"As long as you're good enough, you can be as much of a hateful piece of shit you can be!"
The dude said all that stuff years upon years ago, and since then he has not only apologized numerous times, he has also volunteered working with the very groups of people he was hating in his rants. Why is it so hard for people to forgive someone for their past faults, ESPECIALLY when they have clearly repented from them.

So far as Hell or High Water getting a nom goes, I think that's simply due to the kind of film it is, and the efficiency by which everything about it is executed. Nothing's really wasted in that film at all, and the performances are uniformly great. It's a film that doesn't excel to heights that you'd consider transformative, but there's also no weak links in it anywhere. Not in the score, or the cinematography, or the editing, or the dialog...

It's a modern western that isn't being ostentatious about the fact it's a modern western, or that it's a prestige picture. It's just a solid story told very, very well, by very, very talented people.

Getting a Oscar nomination (or a Oscar itself) is not a free pass for your personal behavior.

It just means that your movie is well considered among the academy. Nothing more, nothing less.

From upthread, it seems like he's partially there because he was a bigot.

(should probably put "was" in quotes, I guess)

Narratives are just as important behind the scenes as they are in front of the camera. A feel-good story will get you votes just as much as your craft will. And if the people at your studio know how to craft that story and get it in front of the right voters, the faults of your film can and will be papered over for the sake of the message the voter will be able to send with their vote

A good number of Oscar voters like to vote not so much on the merit but on their perceived role in helping make a real-life story come true. At which point it becomes a matter of "which vote will make you feel like you made more of a difference in Hollywood."

A film's quality is often not the primary concern when it comes to the bigger categories.

It's partially why I always think it's funny when people talk about Hollywood and Politics not mixing. Hollywood's version of politics is politics.

Which is probably why my question earlier about "why is all this boo hoo the poor white man never gets a break shit in here" was kind of a dumb one. Because these are the sorts of concerns that just won the Presidency. Why wouldn't it also apply to the Oscars?

Hacksaw Ridge has merits enough as a movie for Oscar nominations without conspiracy theories.

Do they really need to nominate Meryl Streep every year? There are so many other actresses that deserve a nomination. Amy Adams was totally robbed.

The one nomination nobody should be crying foul about is Screenplay. Taylor Sheridan is one hell of a talent and he's putting together a pretty nice resume. He also wrote the script for Sicario.

Up next is Wind River, which he's also directing. It just made a splash at Sundance to rave reviews and he wrote the script for the upcoming Sicario sequel as well.

No Deadpool is a relief. Guess it was never really a possibility.

I wanted to see Kimi No Na Wa there though. Whatevs. May La La Land win as many as possible. Wait Can't Stop the Feeling got a nomination for song? jesus.

What conspiracy theories? That's not a "conspiracy" I posted above. That's how the Oscars work. That's how basic politics work. The Oscars are a political thing just as much as they are an art thing. The balance between the two has always been sorta tenuous, but the Weinstein Effect basically tilted that balance more to the politics side than the art decades ago.

This isn't some outlandish, fevered scenario with no real basis in fact or reality, cooked up because I can't stand to see a racist & a misogynist get an undeserved nomination. It's literally how this Hollywood Prom works.

The quality of his film is probably not as high up on people's lists as the story where he's rewarded for taking his shunning like a man. That's not outlandish. That you saw such a narrative pop up almost immediately in here from people not even in the industry should be a decent signifier that said narrative is a strong one.

The Oscars aren't really a meritocracy. That's part of the appeal, honestly. That's part of the frustrating, annoying allure of them. It's why people get up early for the nomination announcements: They wanna talk about the snubs just as much as the noms.

I don't recall anything 'ground breaking' in the film that would warrant a nomination.
How was the costum design in Fantastic Feasts, Allied or La la Land better than RO? Every scene in RO is filled to the brink with original and completely looking costumes, most that you only see for a split second.

But I guess the academy really likes their period pieces above all else.

I would list all three of the films you mentioned above Rogue One for costume. I recall a lot of browns and beiges in the film. Nothing really popped to me at all.

Thrilled for La La Land which I absolutely adored. Very surprised that Rogue One didn't have more support in the effects/guild categories.

I guess I just dont get La La Land, seems completely mediocre compared to most major musicals.

Hoping to see Manchester by Sea tonight.

La La Land was one of my big disappointments. I don't think it was bad but it just didn't click with me the way I was hoping it would. Too many things are "off" for it to keep me afloat, despite the beautiful cinematography, editing, and of course, the finale.

Rooting for Moonlight and Arrival. Moonlight is just a staggering accomplishment and I would love for a great sci-fi movie to get some awards love.

Garfield was pretty baller in 2016. Getting kicked out from Spiderman was probably the best thing ever for his career.

Really puzzled by the Amy Adams snub. She carried that film. I feel like Streep got the nom because of her Golden Globes speech and the chance to stir up some headlines. Happy for Ruth Negga though.

when your name is enough to get fucking hugo nominated for best picture but you can't get any awards recognition when you drop a genuine masterpiece??

Could her two films split the votes? Might have more of a chance if the put her in for best supporting for Nocturnal Animals and just ran with Arrival as best lead actress.

Films about religion like Silence are utterly out of step with what the Academy is attuned to. It's something that I've noticed a lot over the years, as they seem to have a lot more issues with dealing with that topic than anything else that comes their way.

Good animation nominees, particularly with My Life as a Zucchini. Way more people need to aee tht film, it surprised me in a very goos way. To be honest I've never had a problem recently with how they nominate animated movies (it's actually how the Oscars should be done). My problem is the actual award for the damn thing.

Zootopia is totay going to win, with Moana as the dark horse, because there's no point in giving out the damn thing if Disney/Pixar doesn't win, I guess.

Zootopia better win Best Animated Feature.
Don't worry, it will.

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
They couldn't have given the 10th Best Picture slot to Loving?

The show will be a La La Land circle jerk. Yawn, typical Hollywood.

Extraordinarily and pleasantly surprised that Suicide Squad got a nomination!! I thought it would only happen in my wildest fantasies hehehehe

Hope La La Land sweeps. I think it's significantly better than Moonlight (which is also great, but no La La Land). Best Picture, Director, Original Song, the works. Go La La Land!

I still haven't seen Moonlight, but I share the opinion about La La Land. It is a good film, but it doesn't soar as high as the films it was inspired by at any moment. I enjoyed watching it and will probably see it again, but the praise around it seems a little bit too much. Have my fingers crossed for Arrival. It is a shame Amy Adams didn't get a nomination.

So many "Blank was robbed" complaints without saying which nominee should be booted. There are often more than five deserving films in a category.

I agree with this. I did a Demy marathon after watching La la land and came to this conclusion. I think he did one hell of a job directing though.
