Been playing Shantae from the Bundle, at 60% apparently.
It's very charming and generally fun, but it always feels like something is slightly off.
I've pondered a while over what it is that makes it not completely click for me, and I think I've narrowed it down to 2 things:

- Combat/Enemies: I'm not sure how to explain it best, but the hair attack doesn't feel satisfying. I don't really like most of the enemies attack pattersn either, they don't really mesh all that well with your means of attack I think.
- This has only hit me recently, but I feel like backtracking is a chore. And you usually do a lot of backtracking in Metroidvanias to see if you have something new to explore with your new tools (or to even progress further), so I think backtracking not being a chore should be important.
I thought about why I feel like this and I've come to the conclusion that it's a combination of level design and your moveset. On the one hand, the tools I've got so far don't really expand your traversing abilities in a way that makes you move through the places you already visited faster and/or more comfortable, and on the other hand the leveldesign isn't clever enough to mitigate this either.

So yeah, after coming from Odallus and Ori this one feels somewhat lacking in comparision, though good enough for me to complete it.

i hooked my PS4 pro to the new monitor,i can't see the spot or the backlight bleed, but i know it's there and my mind won't stop thinking about it,FUCK!

I just beat Pony Island. The part where
the game sends you messages as one of your Steam friends
really messed with me. This game was fucked up.

Just beat it also. I didn't think it was that great as some reviews makes it up to be. Playing an intentionally shit game is only fun to a certain point.

But that part you mention was great, and also
When you're asked to delete the game from your harddrive. I played the DRM free version, so after that I was just dumped back to Windows, where I had the game folder open in explorer. I did delete the game. :)

Fuck this type of shit

I almost never want to buy this game or H1Z1 for pulling the same shit on principle alone

... you'll still be able to buy the game for less than the current cost.

What's the difference between selling Game for $15 and DLC for $5, or selling Game+DLC for $20 and Game for $15 and giving everyone who owns the game before the DLC the DLC?

If it weren't financially beneficial to do it, they wouldn't do it.

Maybe this lets them give a lower sale to the base game, but I doubt it will ever be cheaper to buy the base game + all current DLCs when they are split.

The two H1Z1 subs have never been as cheap to buy together as they were pre-split on Steam.

I don't really see an issue with this. Their first update remade the entire game to let you play as one of the bosses. TONS of new art, new gameplay, etc. The game was for all intents and purposes a totally new game. Now they plan to do that 3 more times? I'm really ok with this.

If you don't like it buy Shovel Knight now and get it all for free. I wish more companies did DLC and updates like Shovel Knight. Fuck the season pass bullshit. This is MUCH better.

Kind of confusing. I sorta wish they'd move off of Shovel Knight at this point.

I believe they commented saying they'll probably unveil their next project this year.

I really hope their next project is a departure from Shovel Knight. For those always saying "but I want Super Shovel Knight or Shovel Knight 64", putting out more of the same thing might do more harm to them than good even if it turns out to be a good product (ex. The Banner Saga 2).

It will give the DLC campaigns more visibility rather than get hidden in a patch inside the game. The old way of rolling in those changes just didn't make a lot of sense. Im not surprised they're changing it.

I'm fine with paid expansions, like Binding of Isaac or something - I just don't like the "We're making the game smaller! Buy it before we raise the price!" type shit.

They aren't making it small though? Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is exactly what owners today have. Free DLC into the future and all the campaigns combined. The only difference is a price increase (not great), but they are giving you a chance to buy it now at discount. Seems like a fair deal, unlike what H1Z1 has done.

Odallus is more like a classic Castlevania than a metroidvania, so I'm not sure it's a great point of comparison. I think Ori has better platforming (and plot/art etc., but I think we're specifically talking about gameplay), but I actually think Ori has much weaker combat. To be fair, they seem to have recognized that and focused more on the platforming than is standard for the genre, but Ori's combat really dragged the game down, I thought.

I don't think Shantae is as good as actual Metroid games or Igavanias, but I'd rate Pirate's Curse as a better effort than the vast majority of the genre. I didn't really care for Risky's Revenge, from the bit I played of it.

