Super Mario Odyssey Announced (Holiday 2017)

And it's not due out until the end of this year basically?

Nintendo will clean this up nice. I think it looked fine but it *could* use some touch ups in certain areas. There's no way the graphics are locked down at this point. Not much to worry about IMO.

yep. EAD tends to polish at the last minute.

see 3D world.

Its like this is everyone's first rodeo

Cool let's attack another amazing looking Mario game. It's always the same thing. It looks so good and people care about some face in one area?

I'm sure when the second trailer comes people will be like "omgg so good" just like 3D World.

Seriously. When has a 3D Mario not been amazing? People asked for a return to the Mario 64 type exploration game, that's what we are getting, and it isn't enough. People ask Nintendo to change, we get some weird NYC type level in a Mario game and people complain about the look of it. Some people are hard to please. I, for one, cannot wait to get my hands on this game.

Impressions will probably get more positive when we see the game in more detail and more Mario-esque worlds like the desert and food ones are shown. I really think the highlight of this trailer was the frozen desert full of upside-down pyramids and all the weird looking enemies they showed towards the end.

Lots of unflattering Sonic comparisons came up with Mario 3D World as well, and the result was 3D World being great and Lost World being mediocre. Because that's how it always goes with 3D Mario and Sonic.

Kingdom Hearts does this, and offers varied and different worlds, yet it doesn't feel jarring or aesthetically tone-deaf.

Contrast and juxtaposition doesn't have to mean stylistically incoherent. The forest, city and humans just look really bad. :/

I would argue that the Tron and Pirates worlds in those games are far worse than this.

The least of Sonic 06's problems were its use of realistic looking human characters. Like holy shit guys.

It's one world of what should be many. Its not the Mushroom Kingdom. Its a world hopping adventure. Kingdom Hearts did this for example.

Of all of the many complaints about the Switch, this is the weirdest one.

I don't think Mario or any game is above reproach. That art style is definitely up for debate. It's the gameplay that Mario has consistently nailed.

aaaand nailed it.

But we have Mario walking in a blocky vegetable garden with talking cartoony cooking utensils. That's not very realistic at all and it's a lot more closer to the aesthestic we're used to seeing of Mario.

I'm sticking by my comment that the devs really want to experiment this game with a variety of artstyles in a 3D environment.

That's what we all want to see since that matches the cartoony style that Nintendo perpetuated since forever.

Was there a Mario game that featured humans? Usually the toadstool people represented the common background character.

Perhaps there's a 4th wall that Nintendo wants to break down with the use of its new controllers' cameras + IR sensors, but that's reading too much into just a trailer.

If there isn't a boss in Mario Switch that's literally Donkey Kong throwing barrels at you as you ascend girders on a skyscraper I'm gonna be pissed.

see Pirates of the Caribbean world in KH2...and the Tron world.

like don't get me wrong, it looks weird and the models could use some work...but I think that is the intention. This is NOT the Mushroom Kingdom nor the normal Mario fare...

People are down on this, but I absolutely love it. For the first time in a long time, I'm excited to explore a world in a Mario game.

The art style is definitely weird (especially in the city), but I can't think of any other way to emulate that strange feeling you got exploring the early 3D environments back on the N64. Those environments were weird, and sometimes even scared me as a kid. This looks perfectly weird and can't wait.

My only hope now is that they can take the music to equally weird places to go with it, instead of the same old jolly remixes we've been having. Consider me hyped.

Are people triggered by that one Bugs Bunny cartoon where he and Elmer Fudd were working in what was supposed to be a real nightclub populated by actual movie stars in the 30s and 40s?

Kind of off topic, but somehow I haven't seen this episode! I'm off to find it now :)

No. Most of us are worried because Sonic 06' tried visuals like that and we all know how amazing that turned out to be.

Aside from the realistic city, everything else shown looks amazing.

Plenty of Mario 64 levels had a bleak, creepy aesthetic, and it's hard to know how much of that was deliberate and how much was down to technical limitations. Inadvertent throwback?

From IGN:

After having made the Galaxy games and 3D World, which were designed to appeal to a broader audience, Super Mario Odyssey will be "something a little bit more on the core side," Miyamoto said.

Nintendo is looking to "go back to the roots, to Mario Sunshine," Miyamoto said with regard to the upcoming Switch game. He noted that some players had trouble with the camera of aforementioned GameCube title, so with Odyssey they have "made sure the camera controls are really smooth and easy to use."

Miyamoto also reiterated that players will be able to explore a wide variety of locales in Super Mario Odyssey, which was made evident by the announcement trailer that was shown during last night's Nintendo Switch presentation.

