Ready at Dawn unveils Deformers (PC/PS4/XB1, online/local MP, GameStop) [Previews]

Well actually to be fair, I said that when I thought it was the only project they were working on. I figured they were doing something cheaper to produce and maybe less risky to possibly recoup losses from The Order. That was my initial thought.

But they are actually working on something else so we'll see if it's as ambitious as The Order was. That's what I want from them.

But I never said the game looked bad in any way, because it doesn't.

I want that too, I just think that the comments in this thread have been incredibly mean spirited and lazy for absolutely no good reason. I mean people have found a dozen angles to shit on this 30 second teaser and I don't know which are more depressing.

Even if this was their only project, why do you find yourself doubting the developer's excitement on the game, even after they personally came into the thread and write about how and why they're passionate about it? I dunno, I just find it to be such an overly cynical perspective on the matter.

What the hell did I just watch? This is a beat em up brawler? Looks like a mini game. Would much rather have The Order 1886 sequel...

Cool to learn that it's a passion project. I'm certainly curious now. It's not often that a developer returns from the land of dark and moody AAA games with something bright and colorful like this! Will definitely grab a copy at launch.

No campaign (other than probably some training levels). There will be optional AIs, however.

It is designed from the ground up as a multiplayer game and we rather put all our eggs in that basket. :)

Thank you for the response, looks fun!

Considering the fact that i thought 1886's world had a lot of potential for story telling, its sad that it'll never be explored

Really not into multiplayer-only games, and when it comes to studios that constantly produce single player games much of the time, I hope for more SP stuff. However, happy that they're getting to make a passion project and branching out. Good for them and good luck to the team!

Game companies can make different size projects and use different parts of their companies to develop multiple prototypes/projects.

i doubt this is the studio's only project. most of the team has got to be working on something bigger. There is no way an 80 person studio is making this game and nothing else.

gaf's still got a long way to go eh

this game looks wicked and I want it. not even close to sad that it's not a sequel to that mediocre shooter of theirs. although i can only imagine what these guys will do with that franchise after taking criticism into acct. they're capable of some great things if their PSP output and the Order's insane visuals were anything to go by

you know, I get not being excited for this particular game, but it's crazy to act like this signals the death of RAD or that this is some fall from glory. that's some middle school lunch room bullshit

What, exactly, was ambitious in The Order outside of its graphics? It seemed like a light retread of gameplay tropes well-established during the past decade.

This looks more novel.

Sad to see people shitting on a dev cause they are making something smaller yet looks more fun than their borinv graphic narrative powerhouse.

I guess some people really are all about graphics and story over gameplay.

Also, RaD really need a licencing deal with somebody to make plushies/squeezies of their critters.

It's all about that secondary merchandising.

Game looks fantastic! :D I'm really excited to check this out at my monthly gaming nights where I get together with 3 other friends and hit up some couch co op games.

It's placeholder but EB games AU is listing it so far as a full priced game.

Personally I feel like the mod did a bad job of editing the OP, ppl still coming in here thinking this is some sort of last ditch effort from RAD

I can't see this as anything but a fall from grace. I seriously doubt this would be their next game if The Order had not flopped. Not my kinda game so I'm interested to see what their next big project is about.

It really depends on if it's a good game or not. If they follow The Order with something a greater amount of people enjoy I can't see that as anything other than a success.

As someone who still feels a bit disappointed, dissatisfied and kinda frustrated about how The Order turned out... (Looks amazing, average gameplay, weird pace and storyline-wise is awful) I find this new game like super mega cool. It actually seems really but really fun.

Anyways, I wish the best to RAD, I love to death their PSP games, especially Ghost of Sparta which IMHO is a fucking masterpiece.

Eagerly awaiting to know more about their new projects.

hahahahaha from the order to this? Okey. The deception!
Oh lord.

Blah blah looks more fun than the Order!! Har har! Cause I need everything to be colorful and fun at all times or I get grumpy!

Game looks awesome though, can't wait to try it out. But my god not every game has to be some "fun toy".

lol ok

Like, The Order 1886 was not trying to be a fun game? Was it an arthouse game? Please.
Both the Eurogamer and Polygon previews go into detail there - but the short story is that it is a very old concept (like, 25+ years old) which we started exploring again as a side project (I started working on networking the physics engine in the summer of 2014 at night, as a "spare time" R&D effort), after TO shipped we had the first playable prototype and then grew slowly from there.

About 20 people on the team now.

Cool to hear!

