It's been 3 years since Tropical Freeze launched...

Tropical Freeze is one of the greatest platforms of all times. I gladly take another one with that superb level design, David Wise at the music and this time, with proper lighting

Hoping they finish their DK Trilogy with a 3D Donkey Kong game.

As much as I also would enjoy a new Metroid, Donkey Kong isn't going anywhere. Especially when you consider the minecart ride being a part of Nintendo World.

I'm about to play it for the first time! I'm going through DKCR first, but I'm finding I'm remembering more than I thought I would, I should be through it pretty quick.

I thought it was cool when Retro tackled the Donkey Kong and Metroid franchises, like they were owning up to their company name by resuscitating two iconic brands back to their rightful places in the Nintendo hierarchy.

My top 5 Nintendo IPs I want Retro to work on next:

5.) Famicom Detective Club - The popularity of adventure/mystery games is at an all-time high with the Telltale games like Walking Dead, then there are others like Phoenix Wright, Steins;Gate, the Nonary games, etc.

4.) Doshin The Giant - Make this gem an open world platformer using the same engine as Mario Odyssey with a lot of destructible pieces and big bosses.

3.) Wave Race/F-Zero - I think it's time for another staple racing game that isn't Mario Kart

2.) Tamagon - A revival in a roguelike format using the same engine as the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games or perhaps Blinding Isaac.

1.) Ice Climbers - A co-op platformer that relies on cooperation to navigate through treacherous icy dungeons filled with falling stalactites and snowy mountains.

I'm guessing it will be anounced at E3 and be an early-mid 2018 release. Given Nintendo's statements over the past few years they seem acutely aware of people wanting another Metroid Prime. Tanabe, Miyamoto, Reggie, etc. have been stating they are working on other Metroid projects and have many ideas for the series. While it's a little unclear if they were just referring to Federation Force, Nintendo has given some reason to believe it isn't just that.

Three years since this fucking game? Man, time sure flies.

David fucking Wise was amazing in it.

And I still haven't beat it. A girl I was with at the time used to like playing it but she sucked. so. bad. Like, it was painful, I would have to step in and take the controller to clear a part she kept dying at because ti would start to frustrate me.

I'm aware of this post. My comment is based on a communication I had with a Nintendo employee that lead me to believe that there MAY have been something to the rumor.

This sounds like a 'my uncle works at Nintendo'-story.

On-topic: After seeing what they did with Metroid and Donkey Kong, I'm really curious to see what they could do with a different Nintendo IP. No idea what the obvious choice would be though. Ice Climbers? Balloon Fight? While all the franchises that haven't been touched in a while (that I can think of right now) are great, most of them don't exactly have the existing level of popularity that DK and Metroid have.

They helped out on some Mario Kart tracks right? Maybe F-Zero? There hasn't been one in ages, and they went through the trouble of giving it a place in the Mario Kart DLC. Could have been a warm up for a full F-Zero game. Even DKC:R (haven't played TF) played with levels designed around superfast, pixel perfect platforming (in the mine cart stages and the time trials), which is the kind of thing F-Zero is all about too. Put Captain Falcon front and center in the marketing for recognizability and it might just work.

Not at all, it was on a message board. Also, Mario Kart 7 was a full collaboration with Retro Studios and EAD.

As I said, Retro are definitely working on something Donkey Kong related. It may be a while off yet though.

You actually know something? I'd love a new DKC most of anything they could possibly be working on. A new 3D DK would be super exciting though, and same for Diddy Kong Racing.

I'd love to see what a graphically modern DK would look like, considering the Wii U game looked like an improved Wii game which looked like an improved GameCube game. Hopefully they do that or, a Metroid not called Prime.

That's still just as vague really. I didn't mean a literal uncle, your comment just fit the stereotype. I'd honestly be very surprised if a real Nintendo employee with that kind of insight would just blab about it on a public forum.

And I'm sorry, but I did just read the thread your tag links to and that makes me a bit less likely to believe your claim.

You're right about Mario Kart though, mixed the two titles up.

It was a PM. I think they were amused at my knowledge/research.

Also, Kozlowski is a liar, and was just trying to cover his tracks because he felt he might have said a little too much about what he was up to at the time. But, of course, it was easy for everyone to gang up on me because he's a former Retro Studios employee.

One of those games I never got around to getting for the U. I'm really hoping for an enhanced Switch version.

Yeah, I can't say more than that I am afraid.

Still just sold me on a Switch. Pulling the trigger as soon as anything gets announced!

..Even a little scared to cancel my preorder now. Just in case the Switch isn't readily available by the time it's out.

Edit:

Funny you should say that

The post you quoted contained the words "David Wise".

That's it, keeping my preorder.

I'd buy a Switch for another DK game. I'm never getting rid of my WiiU because I have DKCTF installed on there. It's an all time classic. It will still be an amazing game in 20 years.

The bolded doesn't exactly do the job of making you sound more convincing. Cements the 'uncle at Nintendo'-stereotype if anything. Anyone can play internet detective, doesn't make you knowledgeable, no matter how much you'd like to be an insider. Also: Anyone can claim to work at Nintendo on a forum. Doesn't mean anything, if that PM exists at all. Still not buying an employee sharing company gossip to a stranger like that.

Also, people called you out because you were weirdly interested/invested/judgmental about his personal career choices, and someone who personally knew the guy even showed up to point out how bizarre your angry reaction was. Nobody cared about that little line on his blog, that's not what people were commenting to you about.

But I won't go on, didn't mean to call anyone out or derail this thread, just wanted to read speculation about Retro's next game. Move along everybody.

I have no desire to be an insider haha. I'm just a huge fan of Retro's and videogames in general, nothing more. But we'll find out what's going on with them sooner or later, for sure.

The end of the DK trilogy. I'm looking forward to that.

they should at the very least split into two teams and eventually make a DKCR3. They have yet to see the sales numbers of returns with any of their other games. They should try again with a more popular console.

Give me Fucking Donkey Kong country baby! Take some cues from Rayman and Yoshi's Woolly World tho as far as optimization and modernizing the game. Do away with lives, add more flavor to the world and game, etc. DKC TF felt painfully like an uprezzed Wii game, as great as it is

A third DK would be awesome, Tropical Freeze is one of my favourite platform ever.

Anyway I would like also a Metroid Prime 4 or a new IP.

Retro's DK games are top notch, but I'd rather have them surprising us with a new IP or giving us another Metroid Prime title, to be honest.

Retro has been averaging just over 1 game per console cycle.

Metroid Prime 3 and Donkey Kong Country for Wii
DK Tropical freeze for Wii U
and ??? for Switch

I'm hoping its DKC:3!

The way I see it, the worst case is a follow-up to DK64, a great case would be a third DKC (though honestly, I think they said what they had to say about 2D platforming in DKCTF and don't know how they can take it up rather than sideways), a dream case would be Jungle Beat 2, and the best case is Ice Climber.
