for all things Switch when it releases - having an announcement of Scorpio would literally just get drowned out by Nintendo.

E3 will be all about Scorpio.
You don't think a small event in May isn't possible for the HW and a couple titles? They could use e3 for the big games blowout.

I think that's why they should, I think letting Nintendo get all the attention and build up a userbase quickly could be a problem for the Scorpio, as people who are looking at getting a new console would just get that instead. And E3 will be even harder to steal the spotlight, so them getting a lot of info out before could be useful.

Regarding the games, I really do think we're going to get some event prior to Scorpio to reveal the system. Other than the system, specs, etc. at said event I'd expect them to show Forza, a few 3rd party games using Scorpio and that's really it. Then at E3 they will go full on with games, xbox live updates, etc.

I know Phil Spencer said he doesn't want to begin hyping Scorpio until he starts showing the games. Pretty much explains why all we're hearing about is Halo Wars 2, everything else is being prepped for Scorpio reveal.

So if MS have a console that sells well in the future will they start rereleasing sales numbers again?

Forget console numbers. This is staggering.

"Fans created over 2.4 million personalized Xbox Wireless Controller designs via Xbox Design Lab in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico."

....if these designs equated to sales. 2.4m higher priced controllers? Blimey. That seems massive.

However, it could also include designs that are created but then junked before reaching checkout.

As to Scorpio. I just can't see MS waiting for June to unveil it. It's simply too late and needs to be clear of the pre-E3 hype of others. . That said, they got burned revealing the One in March and NOT focusing on games until June, so maybe a quick one-two will be what they go with.

That hurt me

Think it's safe to say Microsoft won't be working with Remedy again anytime soon. Quantum Break doesn't even get a mention in a press release that celebrates how many custom controllers got sold (or just designed, it's not clear). What a snub!

Seems like a sum up of all NPD PR in 2016.

Full of spin with nothing to grab about.

I doubt XB1 reached 28m shipped or 26m sold in 2016.

Individual conference unlikely?

Strikes me as strange. I feel Scorpio might get overshadowed with the E3 info bombs.

Edit: FH3 is a beast. Probably the most successful MS title, especially taking into account expectations.

What E3 infobombs? E3 has been getting smaller & smaller presence year after year. Several players who used to go there don't even attend E3 anymore. Its mainly a press conference event for the big 3 1st parties nowadays.

I'm not ruling out an individual showing on its own, but there really isn't any reason for it. They would just announce specs and show a few games running at native 4K, which is something we can't even see on a livestream. This is the exact problem the PS4 Pro event had, and I honestly do not think MS wants to go down that road with this thing.

X1 wasn't revealed in march of 2013, it was revealed in late May of 2013, literally 2 weeks before E3. They didn't get burned because of that, they got burned because of the nonsense they were announcing it would have.

Having the Scorpio unveil at E3 makes the most sense. Its not a new platform, just a beefed up X1 - the games it will be showcasing are X1 games running in Native 4K.

Yup, E3 is a few months away after all. We're not getting anything Scorpio related until then.

I'd rather we got info about the console pre-E3, then saw its launch line up at E3. A hardware-heavy E3 isnt really much to look forward to, especially with the biggest competitor showcasing some big hits.

Picked up Recore for $20 around the holidays, haven't had a chance to play it, guess I'll hold off until they add that final robot and whatever content is planned.

Hmmm. Add on content for ReCore. I am actually surprised by that. I really need to finish that game.

To me, it seems it's pretty much just cut content to get the game out on time. The tank was in all the promotional stuff a long time ago, and the new areas are in the game but the content is blocked because you need the tank to get there.

Everything except Forza Horizon 3 PR, which is actually revealing.

I'm just confused why you are embarrassed while reading it. I get the feeling you don't care much for Microsoft games and I doubt that you work for the company. If you're saying that the people at Microsoft should be embarrassed, I don't think they feel that much either. All thing considered, they've made a pretty damn good recovery since the 2013 XB1 reveal.

Nothing at all about growth yoy, having a record in December or shipped hardware, but I guess that isn't too surprising.
One number given I guess is 14 million units sold between every Forza game on XB1 and Win10 combined? (F5, FH2, F6, FH3).

It has "seen well over 14 million players". Those aren't sales numbers.

So if MS have a console that sells well in the future will they start rereleasing sales numbers again?

Don't worry, they'll post sales numbers as soon as those are good enough to brag about them.

