NeoGAF Post by Ori Dev: Scorpio is a "full blown next generation Console

I haven't followed it, so we're basically getting 8x increase in CPU, 8x increase in GPU, 8x increase in memory like it was on average before in console transitions?

That's the definition of more than small upgrade? If so, then no. What's the difference between a HD7770 and something better than an RX480?

A "full-blown next generation" console that is anchored to its predecessor and thus cannot have any exclusives that really take advantage f it.

At least that the's truth of it based on the information we currently have.

God damn it. I feel like this generation just got started and Microsoft and Nintendo are already chugging fadt into "next gen".

Lol Sony is killing it with the PS4 and I don't see them dropping the PS4 anytime soon.

Nintendo moves after handheld system gens now though, but yeah. All 3 seem to be on the same trajectory, being iterations of similar hardware to allow you to bring the games with you, which is great. At least I presume the Switch will be a similar thing where the next gen Switch will use whatever Nvidia's got cooking SoC wise in the future

Microsoft just needs to have a event on the Scorpio already so we can just get a clear picture of what the Scorpio is.

To much different information coming out and we're sitting here having to deal with this until maybe E3 :l

That's not the definition of a new generation. The PS2 played PS1 games.

New gen means that Scorpio will get games that cannot be played on Xbox One. If games can still be played on Xbox One, the Scorpio is just an upgrade.

I don't really think that's the case anymore. It's now just adding a target spec.

Essentially we will just have cross-gen games for a much longer period of time.

I think eventually the Xbone will lose support from devs, but MS will mandate they port anything on Scorpio to Xbone for something like 2 years. Because PS4 Pro is much closer to PS4 than Scorpio is to Xbox One, PS4 will get all PS4 Pro games until PS5. It's a bit different with scorpio. Essentially, eventually the Xbox one will fail to meet the minimum spec you see now with PC games, and devs won't want to be hamstrung by it. Likely won't happen for at least a couple years after scorpio is out. I think you will see scorpio exclusive titles by 2019. And who knows if we will even get another xbox 5-6 years from now. Depends on how successful scorpio is and if MS wants to keep putting out a box.

Why would he want MS to back pedal on what they promised? Scorpio is not a new gen, both XBO and Scorpion will play the exact same games, with one running them at higher res/settings/etc. It's exactly like the Pro in concept but more powerful.

Not the same thing.

You can't play Wii U games on a Wii.

You can (supposedly) play all Xbox One games on Xbox One, the S, and Scorpio.

Which, IMO, doesn't sound like next gen. If it is, then Microsoft would have to do something unprecedented.

Thomas made it clear that Microsoft will need to do some work on promoting the new console to make sure the consumer doesn’t compare it to the PS4 Pro, and that it might just be considered an upgrade rather than this big new console.

.. but it is an upgrade. :s

It's getting tiring hearing this 'Scorpio is a new gen' nonsense, it isn't.

This. Whatever, I'm ready to see the games. People will bash it no matter what it has under the hood. Someone out there to dislike everything. I'm looking forward to it.

BTW: can people not separate new generation from exclusive games?

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

All consoles now are x86 PCs and the architecture will remain the same, that's why Sony was able to quickly iterate on the PS4 and make a beefier version of it.

Scorpio is a next-gen machine with the added benefit that all your old games will still be compatible. From this point on, similar to PCs, you'll not lose your library when you buy a next-gen system. I guess since NeoGAF is confsued, Microsoft will need to do a little work to make it clear to everyone that Scorpio isn't just a half-assed upgrade (which the PS4 Pro kinda is...), but a full blown next-gen machine that's just backwards-compatible to your current library.

More power is completely irrelevant if its not gonna be used lol.

Has there even been a game that fully utilized and is built from the ground up for the Pro ?

Not even close.

Idk, I mean I still hear people calling this gen "next gen" so that may not be saying much.

But damn this roller coaster up and down, is it or is it not more powerful than we think?

Either way Microsoft has my attention.

Do they show this thing at E3 or before?

What if Scorpio 2 games can be played on Scorpio but not on XB1?

There is no "new gen" according to you. From now on new games can be played on the last two consoles.

This read more like a demage control and increase hype based on power is not good right now after the Eurogamer leak... But is going to be fun to watch..

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
Why would he want MS to back paddle on what they promised?

Wouldnt be the first time an employee said something which caused Microsoft to backpedal.

If this an actual huge leap they should have games shared for both Xbox One and Scorpio for two years before making exclusive Scorpio games that take advantage of the power.

The thing is there is not enough advantage to make a "4k" game on Scorpio that couldn't run at 900p/1080p on regular XBO.

PS4 pro is supposed to be a stop gap console. It's supposed to be half assed. Sony isn't as dumb as Microsoft and made it clear from day 1 that there will be no exclusives on the pro. They understand how important generations are to the industry.

This 6tflop console is only 3x more powerful than the ps4 and 4x more powerful than the x1. I have no fucking idea how that is a generational leap.

Does he actually know, or is this just gaf back and forth? Does he have a dev kit? Why are we making articles based on news items based on gaf posts? Seems reactionary.

In terms of perception, the hardware is kind of irrelevant if it shares the exact same software library as the lower-end SKU.

You can't have your cake and eat it too. If its a "new generation" it needs an exclusive library to justify its billing, if it doesn't its just an upgraded version of the current platform because its offering only the same experiences at a higher level of fidelity.

Most likely Scorpio is the bridge between Xbox One and future Xbox consoles using UWP exclusively. Meaning future Xbox consoles will be forward and backward compatible like PC games. So whatever Xbox 4 is, it'll play Gears of War 4 and it'll scale to whatever hardware that console has because it's essentially running the Windows 10 version.

So yeah if that's true then it's sort of a next gen console? Maybe not in the traditional leap that we're used to but in the idea of offering a new "gaming platform".

If there are no games exclusive to the console then it doesn't mean shit, it means the lowest common denominator will always be the XB1 so it doesn't matter even if it's 10TF, it's NOT a new generation.

I believe his post happened before the Scorpio white paper leak. So Idk if it's literally damage control....

It's a literal definition of gaf -> Internet-> gaf

So Mahler is basically saying that there will be exclusive games for it, which is in direct contrast to MS's messaging.

I love when gaming sites report on posts like this.

I linked it above.

I had found it and posted it at the same time as you, haha.

But the leaked document that DF discussed mentioned that the base game has to run on the XO. If that was the case, then it's not a next gen system. Also the lack of a CPU upgrade will significantly limit what it can do with games. At this point we won't be seeing any advanced CPU workloads if it's truly next gen.