I really can't dig the city area
but the rest is sooooo good, even if I'm not a superfan of the free roaming approach

My issue is some of the levels just don't jive with marios art style. They look like some of those cheap HomeBrew unreal Mario demos

why?

The realism wasn't the issue with that game at all. Sure it looked bad but people are acting like that was THE reason for that game's failure. Hell there it was for the whole game here its ONE world probably.

It is a weird concern to have really....especially considering the gulf in EAD and Sonic Team histories.

And I continue to maintain that's a dumbass comparison on the basis of actual aesthetics (no one has even bothered to do even a half-ass job at screenshot comparison), tone, narrative and surrounding gameplay context, developer pedigree- basically everything that matters when it comes to game development. It would be as much of a dumbass comparison as if Sonic showed up as a cameo, and people were grossed out because Sonic himself is in 06 or, hell, if people used this same reference point to dog Sonic Mania. It's nothing but a childish emotional reaction based in nothing but a decade-old game that isn't even relevant to the franchise it belongs to anymore. Hell, it wasn't even relevant when Unleashed came out. Dumb, dumb, dumb comparisons all around.

hot take - looked like sonic '06 and some open world ass bullshit

i was visibly confused the entire trailer

Visibly confused would describe my reaction too. This seems like such a right turn on Mario's direction. I know it's probably one level/ world but like you and others said the first thing that pops into mind is Sonic '06, too cruel for Mario since I know the game will be awesome, but the realistic stage feels out of place.

If Donkey Kong is the boss in the realistic world I'll be cool with it.

I know people make the visual comparison, but people are actually worried? The aesthetic similarities are separate from how the the game will actually play. And I'd assume we'd all know that this isn't going to somehow play as bad as Sonic 06 just because there's a level that takes place in a realistic looking city.

I don't think anyone is suggesting this is gonna play or function as poorly as Sonic 06. But videogames are a visual medium, and visually, those city levels look just as off-putting.

I seriously don't get the reaction to the city. It's crazy level where mario looks out of the place, it's charming and funny. I don't why people think it's the main part of the game.

I kinda expect the game to be something of an anthology; these rather big, yet condensed levels and stories across various alternate universes. The story being that Bowser has kidnapped Peach and, seeing as his plans always get foiled by Mario (even when he ventures into space!), he attempts to hide away in other dimensions/universes and seeks to become king of those places instead. Of course Mario finds a way to chase after them. So when you see Bowser in that kind of "pimp"-outfit it's not how he looks the entire game, it's just how he has accommodated himself in that New Donk City-setting.

Maybe obvious and safe speculation, but that's what I think anyway.

That city level doesn't look like either Soleanna (by way of architecture, the contextualized use of series staples within the environment, and general IQ) or Crisis City (obviously). So even if this comparison is only on the basis of visuals, either all of you are blind or your forgot what Sonic 06 really looked like.

Seriously, this is nothing more than a visceral reaction to "platformer character in a city," in part because dogging on Sonic 06 is still cool even a decade later. Nothing more or less, which is fine(?)- emotions are emotions- but I'm not at liberty to take stock in ill-defined or inaccurate artistic comparisons. Y'all can do better than that.

Plus this game doesn't release until Holiday. This is Nintendo....it will get polished. The city level looks great.

Pancake Mix

Copied someone else's pancake recipe
Mario embarks on a new journey through unknown worlds, running and jumping through huge 3D worlds in the first sandbox-style Mario game since Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. Set sail between expansive worlds aboard an airship, and perform all-new actions, such as throwing Mario's cap.

I'm glad Nintendo clarified that it's indeed an open world 3D platformer so we can stop having 3D Land/World or Galaxy speculation. This is my ideal 3D Mario design.

I only play on a single platform, yet I always recognize when another system has a game that looks really good.

This is it. I would love to play this game, so for those who are picking up a switch, enjoy it!

I preordered a Switch today, though I'm feeling torn about keeping it. I'll get Zelda because it's fucking Zelda, but damn is the lineup looking thin for a while. This should have been a launch title. It looks like a blast to play.

Think I did a bit of a 180. I'm really coming to terms and digging this. I wasn't too into the city and forest but I think they look fine. Gameplay will be amazing so I'm hyped about that and the day of the dead level. Game is going to be amazing.

Just noticed it's called New Donk CIty, oh please tell me Donkey Kong is involved and it's like a King Kong style city battle. It's the only thing that fits with the realistic aesthetic, plus it'll be cool to have Donkey Kong in a main Mario game as a Boss.

Edit: Clearly late to the thread on that point, eveyone already spotted it + the other DK references.
Okay I'm cool with this now, the 1950s style clearly they've gone for a King Kong style.