I'd prefer this approach to them farming in the kickstarter expansions and DLC because it won't benefit the game's sales or exposure.

I'm not seeing how anyone really loses here. Buy the game now, buy the game when it's on sale in a year. It's like a preorder bonus (a really generous one) except it doesn't require buying into a game that isn't out.

Why are you complaining though? Did you want to buy the game for 1$ in a humble bundle or something? What they're doing is totally justified and the backers still get all of the content they were promised.

Better buy Shovel Knight soon. Price is going to go up and there will be an option to buy standalone campaigns.

I'm slightly disappointed by the Gender Swap Mode. I knew that it was very very unlikely but I was hoping that they would surprise us by allowing us to play Shield Knight instead of a gender bend Shovel Knight. I absolutely don't blame them tho because I know that that's asking for a lot (as in: another Plague of Shadows type campaign). Just wishful thinking on my part.

None of these new campaigns were advertised as part of the main game originally, as far as I know. The plague knight chapter was a cool bit of extra value for early purchasers, but I think it's unreasonable to expect them to continue to create more without additional payment. I guess they could just start charging for them individually from everyone.

I can vouch for this game, it's a lot of fun!

Unfortunately I missed out on the giveaways back when it released on mobile, so I bought it full price on iOS, and now I missed out on the Steam giveaways lmao. Just my kind of luck. Anyway, this game is fully recommended.

I was mainly thinking about Odallus in terms of level design. It was very good with it's unlockable shortcuts. But yeah, it's not the best comparison.

I liked Oris combat actually. Though I guess that's mostly because of reflecting bullets and how it combines with your traversal options.
But yeah, it's strength is definitely platforming and traversal in genereal.

I don't dislike Pirate's Curse, but it's not clicking completely with me.

The press release makes it sound like the are planning new campaigns for all the other knights, so it might happen.

With the base campaign you get exactly what Shovel Knight was at release plus plenty of extra modes likely for a cheaper price.

And the release price was already more than justified for the content of the first campaign alone.

It's ridiculous to expect they add multiple new campaigns and battle mode and coop mode and more for free when they don't have a secondary way for monetarization (like microtransactions) in this game.
It's really nice of Yacht Club games to still stick to their original kickstarter promise of offering everything for free (for "early" buyers now) while a lot of players said they are willing to pay for these big content updates.

Hope they changed their mind and translate and port the extended PS4 version to steam instead of the Vita one.

I regret nothing:

Apparently NISA is actively encouraging people to mod this game in the forums. They pinned a modding thread and said they'd let people do it in their FAQ. I'm honestly surprised. I've never been fond of NISA due to their handling of this and a bunch of other titles, but that's really cool of them. I might get it myself should modding efforts prove successful.

Between this, the upcoming Tokyo Xanadu, Atelier, Nights of Azure, 999 HD/VLR, Ultra Despair Girls, Nier Automata, Tales of Berseria, and so on, this is really looking like a great year for Steam if you're big on Japanese games. If only Atlus and Vanillaware would follow suit....

I know I sound like a broken record but everyone who is playing Pony Island now please try to get all the tickets (using a guide if needed). You will be rewarded with the most "gamey" moment of the game ;D

I just beat the Blackweel Legacy. It was ok, the best part was the comments from Mr. Gilbert. Let's see how fares the next one (Unbound?)

Be ready. In my opinion, Unbound is the worst one. After that, they get better and better. So just soldier through that second one.

Wow, I thought the worst was the first one because it was archaic (and you can see it in some instances). I have the intent on playing the whole saga so yeah I'll soldier through Unbound then! :)

Phil Spencer talking about the need to take risks after Scalebound's cancellation.

How about risks along the lines of rereleasing the Zoo Tycoon games and The Movies on Steam?

:(

The first one is the worst from a technical standpoint perhaps (worst graphics and interface, worst sound quality, etc.) The second has the worst story - less likeable protagonist, etc. - and puzzles.

finished a story about my uncle. its alrigh, feels great until you lose momentum then it sucks, kinda like Mirror's Edge. There are some super frustrating jumps later in the game, but still, its not very long, and its very pretty.