Hey! :) My name is Andrea Pessino, I am the director on Deformers. I am NOT here to change the tone of the conversation or convert the skeptics, but I just wanted to contribute a couple extra bits of information. I hope it's OK.

We will support cross play everywhere they lets us. Up to 4 player split screen, 8 players total per match, with heterogeneous teams and the ability to mix couch and online players as desired. 60FPS on all platforms (except using splitscreen on some platforms). Dedicated servers all around. We are building some very unique features to encourage competitive play – a lot more will be announced later.

As for the game itself, it is really hard to communicate what the experience is like in a video (much less a screenshot). It plays and feels like its own thing. Now this is not by itself a guarantee of quality, of course, but honestly we spend insane amounts of time playing it and it’s so much fun we can’t stop even when we are just debugging it. ;) A lot of the novelty comes from the fact that the game is completely physics based – the way the characters interact with the platforms and with each other feels very tactile and immediate (a main reason why we wanted the combat to rely heavily on melee). Smashing, blasting, grabbing, stomping, parrying, etc. everything feels very connected.

We have been iterating on the core gameplay for well over a year, trying to refine the pillars of the combat: fast and frantic, easy to pickup but very layered, centered on skill, social and competitive. Everyone we have shown the game to so far has had a really fun time with it – so we are hopeful we are on the right track. :)

On a personal note: this game has been a wonderful, emotional experience for me. The original concept for it is something I have been dreaming of making for over 25 years, that’s a part of it for sure. But by FAR the biggest factor has been the spirit and determination of the team that has built itself around it – they have turned it into the most rewarding project I’ve ever worked on, personally and professionally. It’s like a crazy club of shit talking gamers spending insane amounts of time together, arguing and polishing and experimenting and playing, playing, playing... We have a so much fun coming up with the crazy and goofy stuff, looking for the most gameplay possible and just spending time together on a small project we really believe in.

Now, I really hope the game will resonate with players looking for something different , but however it comes out at the end don’t feel sorry for us since we are having a fucking blast working hard on it. :)
Amazing post. Good luck to you all!

I'm getting some real Ooga Booga (Dreamcast) vibes from Deformers. Kind of funny because Ooga Booga turned 15 years old this week. Any game that keeps that sort of company is good by me.

Some of the reactions in this thread... pretty sorry, if I do say so myself. It's to the detriment of all members of the gaming community to treat AAA as if it's the major leagues, with the concomitant understanding that any game falling outside of AAA's aesthetic and narrative conservatism is automatically a species of failure. Given The Orders's poor reception, this looks like the change of pace that RaD needs to demonstrate its creativity and versatility. If they can do that at a budget price point, so much the better.

Old post but eh, it was familiar but I really liked the world and set up for The Order. I think a sequel would have really fleshed the gameplay and the setting out.

On topic though, it's kind good this got bumped since I think I totally missed this announcement or forgot about it. Deformers looks pretty fun.

I think the game looks great! It might be a departure from the type of game that some people expected from Ready at Dawn, but in my book it's good to see them bringing something different to the table. I hope for the best for them with this project.

Hey! Thanks for the kind words!

We had a blast showing Deformers at PAX, and then we had a glorious 3 day tournament at the GameStop Expo last week - people seem to have a ton of fun with the game, that makes me very happy. ;)

The Kinda Funny guys had a quick look at Deformers with us on their live stream (showing an alpha build live, while talking and playing, is nerve wracking, let me tell you ;) ). If you'd like to see a bit more about what the game is all about you can view the stream here:

https://www.twitch.tv/gamestop/v/89676799?t=03h17m00s

Starts at 6:35 or so, we show two quick matches playing 4 player split screen against 4 other players in a different location.

EDIT: updated the link to one that, you know... actually exists. :) Sorry about that!

Not actually that important
Loos great! Tho I'll wait to see if a portable version gets announced in the weeks after release, before switch-ing to the PS4 version ;-)

Btw, finally someone who understands that PC gamers often use their TVs as monitors and that in light of this fact it's depressing to see how often the split-screen/couch-mp options get cut for the PC port of a "console" game.

I see what you did there and I like it.

GameStop changed the release date from 2/14 to 3/31. @DeformersGame tweeted yesterday that it's still on for 2/14, so I'm not really sure what's going on. This would be a fun Valentine's Day gift for my wife and I to play together, so I'm hoping it's still just a couple weeks out.

Seems like something that could do well on the Switch if they could get it on that platform. Looks fun though. I would buy it on PC.