But that they failed to deliver the number of shots fired at in Quantum Break is really disappointing.

Thinking of the time I used to be a passionate fan of Xbox, reading that statement just brought it home to me the lack of motivation to be excited. I'll predict January 2018's with stuff like "the huge success of the Forza Motorsport series continued with Forza Motorsport 7, Halo Wars 2' continued success will strengthen with the new DLC expansion pack this February leading on to the next chapter in Halo with Halo 6, which had a incredible reception at E3 2017. We will continue to evolve Xbox Live and continue to bring you the best games you love" etc etc

I don't like dissing the brand by any means but I'm not entirely in love with what they offer these days either.

Scorpio.Is.Not.A.New.Console.Generation.

It's not getting a 'launch lineup'. Thats not what Scorpio is - its a significantly stronger X1 that will be getting Native 4K & most likely VR support with a deal from Oculus. There won't be any 'Scorpio-only' games; its just running X1 titles.

April for the Scorpio reveal, straight out of the Redmond campus. I'd put money on it.

I'm guessing Scorpio's "launch lineup" will consist of handpicked first/third party games that get full Scorpio support and be a showpiece for the console.

I meant more as in, there's going to be tons and tons of game announcements and Sony/Nintendo announcing their own stuff.

Scorpio might just get lost in the shuffle of info vs. a more dedicated conference where all eyes are on it.

This is good.

Seems 2016 was a good year for X1 and Ps4 at least a decent holiday for 3DS.

2016 was a good year on Xbox, the console was my primary choice last year, but all these meaningless stats instead of sales numbers are just ridiculous. Come on. Nintendo have been open about the Wii U all along, despite the disastrous numbers.

Scalebound, State of Decay and Crackdown 3 are wayyyy too quiet to be anywhere for 1H 2017.

At least Sea of Thieves has its alpha thing ongoing and some consistent buzz.
State of decay and Crackdown were already said to be coming 2017. So likely not first half and probably winter releases.

No idea about sea of thieves or scalebound

It didn't get lost in the shuffle last year. It was THE story and all they showed was a short video.

But, yeah, they will have a dedicated conference for it.

Of course it's getting a launch lineup. That's obviously why these titles are coming out late in the year. MS will market it as the next big thing and say, "Look at all these awesome games! Oh, and you can play them on PC and XB1 as well!" It's not a new console generation, but it will certainly be marketed as the next BIG console launch. I don't see it launching as silently as the PS4 Pro (don't read that as PS4 Pro not selling well, because that's not my intention).

MS will probably have a reveal before E3. Too much noise at E3. They want to explain this thing and it's specs. How will this co exist with Xbox one. E3 should be used for showing off software for fall 2017 and beyond. Lasts years conference was a bit too long. An hour and 30 minutes is pushing it for gaming conferences at least.

Unless Scorpio has a dozen new features, it's basically just an extremely powerful XB1S. It doesn't need to spend 30 minutes on the hardware details.

10 minutes of "Most powerful console, 6TFs, a lot of games will be native 4k, all your favourite XB1 features like 360 BC, this November, 399 or 499"

Then goes to the games.

I've been really surprised how much Groups and LFG added to Live. I wonder what 'enhancements' they're looking to add still.

Yeah, start with Scorpio. Then announce that all games shown in the rest of it are running on Scorpio...if they can get to that point in time.

While its true that Nintendo is likely going to have a far bigger E3 this year than they've had in the last 2 years, and Sony always puts on a tremendous show, I don't necessarily think the Scorpio will need its own event. It's already been announced, we know its ballpark strength - now we just need form factor & launch details.

The biggest reason I don't think it'll get a show is because the biggest things it'll be doing isn't something that come across well on a typical livestream. Thats the main reason the PS4 Pro event was underwhelming for the home viewer, where as the people in attendance were way more enthused. MS might just go with it though, and put together a big showing for it. But unless there is way more to Scorpio than just 'beefed up X1 with VR', I don't imagine it'll be all that exciting.

Xbox One has been completely awesome for me. Looking forward to the Scorpio reveal and then moving on up to it some time next year.

Sony did a event for the Pro, which is just a more powerful PS4, why shouldn't Xbox do the same?

They sold over a million of the $150 elite controllers. The custom controller was only like $80. It's not that outrageous

Huh, maybe for Xbox fans or just a circles I hang out kind of thing. It was kind of a non-thing for me and most people I know.
